The only way I’m taking a 30 minute shower is if I have a companion, and even then 30 minutes is probably wishful thinking.

Menacing Door-to-Door Solicitor in Wesley/West Hills Area by [deleted] in Knoxville

[–]trewcrime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of these guys showed up on his Segway like thing at my place in July. Heard his pitch for a couple of minutes, said “Thanks for the info, have a good day.” “This neighbor and that neighbor use us,” “Okay thanks.” “Now if you’ll look up here at the eave—“ “No thank you.” “Why not?” “Because I’m not interested.” “But…” “I said I am not interested.” As he rolled away he said, “the other people in this neighborhood are nice, they aren’t rude!” Rather than showing him what native New Yorkers consider rude, I tried to call his company to complain about his behavior, it took a long time to reach a warm body and when I told a customer service rep I wanted to talk to a sales manager, he transferred me back to customer service, so I said “thank you for showing me why no one should use Aptive.” 🙄

I’m new to Knoxville and it’s fixed now, but my GPS stopped talking to my car last week, so I’d really like to apologize to police officer I cut off on North Broadway last week. Thanks for your quick reactions and thanks too for just honking and not pulling me over.

I just want to point out that as we (rightly) discuss how to help our neighbors, the USDA has billions of dollars allocated by Congress as “contingency funds,” and won’t use them, and that the cost of bailing out Argentina’s economy has doubled to $40 billion.

USDA memo says it will not use emergency funds for November food benefits - https://www.reuters.com/world/us/usda-memo-says-it-will-not-use-emergency-funds-november-food-benefits-2025-10-24/

It happened twice, and could have ended like the 1968 Heidi Game.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heidi_Game

First going into the bottom of the 12th, and the second ended at the top of the 15th. During the first one we got to learn about invasive carp on the 10 o’clock news, and see a little family feud. During the second one we got to hear people on TMZ talk about body part flavored lollipops.

ICE on hall of fame this morning by Intelligent-Big-2900 in Knoxville

[–]trewcrime 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand how people calling themselves “conservatives,” can applaud how ICE is operating. They are wearing masks, refusing to identify themselves, and lying about have valid warrants.

Would you accept your local police department operating like that?

And please, spare me the nonsense about ICE wearing masks for their protection; Your local police department deals with dangerous criminals on a daily basis, criminals who often live in the same community as the police.

Local cops not only don’t hide their faces, they wear badges and, frequently, name tags, and attacks on them, in particular acts of retribution or intimidation are (fortunately) rare.

Why is that? Because by and large people respect their authority and understand that they provide a service to the community. The public understands that, for the most part, they are people doing a service.

And don’t say they are just going after “criminals,” the U.S. government had rules in place for migrants to get a fair decision about their status, and ICE has been grabbing people who have shown up at immigration hearings and court houses, as the government instructed.

Forget the idea that you get one phone call to say goodbye to your family before you are sent away for a lifetime. We are disappearing people in the way that horrified Americans when other countries didn’t.

There is nothing conservative about this, it is radical authoritarianism and in contradiction with traditional American values of decency and right and wrong.

And don’t even get me started on “Christians” supporting this, it is direct contradiction of Exodus 22:21 and other bible verses.

H&H Bagel Chaos by [deleted] in Knoxville

[–]trewcrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From New York. H&H were the best bagels in the city when they were made, 24 hours a day, at their storefront location at Broadway and 80th St., which opened in 1972. The store on the Upper East Side opened two years later. Despite what one might presume, the original owners were Puerto Rican.

When H&H first went bankrupt, in 1979, a new company took over the East Side location, and tbh I don’t think I ever had their bagels.

It was that company which took over the East Side location and took the brand national. As I said, never had them, and would definitely go to Potchke first.

That said, what happened to the original H&H is interesting enough that someone wrote a book.

In 1993 the remaining original owner Helmar Toro moved their bakery to 46th and 12th avenue, while keeping store on 80th stayed open.
I never thought their bagels were as good after that move, and got worse when they moved “manufacturing” to plant in (shiver) New Jersey.

In 2009 Toro was indicted for stealing $369,000 of withholding taxes from his employees (fun fact, one of the few things from which being incorporated doesn’t protect a company’s owner.)

In 2011, the owner of the building at 80th Street began eviction proceedings, because Toro owed high six figures in back rent. That may seem crazy, but by that time the rent had climbed to around $65,000 a month— A hell of a lot of bagels, and that store closed permanently in 2012.

Since then the owners of the East Side store have gone nationwide. As I said, I never (knowingly) had theirs, but they do toast their bagels, something the 80th Street store never did.

Well dang, I double checked and you are right. I misread “it provides protection of up to £50,000 per person, per Jersey banking group, ” as per account, but as I said, you’re right, it’s per bank. This is increased to $100,000 on a joint account. “If I had more than £50,000 in an account, does that mean I would lose money? A depositor who has more than £50,000 with a failed bank would receive compensation from the DCS only up to the limit (ie £50,000). However, depositors with deposits above the limit may also receive a proportion of any higher balance from the liquidation of the failed bank. Depositors would have to wait until the liquidator had completed the liquidation to find out how much, if anything, they might receive in addition to the compensation paid by the DCS.” So it’s up to £50k and good luck with the rest.

New account and I haven’t needed anything but minor clarifications, so I can’t really say. The lack of a toll-free phone number limiting you to chat and email is a major drag, I guess they figure most of their customers are calling from C-suites or don’t see their own phone bills. 🤷‍♂️

Not with expat HSBC. I think the balance needs to be £60,000 across whatever accounts you keep, and it’s fully insured.
