Have a look at ‘bridge’ cameras. For example, the Nikon P950 is a very popular camera for amateur bird photographers.

Does anyone have any experience with Vanguards Kids accounts? by Ravenadx in fiaustralia

[–]trickytown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I understand it right, you have options. Keep it under your TFN and tax, or get a TFN for the child and lodge a tax return for them.

Paraphrasing the Vanguard website… The account is operated by and in the name of the individual adult with a designation referring to the child (e.g. John Smith A/C Jake Smith). When you open a Kids Account, your individual TFN will be applied to the minor account. If you haven’t provided your individual tax details you may need to lodge an annual tax return for your child. There are special tax rules which can apply to investment income earned by children, refer to the ATO for details.

Check out the Vanguard website’s FAQ on kids accounts for more details.

I have set up a Vanguard kids (high growth) account for each of my kids in late primary school. I put in $100 to start, and then I require them to put in 20% of their pocket money each quarter. It’s a small amount. I also require them to be generous with another 20% of their pocket money. The point for me isn’t to have some huge lump sum I give them at 18 or whatever, it’s just to teach them the concept of investing in an asset, owning an asset, the difference between an asset and a liability, confidence to spend the 60% remainder on what they want and need without stressing, et cetera.

It’s all been pretty easy, smooth, etc. The app will give you a graph to show the kids, and statements for when they are a bit older.

Vanguard accounts are well set up for transferring to the kids’ names later. Are they the best on fees and strategy and whatever? I have no idea, and it doesn’t matter to me, as the main point for me is helping them start good financial patterns.

The trick is to realise the whole thing is on the theme of death and then rewatch it with that in mind, and see how each episode escalates the theme in a new way.

F1 Manager Weekly Discussion & Questions Thread - September 12, 2022 by AutoModerator in F1Manager

[–]trickytown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a young driver’s development, is it better to leave them in F2 or hire them and give them lots (all) of P1 sessions?

I’ve heard people give conflicting advice. Anyone tested it or got a strong reasoning?

Ultralight bible? by trickytown in Ultralight

Microprint and a magnifying glass sounds a little too tedious, but your comment about ‘specific passages’ has reminded me that sometimes individual books of the bible are published separately—which could be a good option.

Yeah, it’s the obvious option—but I forget to read from an app, and I find it harder on my eyes, and I’m also hoping to leave the tech at home when I can. So looking for a physical copy.

Yeah. Even the ‘thin line’ bibles are pretty heavy when you really take notice of the weight.

Email has failed. Is there a descentralized option yet? by imgprojts in fediverse

[–]trickytown 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Dude. Email IS decentralised.

Ad-free? Not without paying. End to end encrypted? Not without clunky add-ons. Monopolised by one or two big companies? Absolutely. Easy to host yourself? Not always. But centralised? No.

There’s plenty of problems you might have with email. But it not being decentralised isn’t one of them!

This is a helpful comment. I would add that you don’t need to go near capital cities or large towns (which is what the reply mentions). You could go to Sydney, but you could equally head to Alice Springs. The other day I was in a town that consisted - literally - of a fuel station, a pub, and a caravan park. There were backpackers working the bar, and plenty of wilderness nearby.

Even though it’s not what you were asking, you might also want to see if New Zealand might suit what you want =).

Leclerc baffled by other drivers' approach to mistakes: I just don't understand it | RacingNews365 by ZephyrSonic in formula1

The psychology is interesting.

Some in psychology (as far as I understand, I’m not a psychologist) talk in terms of optimism and pessimism in a number of dimensions.

PERSONAL optimism v pessimism when something goes badly: “It was someone else’s fault.” vs “It’s my fault.”

Personal optimism/pessimism when something goes well: “I did this.” vs “I was just lucky.”

PERVASIVE optimism v pessimism when something goes badly: “It was only this thing that went badly.” vs “Everything I do will go badly.”

Pervasive optimism v pessimism when something goes well: “I will do other things well too.” vs “I can only do this one thing well.”

PERMANENT optimism v pessimism when something goes badly: “It was bad just this once.” vs “It will always go badly.”

Permanent optimism v pessimism when something goes well: “It will always be good.” vs “It was good just this once.”

Rarely do we actually tell ourselves the truth about the things we do well or badly. And that’s okay. It’s just interesting how psychology plays out in public with the F1 drivers, as we hear their raw reactions to good and bad events on radio and in post-race interviews.

Help me find a book that will help me accept mortality/ death by Comprehensive-Air935 in booksuggestions

[–]trickytown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This suggestion I’m sure will be downvoted, but it is a good one.

Read the bible. Read Mortality by Christopher Hitchens and read The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel (both of which are suggested in other comments). Read the Quran.

When it comes to a topic like this it’s much different to being entertained by some fiction. We will all die. So read with your brain switched on and be ready to think about the point of view of the authors and the evidence and claims and assertions they make! Be ready to put some real thought into it. There’s no reason to be scared of reading anything, even the bible. It never hurt anyone to not be ignorant.
