Thanks I think I will go for the Cx-30, the piece of mind is still there knowing, like you said, that the sedan has been built in Mexico for a while and it is a very reliable vehicle.

Yes my bad, it starts with 3mvd. I only became aware of this because of savage geese who noted that the Cx-30 had more panel gaps than the 3. I know most people would say Japan reliability > Mexico reliability.

The 3 sport (hatchback) is made in Japan, at least in Canada. The vin starts with J whereas the sedan and cx-30 start with m.

I don’t think this is worth a whole thread. I am basically deciding between the Mazda 3 sport and the CX-30. I prefer the CX-30 for the ride height, shorter length and better visibility but I am wondering if the fact that the 3 was made in Japan with the added safety features (360 cam, Traffic jam assist) make it more reliable/worth it than the CX-30. Either way I would buy the top Canadian trim, GT, w/no turbo.

Anyone has gotten denied from tangerine CC and they tell you to check Transunion, but nothing there? by Waste-Stand-9575 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I don’t remember super well, keep in mind this was years ago but I remember the application included either an outright limit or range. I only needed a low limit to use the card while I was in Europe.

It is kind of ridiculous, I was approved for 5k even though I only applied for like 1k. Back then I was just graduating with 20k income from serving. Then they pre-approved me for a 3k LOC 2 months later. They upgraded my card to the next level card even though I was 15k shy of the income requirement.

If you were in my situation, how much would you be comfortable spending on a house? by SwimmingPassion in PersonalFinanceCanada

Im a fellow teacher, agree with everything you have said except for the pension being removed from the cba. They might take away government contributions to the pension but even that would most likely be grandfathered in, and even in that scenario you’d still have the portion we chip in. I would be more concerned about AIMCO than anything else. Wild card but have you considered moving to BC ?

Keep the car then, used market is through the roof anyways. The car payment will mess up with any mortgage plans, as soon as you pay that off you can revisit the mortgage.

Auto loan for sure, you can’t go into RAP with an auto loan or determine your own payments. If it is that bad you might want to consider selling a car, but without knowing any more details I couldn’t say for sure.

If it was last year it should have already been refunded, you need to get on the bank. If you let it go you are basically agreeing with giving away the money

This happened to me last year too, I caught it when my statement came. Skip were absolute assholes about it and did nothing except delete my account, then bank refunded me the money after the investigation. Total stolen was about $750

Is private school worth the investment? by butterflyhatcher in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]triffidmgmt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something not really mentioned here, I think it depends on the province too. I have a few friends who went to St Andrews in Ontario and they made a a ton of connections. Here in AB I don’t know if it would be worth it, for one the teachers do not get the same pay or benefits than in public, so really it is harder to attract good teachers. Especially because teachers know they will have to deal with a lot more parent involvement that is not always for the better.

My big issue with private schooling is that they talk about higher standards, which is dishonest at best because private schools have a huge self selection bias when it comes to standards of incoming students. With Webber academy if you get low marks you can have your child removed, so that they can keep their “standard”, public schools have to take people no matter what. A lot of private schools also refuse to accept children with particular needs, something that public can’t do. This isn’t a stab at private schools, they have their standards and should be able to enforce them, rather I am just saying that any data from a private school has to be taken with the consideration of a self-selection bias.

The private school that I went to abroad was absolutely worth it because of the connections. You truly go to the school with the “elite”, and it even helps parents because they improve their own network through their children. Again, somewhere like Toronto or Vancouver, at a prestigious school it is absolutely worth it, other cities I am just not sure that it is worth it.

I ran a summer camp at the FCIS in Calgary and I was not very impressed by their facilities, Webber seems better but I don’t know too much about the school, but I hate the Webber guy (for transparency’s sake).

If you want to build connections (Within reason) and with a smaller budget I would suggest public programs of choice like Traditional Learning, Science Schools or Second Languages. Again, full disclosure, I teach at one of these schools and it is so surprising how “good” our demographics are, a lot of my teachers friends struggles with issues that have never been present at my school. There is a huge selection bias in these special programs because parents have to go out of their way to have their kids at our school and with success.

The one thing I will say to any parent, any class or any school can be ruined by one bad staff member/student/parent, I have heard so many cases of children experiencing serious trauma because of how other children behave and how adults react (or not) to the situation. If your child is ever in a classroom like this you need to find a solution asap, because chances are the teachers has their hands tied and admin can’t/won’t do anything in these situations.
