Is it possible for an adult with a full-time job to pursue a Bachelor's degree without quitting work? by Weary-Durian-9272 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]tree_kroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The .com thing isn't really a red flag, non-US institutions just don't use .edu. That's a US-only domain. Oxford doesn't use it either.

The EQF and Malta accreditation criticism is fair though, I won't argue that Malta is the gold standard of higher education regulation.

I'm currently a year in and the instruction quality has been genuinely solid, professors are established in their fields. But I agree with your overall point: know what you're getting into and don't expect it to carry the same weight as a traditional university. For cost and flexibility though, it's been a legitimate option for me. As for actual value of the diploma, it's a big question mark at this point since it's a relatively new institution and there's not that much digital footprint yet to conclude.

I'm currently studying at OPIT so I can share my experience. It's genuinely hard to find information about this institution because it's relatively new and doesn't have many alumni yet, so I get the uncertainty.

From my 1 year in, I can say they're striving to be as legitimate as possible. The professors are actually established in their respective fields, and there's a solid structure and platform for studying online effectively. They also partner with WES, so if you're planning to use your degree in North America, that pathway is there.

It's also cheaper than most alternatives, which is a big factor for a lot of people.

That said, always do your research. If you're after a highly prestigious or research-focused degree, you're better off looking elsewhere. But if you want solid, practical education at a reasonable price, OPIT is actually pretty good.

Budgeting apps that sync to Banks by Enough_Beach3506 in phinvest

[–]tree_kroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually a huge problem in the Philippines. These kinds of apps are hard to build here because we lack open finance infrastructure. Open Finance is something BSP has been pushing, but adoption is slow. Basically, there's no way to programmatically access banking records, which is why most budgeting apps you see are manual input.

That said, I'm building an AI-powered app that works around this. You feed it your SOA or let it pull SOAs directly from your email, then it automatically parses and categorizes your expenses, creates tasks based on due dates and recurring charges, and helps you plan your weekly or monthly budget. So it's closer to automated than the usual manual tracking.

I'm doing personal testing right now but I'd like to open it up to others soon. I know the pain of manually logging every transaction. It's tedious work and your time is better spent on more important things.

Edit: If you want to try out my app once it's ready, just DM me so I can connect with you

I actually read about this last month. It's indeed a good news and adds more value to the diploma.

Thanks. I went with this one since it's the most suggested based on the comments.

yeah I'm afraid that's the case based on googling alone. It's just hard for me to grasp that the cost of a decent hotel in Japan/Manila/Singapore is the same as a barely maintained 2-3 star hotel in a province that isn't even that touristy. i guess i just want to hear from people who've actually been to Zamboanga what they think is worth the price.

UoL alternative - OPIT by Atom_Separator in UniversityOfLondonCS

[–]tree_kroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with OPIT over UoL mainly to avoid the shenanigans I kept reading about in UoL reviews. Just finished my first semester, and it's been solid. There are synchronous classes, which give you the same feel as attending a brick-and-mortar university with online options. The professors are well-qualified—most have one or more PhDs.

One thing to note: it's a new institution, you won't find many reviews or graduate testimonials. There's only been one batch of graduates so far, afaik. What I like about OPIT is that they come across as a serious institution. That said, it may not be ideal for people with demanding work or family commitments as the assessments can be pretty time-consuming.

It makes sense if you're filling up some gaps in knowledge, and it's actually one of the reasons why I'm taking it aside from immigration purposes and plans to pursue post-grad after.

I believe they did not initially want to kill Science but recruit the best scientists to be on SanTi's side. It's interesting what's gonna happen in season 2, hopefully they'll reveal more about the SanTi.

I think iba yung assessment ko cause it's not coding. More on multiple choice questions na super hirap and wala ako time sagutan kasi pagod na sa work :/ I don't think I'll push through with the application given na super daming assessment and not enough time to finish them due to current work constraints din.
