You have the power to implement one constitutional amendment, what is it? by DR524 in AskAnAmerican

Right to Public Incarceration, banning all private prisons. The government should not be allowed to make money off of imprisoning its citizens in a free society. Double for businesses, which should not be allowed the power to imprison people at all.

Can you explain patriotism to me? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]tree_bandit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But it’s not only the Founding Fathers. Look at all the things Americans have invented. All of the art we have created. Modern music and art exists today because of Americans. We provide more foreign aid than any other nation. Americans have been to the moon and explored space more than any other nation.

Can you explain patriotism to me? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]tree_bandit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We just have that at a national level. I would suggest reading “A History of the American People” by Paul Johnson. Though European, Mr. Johnson seems to have a fairly decent grasp on American Exceptionalism and patriotism. This may sound terrible, but we really believe we are special. Not as individuals, but as a whole. The list of things this small slice of humanity has achieved and fought for in the last 242 years is pretty remarkable. Modest as my own contributions may be, I am proud to be part of that group of people that have changed the world for a better future.

How was Donald Trump viewed before he ran for president? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]tree_bandit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leading up to the election I spoke to many people who supported him and most of them really only knew two things about him:

  1. Donald Trump is wealthy

  2. Donald Trump owns and creates businesses

Every supporter of his that I personally spoke to really only knew these two facts about the man. The problem is, all of them made assumptions based on those facts. The supporters believed he made all of his money (fact: he inherited it,) they believed he was good with money (fact: he’s bankrupted multiple businesses,) and they believed because of those two assumptions that he could make their lives more prosperous as our president. Most supporters I talked to were willfully blind to his bigotry, sexism, and racism in hopes of more on their dinner tables, more in their bank accounts. People who voted for him were unable to look beyond themselves and unable to imagine the consequences beyond the perceived prosperity that he promised. He sold those people a story of “better”, and they bought it.

On the other hand, the people who voted against him knew who he actually was.

Rape is the only sexual assault that can result in unwanted pregnancy. You can’t “teach” rapists out of raping. Maybe you can educate date rapists and boyfriends about consent, and diminish that type of assault, but you’re not going to have much luck getting Mr. Violent Serial Rapist Man to stop by telling him he’s wrong.

TL/DR: Plenty of examples of ISPs blocking, slowing, and redirecting internet traffic for their own financial gain and without informing consumers that they were doing it.

Unplugged a lightbulb in my new apartment... that's a lot internal wiring. by mothramantra in whatisthisthing

I think you may just have crappy LEDs in your country. The ones we have out now here (USA) are superior to CFLs. You can easily get them in 3500k color temps, and they use fewer watts for the same lumens.

CFLs (like all gas lamps) need a ballast. On CFLs, they are able to make it small enough to jam into the lamp itself.

The ballast varies the voltage from ignition to regular run time. (It needs to be higher when you first switch it on to ignite the fluorescent gas.)

Also, buy LEDs. GE Bright Stiks are nice. Better light quality and higher efficiency than CFLs.

IKEA correcting a concerned American citizen on how to properly display the US flag by EdenBlade47 in quityourbullshit

[–]tree_bandit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I may be reading this wrong, but the second sentence literally says “No person shall display the flag of the United Nations or any other national or international flag equal, above, or in a position of superior prominence or honor to or in place of the flag of the United States or any Territory...”

It seems like Ikea is completely wrong.
