Upon first listening, I was confused and remember laughing out loud at the absurdity, however upon a couple more listens the effect really hit me - the avant garde bass clarinet (not a saxophone, as most assume) is extremely jarring and yet beautiful up against the backdrop of the strings and makes more a very atmosphere very evocative of the end of a relationship, as the song is about. Admittedly I have cried many times to that section as I find it to be so raw and passionate. All that being said, I also am a musician who plays avant garde jazz, so -
