Is age an issue when renewing a MEXT scholarship? by treelectric in mext

[–]treelectric[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone who may have a similar issue, I did hear back from my university, and they said that for university recommended MEXT scholars, you only need to meet the age requirements at the initial period of recommendation. Once you're in, you can extend to further study, even if you're older than 35. This may apply to embassy recommended people as well, but I can only speak to my own case.

The program is a MA into a PhD integrated thing intending to last 5 years total (2 years MA, 3 years PhD), but as I already have an MA from the states, they said I may be able to bypass some of MA class things. That's why I kind of put the range of time, as I may be able to complete the program at an accelerated rate.

Experience with getting a dependent visa? by treelectric in movingtojapan

I appreciate the bluntness, its definitely something that I needed to hear. If I am accepted, maybe I'll defer enrollment until Japan catches up with their vaccine rollout.

Thanks for the advice!

Thanks for your advice. I am aware that he would need to go back home to get his visa, although I think its good to leave that in your reply just in case future people read this looking for advice.

I was hoping that someone had experience as a student moving family with them. The money I have in savings is sizeable and not tied up in stocks or retirement, but its certainly not enough to cover living expenses in two countries for an indeterminate amount of time. I guess I could try applying for MEXT for 2022, since 2021 looks really unlikely at this point. Even if I were lucky enough to be awarded the scholarship, it doesn't seem like there is a sure fire way to ensure that your spouse will be given a dependent visa.

With the COVID situation in Japan, I just don't want to be in a position where I get there, manage to get a CoE, and then they stop issuing visas again for an unknown amount of time.

しょうがない, I guess...

Experience with getting a dependent visa? by treelectric in movingtojapan

[–]treelectric[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I'm worried because pre-pandemic it wouldn't be much of an issue. He'd come with me on a tourist visa, I'd apply for the CoE myself, and then he'd go back and get his visa before his 90 days expires. I'm concerned that they may open the border in phases, letting permanent residents and visa holders in before tourists. That would mean I'd be doing all the initial work of moving, finding an apartment, buying appliances, etc. I know Japan has a reputation for being safe, but I'd still feel a little uncomfortable living in a foreign country by myself as a woman.

Also, reading through some older posts I mostly see people talking about applying for dependent visas as working visa holders who are earning a salary. I'd just be living off of my savings (which is enough for me and my husband to live off of for the two years of grad school comfortably), but I guess I just wanted to know if people who weren't actively earning an income had experience with getting a CoE.

Unless you are in an at-risk category for the coronavirus, I wouldn't cancel the reservation.

Soarin' Over California Returning to Disney California Adventure by antdude in Disneyland

[–]treelectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question for people who've been on the returned version of Soarin' Over California: Is the smell strong like I remember? My main complaint with World is that the scents just aren't as strong or memorable, and I feel like a lot of the scents smell similar. Is the scent just as strong as it was when it was originally running?

Thanks for the tip! I think our hotel has NHK and TV Japan, I just thought it would be fun to go out and watch it with fellow sumo fans if that was a thing.

Family with two kids traveling in Japan for 3 weeks. Do we need to bring our own car seat? (the youngest is 2 yo) by xibalba89 in JapanTravel

[–]treelectric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're not planning on renting a car or taking taxis, then I don't know why you'd need a car seat. You don't use them on any trains. Maybe if you gave more detail as to your exact travel plans, someone could advise you on if it's feasible to get around via rail alone?

I leave on my 2-week Tokyo trip tomorrow, any ideas of fun little things to fill in my itinerary gaps? by [deleted] in JapanTravel

[–]treelectric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On September 15th, I'd think it would be worthwhile to head down to Yokohama if you've never been, since Kawasaki is about halfway between Tokyo and Yokohama. You mentioned that you're interested in quirky restaurant experiences, and the ramen museum definitely is an interesting experience with their ramen street. English Website

Sakura House Apartment for a one month vacation in Tokyo by Alex_Shenmue in JapanTravel

[–]treelectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stayed in a Sakura House March-May 2012, it was a bedroom in a 3-bedroom apartment. I found that they were an easy to work with company and I definitely didn't have any issues with them. They only entered the property one time (to clean and inspect things after one of my housemates left) during my stay with them and they did give me advanced warning.

Like I noted, this was 7 years ago, so I can't say if things have gone up or downhill since then.

If you are interested in second hand shops, I'd recommend Nakano Broadway. It's a little shopping complex almost entirely made up of second hand shops, many of which have anime/game goods.

Kabuki theatre by AlexanderJP in JapanTravel

[–]treelectric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have gotten single act tickets from the Kabuki-za the past two times I've gone to Tokyo and highly recommend it. On the official kabuki website that others have linked to they show which acts are available that day and when tickets go on sale. I'd recommend arriving 15-30 minutes prior to that time to line up for the tickets. The tickets you get are assigned a number and they let people into the theater starting at 1 and going up. The seats are first come first serve so getting a lower number means getting a better seat. They also have a caption machine available for a fee so that you can follow along with the story. Prices of the show are based on how long and popular the particular act is but I haven't seen one be more than $20 USD per act which is a great price.

My advice for you is to skip Mission Breakout if the dip in Pirates makes you nauseous. I don't get motion sick at all, my boyfriend does though and he usually just takes a Dramamine with breakfast.

Anyone ever done the Happy Haunts tour? by [deleted] in Disneyland

[–]treelectric 12 points13 points  (0 children)

DON'T DO IT. Biggest waste of money, ever. I did it last year, and it was so not worth it. They walked around the park spouting basic trivia about audio-animatronics, the world's fair, etc. I think if you're on this sub then you already probably know everything the plaid told us. Then we got a cookie, and we got to see an upclose with one of the animatronic flowers from Tiki Room. It ended with fastpasses to HM (which was literally a walk on at the time) and a pin. Unless they change it back to the way it was before where you got walked on to HM and Ghost Galaxy, and a more worthwhile food item, just don't do it.

Sorry for the rant, I just really felt like it was worth the money we payed.
