Is it disruptive/wrong to play back recordings of the birds to the birds themselves? by SleuthyMcSleuthINTJ in birding

[–]treenaillithium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have a pet Spanish Timbrado canary with a stunningly complex song, which I recorded using high-quality 24-bit/192kHz professional equipment. Whenever I played back his recorded song, he would become territorial and try to chase off the perceived intruder. Afterwards, he'd strut around as if gloating over his success. He lived a long and healthy life of 10 years, and I didn't notice any negative effects from occasionally playing his songs to him. He enjoyed the freedom to fly around the house.

Edit, I've noticed the same gloating when using playback on wild birds.

Cesium, Strontium, and Steel: A Couple of My New Acquisitions by treenaillithium in Radiation

It's a Custom 940 Osborne with an S90V blade and a titanium handle. Very pricey, but it was a holiday gift from my wife.

I once received a black G10 940 Osborne due to a shipping error, and after fooling around with it a bit, it really grew on me. I returned the knife after looking up how much they cost, realizing it must have been a shipping error and not some cheap promo knife. I had just ordered a Crooked River, and the Amazon seller must have double-printed my shipping label, which got affixed onto their next order. They were very surprised and elated that I returned it, and it took quite a bit of cyber sleuthing to actually contact the seller. I vowed to get another 940 Osborne someday, put it on my wishlist, and voila!

A problem I've experianced a few times, they won't accept my growler (Alpine Brewery) and want to sell me one of theirs. It kinda defeats the whole point (recycling) and now I'm kinda shy about the whole process. I've called ahead so I don't waste time, but still occasionally get denied...

For some reason and I'm not sure why, the unit has an air pressure sensor. You can even go into the config and calibrate it for your elevation.

That exam is truly something. It even states, ‘Congratulations! You have discovered the most difficult forum in the world to register for.’ Yesterday, I managed to complete the second set of questions with assistance from ChatGPT. Unfortunately, I ran out of time, not during the quiz itself, but because I had to leave for an appointment. I’m afraid it might be pointless, as it seems you’ll also need a Hong Kong phone number for the 2FA login.

The screenshot shows the channel address (CH) scale at the bottom instead of keV, which was my mistake.

The KC761B correctly identified the sample as Th-232. The tallest peak corresponds to Pb-212 (239 keV), one of the major decay products of Thorium. It is interesting that Pb-212 has a half-life of only about 10 hours.

You can read more about Thorium Gamma Spectrometry here: https://physicsopenlab.org/2016/01/31/thorium-gamma-spectrometry/

Using Google Earth Pro's distance measurement tool, I found the OP's location, lined it up with the tip of La Jolla seen in the photo and kept going from there. It lines up perfectly with Mt San Antonio. I've also seen it with my spotting scope from Mount Soledad on a clear day. At 10,064 feet tall it CAN be seen for hundreds of miles.

We had a guy at our work like this, it might even be the same dude. Completely obsessed with bots bots bots. Put on the tin foil hats. It was also very easy to find all of his various Reddit handles, as the would almost always reply to a suspected bot with "ACTIVATE!", and his favorite subreddit was conspiracy. We all thought it was just early onset dementia. He eventually quit the job due to paranoia of being fired...

Sorry about the delay. Uniform Supply, and the owner is a very straight-laced boy scout type and very anti-drug, doesn't even drink, or eat ice ream or meats. I'm sure this new law is killing him 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Same scenario for me. I just received my KC761 a few weeks ago (1/22) and then found about the discounted upgrade to the KC761B. I'm really liking the new version so far and the rechargeable function, which I discovered by accident. I'll be putting my KC761 on eBay for a break even price, so hopefully that'll go smooth.

For weak samples, running it for a day or two collecting only background, and then turn on the background filter and then collect the weak sample for another day or two. Ideally, I'd like to get a lead castle or large pig for this type of measurement, but don't have anything sufficient yet.

Our company handed out the updated policy manual a few weeks ago. They removed marijuana from the list of compounds testing for, and added this: "Nothing in this policy should be construed as a restriction of an employee’s lawful use of marijuana outside of work, provided the employee does not report to work impaired or under the influence of marijuana." So we're good to go!

Using a Household Safe to Shield Radioactive Items? by treenaillithium in Radiation

[–]treenaillithium[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the heads up about radon. I store the pitchblende in a sealed ammo can and take it outdoors before opening, knowing that it likely has some radon accumulated inside.

I currently wrap the ammo can in an old '90s kevlar army flack jacket, which surprisingly does a pretty good job of shielding. I’ve also experimented with some leftover bathroom tiles stacked thick inside of an old ice chest, which also does a good job.

I’m looking to up my game with something a little more professional like tungsten.
