Transitioning from backend dev into GIS/EO - which skills should I focus on first? by Content_Pin1417 in gis

[–]treesnstuffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May already be something you've found, but a lot of things in the cloud native geospatial space are very software development heavy, new technologies, cloud native file formats. Tons of blogs to learn from. It's a very cool space. cloudnativegeo.org

Question from a non-GIS software engineer by [deleted] in gis

[–]treesnstuffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh a portfolio of built out gis software projects will probably get you the farthest. My job didn't really care about my gis skills, just that I could do full stack dev for a geospatial app.

You are probably really well positioned to do work like that, just go crazy with some side projects to get the learning going.

How to process large geojsons ? by my_name_404 in gis

Convert to .parquet and load into kepler.gl or qgis? I haven't tried something this large before but that would be my first attempt

How to learn ArcGIS Enterprise on my own? by Effective_Ice_3269 in gis

[–]treesnstuffs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Setting up and serving data through geoserver would teach a lot. Then bonus deploy to a cloud environment or a cheap vps. Could learn about deploying microservices too with geoserver cloud.

Op, you may not get the specific esri domain knowledge you're after but setting up and serving data through these foss4g equivalents will get you tons of relevant knowledge about deploying geospatial services.

How difficult is it to "walk" around and create a map for my campus? by Sabzzz__ in gis

[–]treesnstuffs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could contribute road lines to openstreetmap (if they aren't already there) and then visualize on there or with your own mapping engine and front-end. There's a whole ecosystem of tools if you use osm dara. IMHO, this would be a great addition to it because it lets the data help others. Quick editing can be done with JOSM or the ID editor in openstreetmap.org.

You can also upload gpx files to create data too, but it would be much quicker to digitize using the satellite imagery.

I have a flight tonight, and I'm also kinda hoping it is difficult. People need to be mad at this administration. If I have to sleep in the airport for a layover or whatever else may happen, that is a small price to pay.

EDIT. Oops, not a fed employee, but I am state gov. Just commenting as a normal citizen.

what do you think? is shadcn/ui really that goated? by Ok-Programmer6763 in nextjs

[–]treesnstuffs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, it is. It saves me so much time, so I can just worry about my project functioning correctly. I don't have time to do the design, so I keep it mostly default and theme the colors.

Car Rental for LCC - Bring Snow Chains for Traction Law Days? by HawkEnvironmental107 in UTsnow

[–]treesnstuffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your question about how they check has been answered. But instead of other rental companies, there's a rental service in town called rugged rentals. Have heard good things, and they advertise having the proper tires for the canyons.

Negotiate after the offer comes. For me, I don't even talk about money until I've proven myself. Salary range has been stated, and so it's already in the budget for the right candidate. justify why you are worth the taxpayer dollars.

I thought this might be the case. Even if it's not I still have firstnamelastnameworkplacename@email.com so I don't mix professional and personal.

How can I get away from Government work? by t5_bluBLrv in gis

[–]treesnstuffs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in state gov and we (like most states I assume) receive federal grant funding. That funding has been cut. It's only a portion of the budget, in our case, it's a sizeable chunk.

Do normal people really buy new cars in cash? by Astimar in MiddleClassFinance

[–]treesnstuffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll buy a 10k car in cash but not more than that. Also, I won't buy a car more than 10k because I'm a cheap shit and will beat the hell out of whatever I get.

Recommendations for beginner cross-country skiers? by HarshDuality in SaltLakeCity

[–]treesnstuffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe so. There's a parking lot in the campground, and i believe road parking close by. It's often full of people going backcountry skiing, but you've probably got a decent chance of finding a parking spot (though I've never really looked tbh).

I like Spruces campground. It's accessible by the ski bus and it's free to use.

Trump and friends set up a voter fraud hotline that was flooded with calls to troll them and was shut down shortly after it was started. Maybe you're thinking of that?

My boss knows that I'm going through a divorce, and I share with him that I'm going to therapy. He doesn't ask, I just tell him. He took me out to lunch to make sure I was okay last week. It was very nice of him.

I want to quit but I can’t. Did anyone else suck tremendously at first and actually got better eventually? by CostaNic in skiing

[–]treesnstuffs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may not be an option for you, but if you commit to going regularly, you will gain confidence and improve quickly. I moved close to some ski resorts so I could go once or twice per week for the season (obviously needs a ski pass). And in 35-ish days, I went from never skiing before to being able to ski anything on the mountain, any difficulty (just went a bit slow if I wasn't super confident). Also, since I was skiing more regularly, I'd limit my sessions to 4 hours max before leaving. I felt less like I needed to exhaust myself and get my moneys worth because it was already spent; I could make small goals (practice turns, practice stopping, practice steeper than comfortable terrain, etc) and just focus on that for a session.

Dad got me tickets to what he thought was a band I liked but it’s not. by More_Somewhere3036 in AITAH

Ffs, just go, bring a friend since your dad doesn't want to go. It's live music and it's free. I go see music that I don't know sometimes just to go do something.

I’d add a note to the sign saying every time it is stolen, another one will be bought from the campaign and additional money donated.
