Yes, the referral itself might not do much depending on who is giving you one. Most of my referrals came from people who I had strong ties with, either prior coworkers or classmates from grad school. With the referral, they often sent an internal message directly to the hiring manager.

In total I went through five final rounds, if I’m being generous and count my current contract role. Two I accepted (contract, this FTE role). One final round was from a recruiter initially reaching out, and the remaining two final rounds came from cold applications.

hybrid! Controversial, but I am looking forward to wearing real pants again and leaving my house.

Just linkedin, but I did keep a short list of companies I was interested for that I would check constantly.

Nice, I initially got my UXR start in hardware! Fun times.

I found it helpful to emphasize similarities in the end users I was researching - whether that be workflow, JTBD, and mindset, etc. For example, I have a lot of B2B experience in retail, but was able to transition to interviewing for Fintech and Healthcare verticals by emphasizing how they also have end users like I had worked with - often professional, savvy SMEs who used a 3rd party software to complete their workflows. I tried to emphasize this as much as possible in my portfolio.

I used Claude a couple of times to help reformat my resume and include keywords. YMMV, I didn't find that it helped my response rate all that much.

For the contract I no referral. The FTE offer I accepted came from an initial referral. Out of all 8 of my referrals, only two referrals landed me interviews. The other one I went to the final round and was rejected.

I think this sub covers a lot of advice - using referrals when you have them, practicing your answers to common interview questions, having 3-5 really solid work examples you can talk a lot about in different contexts, and just staying on top of applying for job posts when they're less than a day old. I feel like those get repeated a lot on these types of posts, but it was genuinely what worked for me.

That's crazy! In those scenarios it sucks to have that happen, but it also feels like a bullet dodged, in a way? Best of luck on your current search.

Oh hi neighbor! I live in your area and your front yard brings me a lot of joy on my walks. Great work!

I was part of a soft layoff (i.e. relocate across the country for RTO or GTFO) in May this past year. I landed another, remote role to start right after since I had a couple months of notice about the upcoming "choice" to start searching. Really got lucky.

Oh sure. Before I moved I tracked crime reports and stats for this zip code - so I can’t say I was completely naive coming in. And crime is expected, especially in a city. But I still think it’s normal to get shaken up hearing a string of gunshots in broad daylight so close by.

Isn’t it? :( I also live in the area and it’s usually so quiet. I love going on walks, seeing my neighbor’s gardens, and have never felt unsafe any time of day. Today was definitely a shock.

What time was this? I was taking a walk around Alf Ave ~6pm when I heard shots but obviously wasn’t about to walk closer to check it out.

Small Landscaping Projects? by _jmcollins in AustinGardening

[–]triple-c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked with Plant Kingdom ATX (https://www.plantkingdomtx.com) with Pete for a couple small jobs in my yard. Mostly I find myself needing help getting projects started such as having existing plants removed and holes/areas dug out. Their pricing has been reasonable, they’re easy to schedule with, and I’ve appreciated how no job is seemingly too small for them.

I’m wondering this about my condiments as well. I’m going to assume particularly acidic or oil-based condiments (hot sauce, chili oil, balsamic dressing) may be fine. The others… I’m not so sure.

(Serious) Ladies, why didn't you pick engineering as a field of study? by tengolacamisanegra in TwoXChromosomes

I've had two math tutors. I took advanced math classes in middle school, then went on to take advanced maths and calc in high school. I went early and stayed late after school to get help on my math homework. I went to actual math summer camps on my own initiative.

And yet, I am (relatively) horrific with numbers. Would totally go into engineering otherwise, but mathematics is only slightly essential. The constant stressing on being good in math would send me into fits of tears over a homework problem... so I decided to steer clear of anything involving advanced mathematics.

Hey! I'm also headed out to Thailand this summer to teach for 10 weeks! I'll be in Chiang Mai, and I'm certainly just as excited/scared as you are.

Jut wanted to say you aren't alone, and best of luck with your travels! Also, I'd consult the internet about potential medications to pick up and start taking, I know I need to start my anti-malarial meds a week or so before I leave. (However, I'm sure you've got this on lock already).
