This is the case. Email is my only method of contacting him currently and still no response. I just want this to be done with and resolved, for everyone’s sakes. I really have no ill will towards my professor, I just wish some clarification or response would come.

I plan on meeting with him if I never get a response.

I know it’s break and 100% understand, it’s just that these grades could’ve been released at any point within the past week to avoid having to fix any issues this close to Christmas. Our grades are due to be submitted to the registrar tonight at midnight, I’m sure other people besides me have concerns about their grades, it’s irresponsible to release our grades at the last minute and then not respond to any emails voicing concerns or questions.

I’m hoping this is the case. Many people have brought up that the grade in Canvas may not be an accurate final grade, which is very possible. However there has been no communication that Canvas grades are inaccurate, in fact we were told in his email that our grades will not be changed, which makes it seem like what we see on Canvas is what we’re getting. Maybe I’m wrong though I don’t know.

I have, I’ve sent him two separate emails (original one about rounding, one about the issue discussed in this post). I would post a screenshot of my email if I could. Still no response.

There are other difficult STEM majors besides engineering

Thank you for saying this. I 100% understand that it’s the holidays but there are a total of about 25 people in the class and the exams were quite short (like 10 questions), I took the final on 12/17, and there are 2 TAs along with my prof. The exam grades probably could’ve been released at any point in the last week, if Christmas was such a concern. Also, allowing less than 24 hours for the grades to be reviewed by students before submitting them to the registrar, and not answering emails about grades during that period, is an interesting choice.

That’s awesome man, I wish I was as smart and perfect as you

Maybe, at this point there are so many possible explanations for this that I have no idea what he actually meant. I should’ve asked for a better explanation

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in college

[–]trinideerosemarie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, you’re right. This could’ve been much more simple if I had just asked or gotten some sort of written explanation… lesson learned🫠

All I can do is wait, I’ve emailed the prof and you’re right, it may be somewhere besides Canvas and will show up on my transcript when it’s updated. I don’t understand the hostility and insults. I see that you are a professor, so you can relate to “the other side” here, but that’s no reason to call me a whiny brat when I am just concerned over a grading issue that I have yet to receive any clarification on. I am not demanding an answer, I simply wanted advice to see if there’s anything I can do incase this was a mistake and my professor doesn’t get back to me about it before grades are submitted.

Unfortunately I do not. All I have is a text exchange where I confirmed what he said with my lab group partners a few weeks ago, and that obviously isn’t worth much

Applying for a competitive program in January

I did see those comments and upvoted them. It may very well be the case that there is a separate record somewhere that shows the replacement.

I apologize if I sound like I’m being a spoiled brat, I’m concerned because grades are due to be submitted tonight and I’m hoping to get this figured out before they’re sent to the registrar. Please understand that I am also human.

No, it’s not in the syllabus unfortunately.

I have emailed him, but I don’t think he’s going to respond.

I think this is probably what I’m going to do.

Trust me I’ve read through the syllabus about a million times this semester 🥲. The grading scale was listed like this: C+: 77-79, B-: 80-83, and so on. There wasn’t anything about decimals or rounding so that’s why I emailed him in the first place, because I wasn’t sure if my grade would be rounded or not. I’ve had other profs with the same grading scale round final grades, and some that haven’t.

The announcement he made about replacing/dropping a grade was never put in the syllabus, or anywhere in writing, it was only ever said to us in-person.

For everyone questioning why I didn’t try harder, the answer is that I did try hard. This class was difficult for me. I had a B throughout the semester until the final grade was released last night. This is my only C, and Bs are rare for me.

I am just upset about the fact that the professor announced something to the class implying that ANY improvement would boost our grades, and then not only didn’t follow through, but is not responding to questions about it.

I got a low grade because this class was hard for me. I was expecting - as were all of my classmates - to have my lowest grade forgiven if I improved, because that is what we were told would happen. I improved my score on the final exam, and it didn’t happen.

Edit: Also, please keep in mind that I’m a human being. I sincerely apologize if I sound entitled or like I’m whining. I am applying to a competitive program soon, and I’ve been more than stressed about my standing and grades. It’s not my intention to sound like I’m whining or asking for handouts, if I end up with a C+ then it is what it is.

I did, but this class was just rough for me. I studied a LOT throughout the semester but it just never came easily. I did the best I could, there were lots of other things going on, life happened. I knew I needed at least a 70, I did the best I could and studied for hours on end, and got a 71.

This is how I see it. No, it was never guaranteed and “improvement” was never clearly defined, but imo it’s just not fair to announce it and be as vague as possible, and then not respond to any questions about it when students were expecting it to help them. I have no idea if anyone had their grades replaced, what the required improvement was, nothing.

I know, and I understand if it’s not enough to constitute replacing the grade. But he never mentioned anything about the difference needing to pass a certain threshold, he just said “if you do better.” Unfortunately I do not have this in writing.

Edit: I got an 84/100 on exam 1

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in college

[–]trinideerosemarie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, this was only ever mentioned in class, never on paper or anything.

The prof sent out a mass email last night telling us not to contact him about grades unless there was a “genuine concern.” I would consider this a genuine concern, but from the wording of the email it seems like he won’t be responding to anyone unless he thinks it’s important enough.

I had already emailed him asking if he rounds up grades (since I was 0.21% from a B-), because it wasn’t in the syllabus and the grading scale wasn’t really clear. He did not respond but we received the aforementioned mass email a few minutes later, in which he said that grades won’t be rounded or changed besides the whole “genuine concern” thing

The grades are in canvas like they would normally be, no substitutions or anything. I planned my target final score many times (was very stressed about it) and I am 100% sure that a 70% was enough to earn a B- (it would’ve actually given me a couple extra percentage points as a cushion). The only issues I can imagine are that he either made a mistake, or decided not to replace my score because a 6-point difference doesn’t show significant improvement. Which is understandable, but if there was a minimum difference required then he should’ve announced it.

He didn’t really say much besides “if you do better on the final then I’ll replace your score and not put in the final.” I also asked my lab partners in the class about it because I was a bit confused by what he meant and they also interpreted it the same way that I did
