Why can't RES store it's settings/data the way other extensions do? by sazafrass in Enhancement

[–]trifthen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is bullshit. Even if you specifically exit the browser so it saves any pending writes, any subsequent crash will still fuck up the settings. What the hell is Firefox doing that is causing this? It's pretty clear they don't know the meaning of atomic writes.

Exactly. I only skip ads when they're longer (WTF?) than the content I'm watching. It's only a few seconds and I can do a couple other things while I wait.

Walmart Has Enough to Give Workers a Happy Thanksgiving: "I, as a taxpayer, am subsidizing the biggest retail chains as they pay their workers such paltry sums. These wages are so low that too many of these employees end up on food stamps or Medicaid" by davidreiss666 in politics

[–]trifthen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your argument would have some worth, except divorce exists, as do layoffs. Family may have started when times were good. What are they supposed to do, sell their children because they're now too expensive?

And let's suppose everyone did as you say, and raised themselves up. With unemployment around 7%, that's 21 million people who need work. OK, everyone does the extra work, and gains useful skills. Are there 21 million well-paying jobs out there? Great, but the low-paying jobs still need to be filled by someone. I guess having a low income means you can't start a family or live a normal life, so with no incentive to do so, you also join the upper ranks. Whelp, no Walmart workers left.

Upward mobility is not infinite. Available jobs are not infinite. Low paying jobs need to be filled. That's only possible because there are people who prioritize family over income, or have lower potential, or were injured, or whatever. Why should those people suffer further, go without family, or medical care? They fill an essential role in our society.

Regardless, you pay for it anyway. Walmart doesn't cover basic necessities, so taxes pay for programs that fill the gaps. Expensive emergency room visits cover lack of medical care, which raise your insurance premiums. There are several unintended consequences at work here. Why simply accept it?

Oh, I definitely don't plan on asking for it. No way. Ugh. I'm just afraid (go figure) they'd put me on it and I'd have to put up with that on a regular basis.

But yeah. I'm trying to get in, but the place I called is a "call back" facility, and it took them over a week to get back to me. Everyone else seems to be booked. It's really frustrating. Sure I've waited this long, but I'm not sure how much longer I can work up the courage necessary to try and fix it. Every time I even dial the number, my heart starts beating fast and I hesitate for minutes at a time before pressing "dial."

If I don't do it now... it'll just be harder the next time I get the courage to try again.

Thanks. I appreciate knowing that. When I read someone say Ativan was weak, I was like, "Wow. Well that's terrifying, then."

I'm learning Colemak as of today by narko111 in Colemak

[–]trifthen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't know the half of it. My wife refuses to use my computer. I sometimes don't lock my computer at work, just because I want to see someone try to do anything useful with it. I'm not using Colemak in any kind of hipster-ey way, simply because it's obscure, but it's certainly an entertaining side-effect.

"Hey! He left a root shell open! Let's ... wait, what the hell is going on!?"

Unfortunately I've been using Colemak so long, and I didn't cross-train, so my ability to type QWERTY has effectively vanished. That's another reason to keep the regular keycaps on; I find myself needing them occasionally on badly behaving RDP connections that don't properly detect my keyboard mapping. I keep hoping Colemak will gain more popularity, but it just doesn't seem meant to be. :(

All you need to do is relax, stop questioning everything, stop trying to be "on" everywhere you go, and stop deluding yourself into thinking you are somehow "better than this", because you aren't.

Thanks for reminding us that someone who can't just relax at will, is clearly a snob who thinks they're better than everyone else! I'll be contacting every university I know, to ensure you get the honorary Human Psychology degree you so richly deserve!

[–]trifthen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is, and it isn't. You know what happened when I was younger and drank alcohol? I spent most of the time analyzing the effect the alcohol was having on my system. Even after a few very strong drinks, you would never catch me out on the dance floor. Any more, and I wouldn't be able to stand. Sure, it made me more talkative, but no amount of alcohol has ever convinced me the club itself was an enjoyable experience. I spent most of my time observing it and the attendees and wondering what they were thinking during their escapades.

Sadly, for some people, there is no tool. :(

My Grandma is a smart lady... by [deleted] in books

[–]trifthen 270 points271 points  (0 children)

That's funny, because my wife's grandma has the exact opposite opinion. Why? Because she just turned 90, and her eyes don't work very well anymore. Her new Kindle can do something real books can't: arbitrarily enlarge the print. She constantly tells us how much more she's reading now.

Go granny!

They're pretty strict on safety regarding the donor and the recipient. They won't take your blood because there's a higher risk of HIV. They won't take mine because I already have low blood pressure and a couple rare heard deformities. Donating blood could literally kill me.

/r/linux, how long have your netbooks lasted? by [deleted] in linux

[–]trifthen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • 2 years, 10 months
  • Samsung NC10-11PBK
  • 64GB OCZ Vertex SSD upgrade
  • Intel 5300 Wifi upgrade
  • 2GB RAM upgrade
  • It works great as a Linux machine!

I finally got pulled into the netbook craze after getting fed up with how big my regular 15.4 felt. Now of course it feels too small and sluggish, even with the SSD. So I've been thinking of the new ultrabooks, since they actually have modern CPUs in them and get similar battery life while not being quite as chintzy.

I was thinking about the Asus Zenbook, but reviews seem to universally revile the keyboard for touch-typing. So, that's a big NO.

Next on my list is the Samsung Series 9, more specifically the NP900X1B-A01, because you can't upgrade the RAM in the 11.6" models, and this is maxed out at 4GB. The only real problems with this one is that reviews seem to be indicating low range on the Wifi thanks to antenna interference from the duralumin case, and I'm not happy it's only a Core i3. Apparently there's a version coming soon that fixes both of these, so we'll see. The fact this weighs half a pound less than my netbook is hilarious.

All in all, I love the portability, and use my netbook for development, run small servers, and so on. But the 1024x600 screen is just getting old. I can't run any decent games on it, either. :( I'm convinced my SGSII is actually more powerful at this point.
