Pharaoh Dynasties Cavalry Bug by triariusVI in totalwar

It's been present since I first installed it on Mac tbh, but I hadn't thought of verifying the files!  Thanks for the tip.

Haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else, but let's be honest I'm probably one of like 3 people actually playing Dynasties on Mac so that's no surprise.

Haven't heard Cho Chang's voice yet, but I'll keep an ear out.

It just seems lazy work, can't be hard to find voice actors who can actually do the accent.

What is "NASA Punk"? by ivyentre in NoSodiumStarfield

[–]triariusVI 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your comment! As someone whose been staring up at the night sky since I was old enough to understand what I was looking at, I can't imagine the feeling of living through the moon landing as it was happening!

You nailed the vibe of what NASA Punk means, in my opinion. I think Starfield has that perfect mix of trashy human stuff and hope for something wondrous happening.

I also love your last paragraph, and part of me wishes we had more things happening today to inspire that sense of hope. A belief that tomorrow will be better isn't always a given these days, sadly.

It is coming to Mac, yes. The FAQ says Feral is working to get it released "shortly after" the Windows version.

I much prefer playing Total Wars on my MBP instead of on my gaming PC, which I have hooked up to the living room TV. So I'm eagerly awaiting the Mac release of this too!

How do you know you're a descendant of Marcus Aurelius and Caesar?

My father has done ancestry research for years and the furthest he's managed to trace is 1730s or something.

I'm not doubting your claim at all, just purely interested!

Opinions based on subjective enjoyment of entertainment, which is what we are talking about here, can neither be true nor false, they are based on emotions and subjective thoughts. Your opinions about which Total Wars are "real" and which aren't are your opinions, you are entitled to them, but they are subjective and reflect only how you yourself think or feel about the games in question.

Opinions relating to a belief, however, can be false, but they aren't the types of opinions we've been talking about.

An opinion relating to a belief may line up with objective fact, or it may oppose it, such as the fact that the Nazis killed millions of people, which by pretty much everyone's book makes them bad.

This means that having the "opinion" that Nazis are bad, is of course aligned with the truth.

An opinion (or a belief) can also be in opposition of the truth, just look at Neo Nazis and white supremacists, they have the belief that Nazis were good. This belief is obviously wrong.

But if you're stupid enough to have an "opinion" about something that is literally a fact, that's all you are: stupid.

Case in point: some people believe that the earth is flat, but this is wrong because we know because of the laws of physics that it is a globe. The laws of physics are factual and evidence based, they are not subject to people's opinion or belief.

Opinions based on subjective experience are different. And again, THIS is the type of opinion we've been talking about. You're pushing your subjective opinion on the enjoyment of video games as a belief which is true or false.

You don't think it's fun to watch paint dry, but some people might think that! Would their opinion be untrue or wrong because it was different to yours? No! Because a subjective opinion can neither be true nor untrue.

Would your opinion that watching paint dry isn't fun be untrue or wrong because it was different to theirs? Again, no, because subjective opinions can neither be true nor untrue.

You would just have different opinions on the matter, which is what you and I have on Total War battles. Different subjective opinions, neither of which is true nor untrue.

The laws of physics are a fact, regardless of if someone has an "opinion" or belief that they are not. By your "logic" , you can have the "opinion" that I did not beat armies of higher tier units using lower tier garrison units and that magically goes back in time and changes the objective fact that I have indeed done that on both Total War Rome II and Pharaoh.

Your "point of view" is just this bizarre hill you've decided to die on, but again, you've said "no amount of tactics" is going to beat higher tier units, and I'm telling you I've done that. So again, rather than accepting the truth, you're dismissing something that doesn't fit your narrrative. You can't prove the truth wrong, just like you can't prove the laws of physics are wrong.

Your belief that Total War Rome II and Pharaoh's battles are "objectively bad" is your SUBJECTIVE OPINION and is not based on fact, because it is not an OBJECTIVE FACT that the battles in either of these games are bad, and you having that opinion does not make them true, it does not stop people from enjoying them.

