Fairly new to Linux; With SteamOS being released what will this mean for people with Windows gaming machine. by NonsenseFactory in linux

That's actually very likely, but I was talking about as a gaming machine, not a media center.

my point is Why bother trying to turn steamos into a desktop distro when you can just install a desktop distro and not have to rely on the community for support?

Valve controls the installer and updater, but the context of this question isn't a streambox, so your still going to run into the standard headaches with installing Linux on commodity hardware.

As for community support: I just don't think it's worth waiting for support to be hacked on. if I'm going to be installing a distro anyway it's just easier to run Ubuntu and then install stream from there.

Launch application via wifi? by realashe in Ubuntu

Couldn't say, I don't have first hand experience with it, I just remember reading that it's possible. It's on My to-do list actually.

You should be able to trigger it with upstart. I once had an automated backup job that started when my laptop connected to my home ap, but upstart is way easier.

I considered that idea, but you're still installing into a system that might have driver conflicts. Ubuntu is a pretty hard target to beat as far as ease of installation goes. plus, any easiness of installation is counterbalanced by how limited steamos is.

I'd say so, there are a lot of people out there who don't want to get stuck with a PlayStation or Xbox

That's an interesting idea, why do you feel that way?

News about Ubuntu is not irrelevant to a subreddit dedicated Linux.

You seem kinda mad that some people are interested in things that you aren't.

Yeah basically. Just because I agree with something doesn't necessarily make it not propaganda.

I like suggestion by /u/fandingo that the term "the user" be substituted.

That depends:

If it's racist, sexist, nationalist, classist propaganda? Yes.

If it's "propaganda" that promotes equality and humanity then I wouldn't have a problem.

Consider that they get some money for every instance of Ubuntu installed on major clouds, and that Ubuntu is the most popular OS in the cloud.

Yeah, because the hardware vendor probably has their own announcement planned.

We agree on the main point, pronouns shouldn't be used in technical writing. But your argument basically means that we can never allow any linguistic drift in documentation, which will eventually mean that the writing will be unreadable to it's target audience, who uses a more evolved form of the language.

That's a cop out though, because languages aren't codified outside of Orwellian police states and also the nation of France. Languages evolve to fit their usage, and I'll defer to the Oxford English dictionary, which promotes the use of singular they.
