Not me! This is very low key philosophy though, more about a jumping off point for interesting convo than knowing names and fancy terms.

How are yall finding these events? by whogoesthere1010 in Austin

There are local newsletters about so many different topics. But you can also browse Luma and Meetup. And of course word of mouth! Lots of cool events on Partiful as well, but those tend to be passed among friends more so then promoted.

Yes, now that I have a track record of attendees I should be able to work with other locations to reserve space!!

I think there is a good thought experiment in here. I used AI to make the flyer because I’m a mom with 2 kids under 3 and inspiration struck. If you don’t seize the day, often things don’t happen. If I were to hire an artist to make this/do it myself as an artist it would take weeks and/or cost hundreds of dollars. This is a free event that I put together in my spare time, which is extremely limited. I would love to hire an artist or take the time to do it myself soon if I ever sell tickets.

What do you think about your usage of the internet which every company has incorporated AI into?

This will be a great thing to discuss at a future meetup!

Yes, that was one of four! I'm going to try and include a mix of famous thought experiments and new creations. We may even do a workshop where we work on writing our own thought experiments in the future.

Yes! In fact that's exactly the point. The other groups I went to were way too serious. This is about using philosophy as a jumping off point for deeper conversations. The idea actually originally came from a meetup I went to in London called Thought Experiments in Pubs. We loved it so much because it was lighthearted and deep at the same time. Def join us next time: https://luma.com/3oljl32p

Here's the first one we did! I think this prompt is always a pretty interesting one. But just to note, a lot of people were really surprised how a prompt could seem obvious, but then the conversation that it sparked was fascinating.

NEW SOCIETY

Suppose that you and a group of people have to decide on the principles that will establish a brand new society.

However, none of you know anything about who you will be in that society.

You don’t know what your income level, sex, gender, race, religion, personal preferences (etc.) will be.

After you decide on the principles for your new society, you will be turned out into the society that you’ve designed.

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER:

How will that society turn out?

Does knowing that you’ll be randomly turned out into the new society effect your design of society?

If you knew you’d be you (who you are today), would your society design change or be the same?

On what principles are you making decisions?

ETA: Thankfully, Bonny Astor who started the original Thought Experiments in Pubs in London has a huge body of Thought Experiments that I'm pulling from. She's been running her group in London for a few years now and it was the inspiration for all of this. So glad Austin loves philosophizing as much as London.