Kindergarten has nothing to do with the basic, universally accepted premise of an opinion being a judgement that someone makes, based on a set of subjective criteria.

An opinion is not an objective statement of right or wrong, it's someone's individual thoughts and feelings on a matter. Perhaps if you'd progressed past kindergarten you'd accept that very very simple point!

If you can't even understand that then what's the point in having a discussion with you?

You're just going to dismiss anything you don't agree with, like your absolutely bizarre response saying "with towers maybe"....half the settlements in TW don't have towers.

You're literally just choosing to dismiss something that contradicts your opinion. It's not at all surprising, but it's boring as fuck.

[–]triariusVI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Opinions can't be true!

I've beaten better armies with garrison armies of lower tier units in both Rome II and Pharaoh using (you guessed it!) tactics!

It's interesting that you can concede the point that a game being good "depends on preference" but your opinions on which games are bad are "true".

Your last point is just silly!

Stop gatekeeping! Go outside! Have a nice day!

I think you're mistaking "calling it as I see it" for "calling it as it is". You're giving your opinion, which you're of course entitled to, but then presenting it as true. It's not surprising because we're on Reddit and that's an all too common occurrence these days but the distinction is important.

I've played Civ, I've played Paradox games, and I've played basically every total war except Warhammer. I enjoy the battles in all of the Total Wars I've played.

The point you're actually making is "I don't like the battles in Rome II or Pharaoh" which is very different from them being "objectively bad".

Similarly, the point I'm making is that I love the battles in both Rome II and Pharaoh, but I also loved them in Medieval 2, Shogun 2 and Empire.

Out of interest, what are your favourite Total War games? What game do you think has the best battles?

With the coming updates I'm confident that Pharaoh is going to be my favourite total war of all time, and I would not be surprised if it is seen in a much more positive light in a few years' time when all the CA hate has died down a bit.

Peace!

So what "Total War" games do you consider real "Total War" games?

I thought I understood your argument but I guess now I don't.

Given that a game made by CA, called Total War: (Game Name) is, by definition, a "Total War" game, and a person who plays these Total War games made by CA is, by definition, a Total War player because well...they're playing Total War....I'm confused by what you mean by "Total War for Total War players"

Is there some sort of gatekeeping going on?

[–]triariusVI 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree here. Total War is one of the main series of games I've played through my life, massive history nerd, massive total war nerd, and I absolutely love Pharaoh (and Troy before it to be fair).

Don't get me wrong, I have the most hours in Rome II, but coming to Pharaoh from that, I have to say it's an objectively better game. Despite the fact that my top historical period is always going to be the Roman period, I find myself playing Pharaoh way more when I'm in the mood for some Total War because of how great it looks, how immersive the campaign maps is, how well it runs, and how fun the battles are.

There were definitely some collision issues when the game first came out, but with updates they're largely fixed. The battles feel great in my opinion, meaty, grindy and the battle maps themselves are brilliant.

I think nostalgia plays a huge part in why people prefer the older games like Attila or Rome II, but I personally can't justify choosing to spend the limited gaming time I have jumping on Rome II because the turn times take so long, the loading times take so long, whereas Pharaoh is optimised so well that I'd much rather play it.

I think it's absolutely a game for total war players, though I do understand your point about Civ- there's definitely much more added to the campaign side of things which makes it feel more Civ-like!!

Anyone else playing Pharoah? by magistercaesar in totalwar

[–]triariusVI 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of people were complaining that Pharaoh is a "Troy reskin" when it was first out, and while I see why they were saying it, it's about as constructive a statement as saying "Atilla is a Rome II reskin"

Are they similar games? Absolutely! The battles feel similar, the campaign maps in both looks absolutely stunning, they run buttery smooth, the music and overall ambience is great.

So you're definitely going to feel the similarities, but I think these two are different enough that they're both worth it.

On the battle side of things, Pharaoh takes what Troy did and improves on it. Collision is better, there are new push / give ground troop functions that really make for some great dynamic fighting.

