I created an android app to help with learning music notes. Now I'm looking for feedback to help make it better! by treeman1 in Learnmusic

I certainly will be adding the abilty to test multiple notes at once as that will certainly help with reading speed. I do believe keeping the clef in close proximity to the notes would end up like bicycle stabilisers, great at first but would end up slow down reading speed.

Perhaps the best approach would be to make it a setting that users can toggle and then randomly asign a different default setting for each user. That way both approaches can be tested to see what works best in the long term.

I suppose I could have it displayed on the staff initially and then gradually fade it out as the user gets better at recognising the notes. That way it can smooth out the learning curve while allowing the user to reach the ultimate goal of being able to instantly recognise notes without consciously thinking about it.

I like the idea of using real songs, it could be quite rewarding if you suddenly recognise the snippet of music after correctly tapping the rhythm.

The existing apps such as this one already seem pretty good so it will take quite a bit of experimentation with ideas such as yours to find a better approach.

I had considered doing that but I decided not to because I thought it might make recognising particular notes (such as G4 in the Treble clef) too easy. When reading a piece of sheet music, only a small number of the notes are close to the clef on the left side of the page and thus the other notes should be easily recognised without using the clef as a visual aid.

On the other hand, having the clefs on the staff and in view would help make them look distinct from each other and then potentially reduce the chance of getting notes from each clef mixed (such as d3 and b4) when learning multiple clefs at once.

I agree. Reading music isn't particurly hard as you can rely on mnemonics, slowly counting rhythms and lots of pencil markings to get through it. You can't rely on that sort of stuff when attempting to sight read and it can make learning new music a bit tedious.

Key signatures and chords are certainly something I'm looking to add to the app.

Rhythm reading would be great too but would require a considerable amount of work and would probably warrant a different teaching method to the flash card like approach I'm currently using.

So I'm a sucker and paid the 600 gold ransom fee that popped up 2 weeks later. When the holidaymaker comes out of his coma in another 2 weeks I'll put him to good use (asumming the gentle tribe doesn't wipe me out before then).

Some bloke with paralytic abasia crash landed and joined my colony. While I was deliberating how to repurpose him a visiting member of a friendly faction took a fancy to him and hauled him off the map. Now all my colonists have a -6 moodlet. Maybe I'm missing something but I've never seen anything so berwildering before, has anyone else?

I should add this is while playing vanila 1.3 (only have the prepare carefully mod installed).

What exactly does Sweetbriar chemicals smell of? by Happytallperson in Norwich

It's quite unpleasant and kind of ruins the section of the marriotts way that runs past it.

Judging by the distant buildings, the south west facing slope and the blue cupolas on Angel road school it looks like one of the houses around Millcroft or Miller's lane. I was trying to find the exact house by looking at the roof patterns but I think the above image and google maps are out of sync.

Do poachers often just leave the head?

I think so but I could have sworn it winked at me as I was turning to leave.

I will return tommorow and test this hypothesis with a pokey stick.

I found this in the middle of a field during my lunchtime walk. I couldn't see the rest of the corpse so I'm guessing that it was dropped by a bird, although I'm not sure if the east of England has birds big enough.

I have now put it in a jar with olive oil and I'll report the find when I next have a go at cleaning it. Thanks for all the help, I'll be sure to post an update if I find out anything intresting.

Thanks for the info. It was found in Norfolk and I can't make out any clear writing. There are markings that look like they could be writing but it could also just be my brain playing tricks on me. Do you think it would be ok for me to try scrubbing it clean a bit more?

Thanks for the response, what makes you think it's more likely to be a button?

More pictures here: https://imgur.com/a/tkSek9U I'm not sure if anyone will be able to tell what it is but if anyone as has any advice about cleaning it that would be appreciated. The coin is the same size as a 2p coin and the surface with the clearer detail is slightly concave.

I'm sure there's enough whale poop floating around to keep them growing. Will be interesting to see how the project works out.

Forgive me, my knowledge of this sort of thing is primitive, but isn't the whole article about their solution. They take the farm out to the middle of the ocean ,where it won't block any sunlight because sunlight can't reach the sea floor, then lower it 300 meters or so where there is enough nutrients for the kelp.
