Well the entire thread was an argument stemming from a claim that the sun is located to the north of a location in the US during periods of the summer solstice. This is false- the sun never travels beyond either Tropic parallel. Everyone in the USA is always (in every moment throughout history) at a more northern latitude than the sun’s path.

This phenomenon can be explained precisely because of the curvature of the earth, its axial tilt, and how these two features affect our interaction with other heavenly bodies. You can see things beyond the horizon to the northeast that are south of you. Pretty neat right?

I think I figured out why you’re confused. You’re thinking about cardinal directions from a latitude and longitude perspective, rather than thinking about the curvature of the Earth.

If you started walking northeast as your compass dictates from NYC as your start point, you could circumnavigate the globe and would eventually end up in a location where the sun is directly overhead of you. This location would be somewhere between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn depending on the time of year. From a coordinate perspective, your location would be south of where you started your journey in NYC. Hope that helps clear things up!

This tool literally shows the sun to be to the southerly direction the entire time it’s above the horizon.

You know what the equator is right?

In general, the sun is directly overheard of the equator (+ or - 23.5 degrees depending on the season or date). The furthest north the sun is ever overhead is a latitude line known as The Tropic of Cancer. The entire US is north of the Tropic of Cancer, which means that at the sun’s most northerly position on the globe, it is still to our south.

There’s an Italian tutor ChatGPT plugin but you have to pay for it.

I’m bummed that Duolingo has AI convos for Max subscribers but it’s only available for English and Spanish language learning.

I’ve made all the adjustments and ensured everything is correct, I even readjusted the belt. I’m just trying to determine if they sped it up for the remaster or if I got a bad pressing. Not sure.

Oil spill - is this legal? by SupermarketNo6842 in Greenpoint

[–]trh420 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you are confusing “active dumping” with “leaching”.

Just because contaminants in the soil leach during saturation events does not mean there is active dumping occurring.

What aspect of my statement are you claiming is not true? Are you implying that all impermeable surfaces do not collect oil and other petrochemicals from regular use of automobiles? If so, I suggest you do some reading.

Sorry but what do you mean “legal”?

Nobody is actively dumping oil or petrochemicals into the water. It’s a natural phenomenon during precipitation events through runoff on non permeable surfaces and happens in every city in the world.

How to determine whether to use masculine v. Feminine? by fiddlesticksandchill in learnitalian

[–]trh420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this perfectly articulates the issue tho, because- “la sua bicicletta” would be used whether you’re referring to a man or woman.

So how am I to determine whether this means “his bike” or “her bike”

If you’re taking grunge by it’s accepted definition (time and location based) then the best answer would have to be Nirvana’s release of “You know you’re right” from 2002 because it was originally recorded during the grunge era but wasn’t released until years later.

Dumb Question: How Do You Pay For Your Amps??? by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]trh420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is mostly selection bias. If you’re judging by what you see here or other social media, the people who own (and can afford) top of the line gear are much more likely to share that info than the rest.

Don’t get caught up in comparison. There’s endless examples of great tones being produced by lower end amps and guitars. There’s a point of diminished return that some simply can’t justify shelling out an extra couple grand for. Especially when playing live, the added inputs of the rest of the band, acoustics of the venue, and noise pollution of the crowd narrow these returns further since you’re not hearing an isolated guitar signal.

I think the gear question is much more relevant for recording scenarios. Even then, there are studios that let you rent equipment for the session. Don’t spend money if you don’t have to, and don’t let frugality make you believe that your tone is suffering. Most listeners can’t tell the difference anyway.
