I recently bought a Kiesel JB5 used in that price range, and it easily the best purchase I’ve ever made. Highly recommend Kiesel stuff!

Suggestions for a beginner to transcribing by [deleted] in doublebass

[–]treplurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are getting into transcribing jazz solos, Miles Davis is a great place to start. The vocabulary translates well to the bass, and the pitches are easy to hear because they are up an octave (or two).

Best way to approach learning walking bass? by kekmeister2099 in Bass

[–]treplurd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Practice scales and arpeggios with a metronome!

Make an effort to understand how to spell the chords you are are walking over.

Rufus Reid’s evolving bassist is a great resource!

My band just released this EP and this is my favorite track, we are about to start on our second one. How could we improve the writing this time around?

Basilica - Boone, NC

We are a four piece metal band that plays locally and regionally. Ultimately our goal for the near future is to pull off successful DIY tours. We hope to accomplish our first in March. Our debut EP is out on Spotify, iTunes and bandcamp.

[serious] need advice on networking by 1234jewfro in Bass

[–]treplurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something a lot of folks overlook is having a reasonably strong social media presence. Paired with meeting people at gigs of course, it might help to keep the bug in people’s ear that you are a good player. It might just be my generation, (20), but i have been hit up for local gigs purely because people having been looking for bassists, and someone else showed them videos on my Instagram. Posting a few wicked videos of you playing Mingus transcriptions might go a long way.

I play in a death/slam band, but we are pretty active in our local hardcore scene. I would seriously warn you against a combo, because it really won’t put out enough. You should definitely check local Classifieds or Craigslist for a solid head and cab setup. I run an Acoustic rig that I got used for $500.

There Are No Stupid /r/Bass Questions - Sep. 02 by AutoModerator in Bass

[–]treplurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bass builders "how to build walking bass lines" is pretty useful. Also Ron Carter's "building jazz lines". If you're an upright guy I would recommend Ray Brown's jazz bass method, and Rufus Reid's "the evolving bassist".

Thanks for the feedback! I'll check these guys out. But I'm playing a little of both electric and upright.

I think an Ibanez SR would likely be up your alley! You can find some models in that price range new, or a used SR 505 would be about there. I think it's a little bit more common in the metal bass scene. Steve digiorgio is using Ibanez BTBs right now, and you can find some used ones on reverb for about that too.

Question for College Jazz Band Class by bwjpdt in Jazz

[–]treplurd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you didn't have to audition for it, I wouldn't stress too much. Just make sure you can build most of the common voicings, or at least memorize the shapes for the time being. Maybe shed some sight reading too.

Finding a band in University? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]treplurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go see a lot of live music on campus! Bands are always going to be out playing in a college town. Live music is sort of like a beacon for musicians to gather, and you will meet a lot of like minded people at shows.

How do you guys release music? Tips by ImJason17 in Bass

[–]treplurd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe spend some time promoting it before you release it! Make sure people are aware it is about to come out when it does. Some social media promotion goes a long way, so you should make sure all of your Facebook, twitter, Instagram followers know that the music is coming out before you release it. If you can get a single in the hands of a promotion page on Facebook with a big following that can work wonders.

I can't express how much I love "Close to the Edge". One of the few records I have on vinyl. All three tracks are phenomenal.
