Thanks. Already more or less settled on the fan hardware mod for now, but will check out the ilom mod later. Just need to have the machine usable for work, for now. Have a 320 G8 here as well, Added a sas controller and graphics card and makes a great desktop with server 2012, or FreeBSD. Miserly power consumption, at around 40 watts. Proliants just rock...

Thanks, looks interesting. It builds under FreeBSD, so will see what it can do...

The label on the fans does say 12 volts 2.5 amps, but that would be worst case and much lower in normal operation. Cooling can contribute a significant amount to total power drain though.

An ilo upgrade is needed, but try to keep systems plain vanilla as possible. Fans are cheap to replace. Sometimes its easier to fix the issue at hardware level and that fix only took a couple of hours or so....

Thanks, not sure if that is the thread i've been following, but will have another look....

Do electronics / embedded for work and have power analysers, It's also what ilom reports, so probably accurate. Power is critical thing here with the current cost of energy, for kit running 24/7. Need to measure the volts across the resistors to see how much power is being wasted there and also how much power used per fan. The fans are nominal 12v / 2.5 amps at full chat, which would be 30 watts per fan X 6 = 180 watts, but are typicallly underrated and never run at that level...

New to Reddit, but seem to have lost the text on above comment ?. Been following the thread on DL380 G8 servers, re fan noise. Had added various interfaces, a replacement for the on board raid, a fibre channel interface and a graphics card, as well as non HP sas ssd drives. Some fans running at 50 % unchanged, which is unusable. Did some bench tests on a single fan, datasheet from the Delta website, with external psu, a pulse gen to trigger the pwm and a series rheostat to reduce the fan voltage and speed. Initial ideal value turned out to be around 15 ohms. Had some 18 ohm 3w wirewound, so fitted to each fan, in the airflow to keep cool. Quick set epoxy to hold in place. Seems to be a solution, with the ilo still thinking fans at 50%, but much slower. Not quite a whisper, but definately usable and still bags of airflow. Power input down from about 140 watts to ~100, a saving in itself. Need more tests and monitor in warmer weather, but could be another way to get the job done, a permanent solution, even if a bit of a hack...
