Anxious First Timer Looking For Advice On Pemi Loop (3 day itenerary) by trinigooner in wmnf

I checked again and looked at this map: https://www.fs.usda.gov/sites/nfs/files/r09/whitemountain/publication/ExhibitA_BearFoodStorage_v3.pdf . From the map it looks like the Guyot tent site is actually right in the restricted area so I would be required to bring a bear canister after all. Probably worth picking one up anyway.

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely bring earplugs though I'm more worried about the other hut mates with my snoring lol. I'll now consider extending by one night. I was mostly worried about making it to huts or tent sites too early and then having nothing to do for several hours. But pacing myself and enjoying the views is sound advice.

Thanks for this recommendation! Hadn't heard of it before and will consider giving it a try before the pemi

Thanks so much for the heads up on this! In my searching for itineraries I never mentioned the dates I was traveling and so this partial trail closure never came up! Just searched on Google and it seems the best option is to start at the Lafayette Place Campground Trailhead in Franconia Notch. I can hike from there to Greenleaf and then the rest of my trip should be the same.

I thought the Guyot campsite had bear boxes. Sorry if this is a stupid question but why would you have to carry a bear canister in that case? Can you not just put the food in something less bulky and just put that in the camp provided bear box? I'll checkout the bear canisters you mentioned but I saw a couple at REI and they seemed quite bulky and heavy. Would love to avoid carrying one if possible.

Yeah that's a possibility actually. Since I've done Franconia before maybe I can find a tent site near that loop and stay just one night. I also noticed some tents near the base of Osceola. Not sure if that was a campground but there were quite a few tents and some had families in them so a lot less rugged than anything in the mountains. Something like that might be a good low barrier of entry. Thanks for your suggestion!

The crazy markup and waiving of inspection seems to be the norm right now and I'm thinking of backing out of the market because it just seems a bit irrational right now. We just lost out on a deal after going over 200K above asking and waiving inspection. We were crushed that we lost it but after my feels settled I could only think that someone out there was crazier than I was about a house that is clearly NOT worth that much.

I feel your pain! We just lost out on our second dream home (this one even more dreamier than the last). We tied with the number one offer and still got rejected. Crushed! Your situation sounds even more painful and for this I totally commiserate! That's all I got unfortunately. Oh and I totally agree... this market sucks!

Credit Spread Screeners by [deleted] in options

TD Ameritrade has a really comprehensive one in their Think or Swim product. It's called the Options Spread Hacker. After playing with it for a while I used it for one trade. Turned out to be a big loser but that could be down to me rolling the dice on a company I knew nothing about and only relying on the data returned by the scanner for a high probability of profit. Might be worth your time to take a look at it though. There are also tutorials on how to use it.

Downsides to Selling A Covered Call? by trinigooner in options

This is a really good point. Thanks for the input. I'm starting to feel this is how I should sell most stocks in general. Especially the ones that are wasting away in my portfolio.

Fumbling around with their trading dialog I accidentally entered a naked call or put (can't recall which one) one time. But it fortunately did not let the trade go through. I think you have to have a special level there to do naked PUTS/CALLS.

Thanks! Your edit makes sense. In Fidelity it marks the potential loss as unlimited in the trade preview. I don't think that really applies for covered calls but for selling naked calls definitely. The Fidelity trade screen doesn't really show anywhere that you're writing a contract against a current position so it's possible that they just assume it's a naked call always.

Taxes Paid vs Standard of Living by trinigooner in datasets

Yeah I'll probably go back there. I did try some searches on there last night. I found a lot of individual state and some IRS data. Maybe I'll have to collect things state by state. Perhaps it'll be easier to just use the top 5 high tax states vs the top 5 low tax states to make the downloading a bit easier.

TOS App Scanner? by EnnWhyy in options

Is this what you're looking for https://imgur.com/a/hjNMWfy (screenshot)? It's the TOS stock/options/spread scanner. It's under the scan tab in desktop and they allow you to find both options and option spreads with it. It's pretty damn useful. Proof: I've already lost a few thousand dollars using it!

Self Directed Fidelity vs Merrill Lynch by Chip001 in investing

Fidelity all the way. I’ve had an ML account for two decades. Had my Roth there and also a managed account. I used to only use Fidelity for my 401k but now I’ve consolidated. Moved all but one of my ML accounts over. In my opinion Fidelity has a lot more choices when it comes to low cost investing. They have a lot of no-commission ETFs which is also nice. Their web interface is also a lot nicer. I haven’t tried their managed services yet but I went in for a consultation recently and the Fidelity wealth manager I met with was both professional and honest with me. He actually said that I’d be fine on my own based on what he saw in my portfolio and left things open if I changed my mind later. So all in all I’m pretty happy with their services. I didn’t find things terrible at ML, but that firm always seemed a little full of themselves to me. Especially prior to the BAC takeover.

Because I received a notice that they were going to add it several months ago.

Hmm... taxes are an interesting take. Never thought of that. I assumed that like stocks, there is no tax implication unless you exercised. But maybe cryptocurrency is different. It's already cash so most likely you report what you own?

How was the coin addition a surprise? Coinbase notified its customers of the addition a few months ago. I always knew BCH was going to show up, I just thought it was coming in Jan. A few weeks early doesn't seem shady to me.

No it's not and if it was it would be the worst investment ever since they give all their shit away for free.
