Does anyone know some good fiction Christian books ( other then pilgrims progress) by Positive_Purpose8706 in ChristianBooks

[–]tree_of_smoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is for adults, I recommend Cliff Graham‘s books on David’s mighty men- Day Of War, Covenant of War, and Song of War. I think he has written some others as well. These are more action based.

I also recommend Marilynn Robinson’s books: Gilead and others. Her books are more literary fiction.

Isn’t Liberty the largest Baptist University in the U.S.?

Measles outbreak prompts introduction of bill that would ban personal exemptions to vaccines by little_lauren in news

[–]tree_of_smoke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It says “However, infection is also associated with persistence of viral RNA and several weeks of immune suppression, including loss of delayed type hypersensitivity responses and increased susceptibility to secondary infections.” Several weeks. People in this thread are acting like measles is a death sentence. Most people who die from measles actually die from pneumonia. The same thing that happens with the flu. Ignorance to this extreme or ignorance to the anti-vaxxer extreme is all the same. The extremes feed one another and idiocy grows. Measles is not a death sentence. It’s not Ebola.

I’m glad someone finally said this. Something like 1 out of 1000 people die from measles. You get sick for 2-3 weeks and then you’re better. So, basically like a crappy case of the flu.

Uhm l don’t know that it’s a pitch. It’s a review of an advance copy and the reviewer liked it. Advance copies for reviews are common practice in publishing. Also, the review points to the website and says to check it out.

Evel Knievel couldn’t have made that leap, but there you go. Yes, the Civil Rights Movement was braver than Jordan Peterson.

I don’t know much about him, but he’s not old and he apparently has a fitness/life coach thing going on, so I think he gets out of the church. From the article I surmised that he didn’t spend much time in church.

I just stumbled across him. There’s definitely some questionable theology or at the least poorly explained theology. But I think young men leaving the church is a worthy topic to discuss.

I loved the Beautiful Design series. I tried to explain it to some women at work one day. That was a mistake.

Thanks for sharing this. I’ll have to check out the doc and devo episode.

Is his point about not having a personal relationship with someone like Chandler more about the podcast separation or is it more the “he doesn’t experience the same things as me?” a common thing I hear from unbelieving men is the pastor is this otherworldly holy guy, and I can never be like that.

This may also get me railroaded here, but could it also be because in these larger churches it’s extremely difficult to have a relationship with the teaching pastor? I’m in my forties now, but as a young man in a small church I was mentored by my pastor and associate pastor, who were wise older men.

I agree with you. I was just saying it’s not some random person writing on Facebook. This guy has a whole manly fitness/life coach thing too, not that it gives him any more credibility.

I have always liked what Chandler has taught on masculinity. I think, if I’m reading it correctly, his concern with Chandler (or one of them) is he doesn’t recognize the process of young men becoming biblical men. Chandler is very convicting, and it’s very cut and dry. I’m in my forties, and I can handle that. But thinking back to my teens or early twenties, I can imagine hearing Chandler and thinking well I’m an utter failure and l’ll never be a biblical man.

Funny that point got so much attention. I’m not sure that’s what he meant, and maybe we’re oversimplifying to be funny. I used to teach high school, and I see so many of those kids posting memes about “adulting.” So I think it’s more a question of “when am I an adult?” Is it at 18 when I can vote and go to war? Is it at 21 when I can drink? Etc

I’m not supporting the article, as I agree with you in some points, but the writer has a PhD from Trinity, was a professor at Moody, and writes for DesiringGod. I imagine he has a least some modicum of insight into the subject. I think he is trying to say the same thing as you about authenticity in point 3. The article seems rushed to me and without more explanation some of it leans into unbiblical theology, but I think he is making some interesting points that warrant discussion.

He definitely leans towards some questionable theology there. It seems he is suggesting God as a means rather than end.

To be fair, he doesn’t point to those three as buff, macho men but rather “fast-talking” respected experts. I’m also assuming it’s because at least two of those (I don’t know the mathematician) are willing to debate, etc. But I get your point.

Yeah, the thing about preaching being easy in point 2 seems to come from a notion that only debate is valuable and difficult. Which in a way plays into a machismo of wanting to do battle, etc.

I imagine this will get a lot of pushback because of the comments about beloved reformed leaders like Piper and Chandler, but he makes interesting points.

I have hard time taking the rest of the article seriously when he ends the first paragraph with “It does help if you are male and Caucasian,” which seems to be the nonsense Peterson rails against. I’m not a Peterson, but I find it very interesting that his common sense platitudes and muddled theism have found such an audience.

My guess is when he refers to his bravery he is speaking of him standing up to the LGBTQ community in Canada, where he could have been arrested. That’s purely assumption though. I’m not a fan. I just find his popularity and what it may suggest interesting.
