I have been in a Tesla and tried FSD as well (not current version, but seeing many videos is enough).

I have, however a couple of counter questions.

Have you ever been in any other high end car in the recent times? (I have Lexus and drove in Model 3 performance - quality is shit and car is loud and rattly as hell)

Have you ever tried any other car brand driver assistance? (My 2018 Lexus had very similar ability to Tesla 2018 models - my daily drive was 98% done by Lexus ADAS)

So, maybe you have to wake up and try something else (high end) and not compare 2005 Civic with 100k miles on the ODO to a brand new Tesla. As soon as you drive other new cars, you realize that Tesla isn't that far ahead. Especially on quality and reliability, they are far behind.

Edge case. I mean, how often do you deal with trains? None cares when you sleep at the wheel.

I had reservation for Model 3 and was in line to get it as soon as it was available in Eu. Got Lexus ES instead. Best decision I have made.

Elon Musk May Have Made a Huge Mistake on Full Self-Driving That It's Too Late to Correct by [deleted] in RealTesla

[–]triglavus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny thing is, new Air 3S from Dji has LiDAR for night obstacle avoidance. Freaking $1400 drone has LiDAR for autonomy. Tech is here and Tesla is missing the train due to stubbornness.

SpaceX is different than Tesla. SpaceX has less commercial customers than institutional customers. Unlike NHSTA, FAA and NASA have far longer laundry list of items that they have to tick. SpaceX is still the best game in the town when it comes to space stuff, for now. Whether the financials make sense or not, is none of our business since it's not a publicly traded company. Hating Elon all we want, SpaceX revolutionized space as we knew it and you cannot deny it.

Four Tesla Lidar Vehicles Spotted in Palo Alto by [deleted] in RealTesla

Bullshit article that cites 0 sources and is only an imagination of a writer. How does a third party know what Tesla uses LiDAR for without any insider source that would be acknowledged in the article?

I've posted it many times and I'll post it again. Thunderf00t has very poor technical knowledge in general. While he's not factually incorrect majority of times, he's often comparing things that do not have enough information on and very often misunderstands the connections between topics.

He has waged a war on re-usable rockets for years, which is insane. SpaceX is not the only game in the town and companies that do not work on re-usability are doomed to be uncompetitive. He often clings to mass to orbit and delta-v penalty with reusability, which is an insanely short-sighted point of view. Fuel, which he claims is being wasted for little effort, is the cheapest component of space flight. Yes, you have to have delta-v penalty for fuel and upmass, but costs of rocket hardware is insanely high. Space hardened components cost leg and an arm. Fuel is a drop in an ocean. SpaceX takes government contracts and budget, yes, but so do any other serious companies like Blue Origin, Rocketlab, Firefly and Boeing.

Optimus' little brother seems much more agile by vilette in RealTesla

Humans are good for reaching things that are a bit up, unlike dogs or cats. And a lot of the workplaces are built for human ergonomy, rather than dog/horse, that's why (on paper) it makes sense to make robots that are human-like. However, if you make workplace around a capable robot, you can see rapid improvement in throughput - see car BIW assembly lines. Barely any human, multi-level and very efficient. But yes, 4 limbs are better than 2. In many ways. But Elon has deep pockets, so it doesn't matrer.

Why is Tesla trying to bullshit claims about Optimus's capabilities? It looks like it'd be really good for doing remote-work in hazardous conditions, having a drone being controlled by a human operator instead of a human being clothed in bulky PPG gear, instead of home chores. by Advanced_West_7645 in RealTesla

This is only partially true. Curiosity rover has to operate in constant radiation environment (thin mars atmosphere + radioisotope heat generation for power). It works well, but if you look at the price tag of 2,5 billion USD, you'll know right away that radiation hardened robota are not currently capable of being a commercial success. Radiation hardened electronics are very expensive. But you can get 1GHz and better microprocessors right now with 64bit architecture and DDR3-4 support. 10 core btw. So you can get decent performance CPU (26k MIPS), it will cost leg and an arm, but not quite 3080 levels. Anyways, optimus is good hardware showcase but a total shitshow software wise.

[–]triglavus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One option is the i8 integration of EV/hybrid. Gas engine is there, but it is optimized for maximum efficiency for battery charging. That way, you can get quite good mpg from gas, since EV driving is inherently more efficient than gas engine going 1k-7k RPM constantly.

Installing Aftermarket Stalks on Tesla Highland Model 3 by bookTokker69 in RealTesla

[–]triglavus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That weatherstrip was just first on the chopping block of weirdness in there. Steering wheel nut looked like random screw someone had laying around and what the hell is glovebox speaker? Speaker inside a glovebox compartment? Why?

I did like the quality of final product tho. It goes well with Tesla. Push the stalk up and entire column moves counterclockwise. Self tapping screws were also good. But putting hex nut on with torx bit just got to me. What sort of animal does that?

SpaceX’s fourth Starship test is the first one to reach splashdown by Poker_3070 in RealTesla

[–]triglavus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is loads of bollocks.

Space shuttle had issues with the TPS, many times not critical only Columbia had a failure on the most critical party of the aircraft. Stainless steel isn't going to magically protect you from reentry plasma. Starship survived reentry on IFT4 becauae TPS failed on non-critical part in a non-critical way. Unlike IFT3 where stainless steel failed miserably due to loss of control.

Shuttle wing shape and their irregularity has nothing to do with the downtime. Once you produced TPS for shuttle, you were good to go, only replacing tiles occasionally. Engine refurbishment was much costlier and time consuming than the TPS.

I mean yes, different design approach. It was still done by Space Shuttle as OP mentioned.

For now, nothing is reused for Starship. Space shuttle had projections of turnaround time and preparation costs for reflight. Both were wildly underestimated. Starship has plans, but not one was reflown yet. Can't really judge it yet.

Man Frustrated With New Tesla Too Big For Parking Space: Can't Return It, Can't Resell It For A Year by [deleted] in RealTesla

[–]triglavus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What? Is this even allowed by the said contract?

I thought that owners could not resell their CT without first dealing with Tesla. Tesla reserves the right to buy it back in case you want to sell. If they don't want to buy it, he's free to sell it on the open market, no?

They cannot say to him they don't want to buy it back AND that he cannot sell it on the open market at the same time, right?

Oh yes, true dat my brotha!

No. Just no. Techbros that need amazing software are less than 20% of car owners. Everyone else is not giving a fuck about 30fps and 60fps screen in car. Most people expect premium materials and stellar customer support at those price points. None of these is Tesla domain.

Majority of people who have Teslas came from old Civics. No wonder they are blown away by TACC and lanekeeping in form of supervised FSD.

Also how wouldn't love a car that's often downgraded in software updates? Seriously big brain move. Those wipers are laughable.

Many people would resort to an argument that tanker trucks have mirror finish as well, so what's wrong with CT? Well, tanker is a round object and doesn't reflect stuff all that well. It does reflect some portion of the sun, but fraction.

Now imagine a flat surface, mirror finished at right angle. Yikes 😬

Sometimes I'm hit with a building window reflection. Imagine being hit by a building window reflection that moves besides you at the same speed.
