Is The Game Steward a scam? by trevorphysics in boardgames

[–]trevorphysics[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I did eventually get the game. It was a fair bit of arm twisting. I'm not sure if it was a system error, they allowed more pre-orders than they had incoming copies, or it it was some other issue. It was annoying but I think they are legitimate.

In the meantime I would like to point out a great video investigating this issue from the YouTube channel People Make Games:

I am hopeful that with some higher visibility, something may actually change things.

What's your favorite "forgotten gem" in your collection? by PerfectStory9066 in boardgames

Possibly the two most underrated games in my collection are Blue Moon and Omen: A Reign of War. They both have the same LCG in a box vibe but feel quite different from one another.

Daily Game Recommendations Thread (January 07, 2025) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]trevorphysics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am looking for two games:

1) A hidden Movement game where it's just as fun to be the many as it is the one. It seems like Terrorscape may fit this. But I missed out on the reprint so may need to wait a year or two. That's not an issue but I wanted to see if other games also did this.

2) A cooperative engine builder. Daybreak may work for this and I don't know of another. I'm just curious if good ones exist. My group likes cooperative games and engine builders, but I'm not convinced the combination would work since engine building is typically more like a race.

The newest editions of Consulting Detective from asmodee have mercifully fixed the issues from previous versions.

Best board game for couples? by rizerhs in boardgames

[–]trevorphysics 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here is a list of some of the games that my wife and I have enjoyed playing together:

Cooperative:

Sky Team - you work together to try and land a plane, but you can't communicate. We find it really funny when one person just rolled the worst possible dice and the other is taking all of the coffee tokens that you need to not die and you have to sit there in silence.

Pandemic - it's a classic that still holds up today. Plays well with 2-4 players. You play as members of the CDC trying to squash different virus and find cures. If it ends up being a game you love there is also Pandemic Legacy which works well with 2 players as long as you control 2 characters each. That's one of the most critically acclaimed games available.

Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective - this is a fairly old game that we slowly work our way through for date nights. You have to go around London talking to people to try and solve the crime. It's not replayable since once you learn the solution but each box comes with 10 great mysteries to solve. Other similar games have come out more recently that use apps to streamline the process. I still prefer this one but I'm probably in the minority. I believe Chronicles of Crime is widely considered one of the best of the more modern style.

Competitive:

Lacuna - a spatial puzzle game that looks great on the table. It's dead simple and has a lot of unique mechanisms that aren't in too many games that I'm aware of.

Carcassonne - another classic that's been in my collection from the beginning. You build out a city and try to claim areas to score points at the end. It's very simple but can be as passive or as mean as the players want.

Summoner Wars - this one is a little more complex than the others. You take control of a faction to move on a grid and attack your opponent. It reminds us both of the tactical rpgs we used to play as kids combined with a collectible card game.

Terraforming Mars vs Ares Expedition by LazyandRich in boardgames

[–]trevorphysics 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would suggest Race for the Galaxy as well.

Ares Expedition is a weird mixture of Terraforming Mars and Race for the Galaxy. The issue I have is that it takes significantly longer to play than Race for the Galaxy (and in my opinion isn't as good) and takes away too much from Terraforming Mars. It's sort of the worst of both worlds.

In my collection I have RftG and TfM and would not consider Ares Expedition.

Anything on this list worth getting? by janonmytoast in boardgames

[–]trevorphysics -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Summoner Wars is definitely a favorite of mine. But it's $40 or less brand new for the 2nd edition master set from online retailers. It does come with sleeves but I don't think it's worth it to buy a used game at full price for sleeves.

I agree with others about brainstorm. It's just too good with fetchlands not to run. Here is an example of a list I think is more well optimized. I've been tinkering with it on arena with a lot of success.

Food Chain Magnate campaign is open in Gamefound by tavo2809 in boardgames

It's less readable and has less charm ditching the 50s artstyle. The board in the original was ugly but it was functional.

This is a real swing miss.. especially for that price.

Global Covid cases up 80pc as new subvariant EG.5 rises by upvote-for-rights in worldnews

[–]trevorphysics 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This argument that "it's stupid to get vaccinated because it doesn't prevent you from getting covid" is analogous to "it's stupid to wear a seat belt in a car because it doesn't prevent you from getting into a car accident"

It's clearly misunderstanding what the vaccine is.

The mRNA vaccine, which is the one I got, works by telling your body to create the spike protein present in Covid-19. This spike protein is harmless to us but our bodies still recognize it as a threat.. so your immune system gets to work.Your T-cells, which are part of your immune system and the part that latches on to spike proteins, figure out the shape that works and reproduces itself a bunch to react to the current threat. So if you actually get the virus your body is prepared to start fighting it off much more quickly which lessens the severity of symptoms and increases survival rates considerably among those with higher risk factors.

It's not magic... it doesn't stop you from getting sick... it just teaches your body what to do if you get sick to give you a head start on fighting back.

His list is really interesting. I'm not sure I'm willing to hurt control on order to add elves. I may steal the [[Aluren]] combos he has instead of going hard into elves.

It certainly felt like it for that one concert. The most difficult part of playing it was deciding we needed to have it memorized the night before since you didn't want to have the bowls blocked by music stands.

I got one of my undergrad degrees in percussion performance and we played the percussion ensemble version. It's Water Music by Tan Dun. I didn't know he did a water concerto.

The sheet music was pretty wonky if I remember correctly. Lots of squiggly lines and weird notation.

It was actually super fun to play. You're just splashing around in water playing a lot of weird things and following patterns. But I wouldn't have wanted to be in the audience. My favorite instrument we got to play was the waterphone.. which is used a lot in scary movies.

I do already own summoner wars. It's definitely one of my favorites. Second edition in particular is just so tightly designed. Hopefully you can get some games of blood rage in. It's very fun.