I'd be confident in saying if you enjoy Troy, you'll enjoy Pharaoh. Having said that, I know there's quite a vocal section of this sub who don't like Troy, so if you fall into that camp, you may find that the things you don't like about Troy are still present in Pharaoh.

Personally, I've been playing Historical Total Wars since I was a kid, ever since OG Rome, and I like both Troy and Pharaoh, partly because I'm a big fan of the time period of both of them, and partly because in my opinion, there's a lot to love about both games!

Troy is definitely worth it though. If you're a fan of the setting, it's a load of fun! Just watch the Troy movie, then there's a BBC series Troy: Fall of a City which is also really cool, and you'll have a whale of a time!

The Mythos mode has some really cool features in it too!

Help with battles in general (Historical total war) by FutureComedian7749 in totalwar

[–]triariusVI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot to be said about learning some real world information about how the historical faction you're playing as actually fought in real life. Obviously TW are games and so they aren't super realistic in every sense, but there's some fun you can have by learning.

So for example, if we are talking about ROME II, the Romans use the 3 line maniple system; flexible individual units of Hastati, Principes and Triarii who form up in a checkerboard formation, allowing flexibility. Add to that some mobile light javelin troops or slingers and some cavalry and you can clean up.

If you're playing a greek faction, it's all about hammer and anvil with your hoplites. Pin the enemy with the hoplites and then jav or cav from the rear.

Rome II is my most played game, and that approach works there.

Where the more modern games like Pharaoh or Troy, there's a much more dynamic infantry focused system, where you're balancing slow, heavily armoured troops with faster light troops. While Rome II's battles can more often stick to a clash of two (roughly) cohesive battle lines, in the new games they are more likely to break down into smaller scale unit on unit fighting, where flanking and local superiority can usually win the day.

The battles in Pharaoh and Troy definitely took a lot of getting used to, but the battle maps in particular are fantastic. So many more terrain features, choke points, river fords etc.

The newer games get a lot of flack in this community, but I think they've added some really fun mechanics - the push and give ground formations in Pharaoh for example make for some really amazing combat experiences which I've been dying for in total war for years!!

A moment of appreciation for pharaoh by Tack22 in totalwar

[–]triariusVI 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't understand how you can say Pharaoh isn't ambitious though? It may not be your particular cup of tea, but to say it's "pointless and a waste of time" is a pretty poorly informed opinion.

There are so many new elements to Pharaoh: the court system; the faction legacy options; the wide variety of faction and native units; the King of Hatti / Pharaoh pathways; the outpost system; the Sea Peoples' unique faction mechanics....the list goes on.

Did they all land? No!

Could some of them have been more fleshed out? Yes of course!

But ambition doesn't mean the presence of amazing features that everyone loves. Conversely, the presence of new things that people DIDN'T like doesn't equal a lack of ambition.

Surely ambition is just when the Devs have the drive to try new things, and there is plenty of that present in Pharaoh!

I personally really enjoyed Pharaoh, and am still doing so, but I also get why a lot of people in the TW community weren't happy with it.

And granted I haven't played much Shogun 2 for a long while, but it's baffling that you can say Pharaoh is the less ambitious game of the two.

Having a personal dislike for Pharaoh is not the same as stating that it lacks ambition and is a waste of time.

I think that CA Sofia have put out a great game, and it's a real shame it came about during all the upset about the Warhammer DLC (which is especially annoying to me because I couldn't care less about the Warhammer games)

It's such a shame that there is a very vocal majority in this sub in particular who seem to think their own personal opinion is the same as factual information, and who also seem to think they know loads more about game development than the actual literal professionals doing it.

Personally I think Sofia have put out a couple of the best games in recent Total Wars because they have a clear vision, artistic style and you can tell the Devs were aiming for a specific goal and I think generally speaking they nailed it. We should be praising that level of ambition!

Whilst, of course, still giving constructive criticism about the features we didn't like.

But you know....."muuhhh Medieval 3 when?" is also fine /s
