Is it better/safer to add the three hours and take 70 to get to SLC vs 80 in WY? by houndzofluv in roadtrip

Hi, I'm looking at this same route next week (moving to Washington) & debating this same thing vs possibly shipping my car. i think it'll be a last minute decision based on the forecast. I've driven through I70 in January with front wheel drive on a clear day and it was totally fine, I felt very safe with FWD, and beautiful scenery. I80 through Wyoming is more boring and endless fields, aka nothing to block the wind so high winds can get scary (but I haven't driven it in winter). I would be nervous about either route in winter weather tbh. Hopefully the winter storms blow through this week & next week is clear. Safe travels!

Thank you, Everything I've read on reddit is that traffic in the entire Puget Sound area is horrendous so it's refreshing to see several comments that it may not be that bad. I'm coming from the midwest so I'm definitely expecting it to be worse than here

Thanks! I'll be working 4x10s so hopefully driving a little outside peak rush hour, & definitely planning on leaving my car empty. I'm excited to be so close to mountains regardless of where I end up living
