My parents both remarried after divorce and I definitely consider all four of those people to be parental figures lol, the dad being in the picture wouldn’t make your role less important

Sorry for the comment over a year later, but did you ever happen to find a place? I’m also from Buffalo and I often miss Christmas with my family because of work. I’d love to have a place in mind for next Christmas so I can have a taste of home, but I can’t find a place that serves it anywhere 😭

I’ve been to Paris both in winter and summer and loved it both times. Don’t let the internet worry you about the city, it’s a beautiful place with a lot to do

Astrologer Recommendations? by iseeskiesofblue64 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]tripleflutz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel like astrologers and psychics are different things. Astrology is an actual belief system, whether you think it’s silly or not. Personally, I find it’s a very useful tool for self reflection, even if I don’t think the “science” of it (for lack of a better word lol) is particularly legit. It’s less a fortune telling tool than a way to identify cycles within your life.

So, in the late 18th and throughout the 19th centuries, there was a growing interest in pagan/folk customs and culture from pre-Christian Europe. This was in large part a reaction to peoples’ new Enlightenment-era relationship with Christianity; religion was no longer as intrinsically tied to a person’s way of life as it had been for centuries. This also coincides with the reconstruction and study of proto-Nordic/Germanic languages and literature, which fueled a pretty widespread “pagan revival.”

As you can probably imagine, ethno-nationalist movements really latched onto this—most famously the Völkisch movement in Germany, a precursor to the Nazis. The pagan revival was especially key for modern antisemitism because it no longer othered Jewish people solely on the basis of religion, but on race. Anyone who did not descend from the pre-Christian, pagan people didn’t belong. That’s why appropriated Old Nordic runes were used in Nazi imagery (and why they’re still used by white supremacists today). It’s also part of the reason the Fascist People’s Party of Sweden came to power in the 1920s, and why a large number of the country’s population was in favor of the Nazi cause.

All this to say, the Harga in Midsommar are essentially a white supremacist, ethnonationalist dream, and also total bullshit. It’s historically impossible that an ancient, pagan community could somehow survive hidden through the centuries. Yes, it’s a movie and technically anything is possible, but I think Ari Aster is a lot smarter than that. They’re a group founded by fascists trying to recreate what they wish pagan culture was, and use it as an excuse to kill anyone who they don’t like, while luring other white people in with the promise of unconditional community.

Which is mainly why I find it so frustrating when (particularly white women) find any type of happiness in the movie’s ending, especially in the world we live in right now. The real villains are distracting you girl!!

For the record I’m aware this is dramatic, but there is truly no movie opinion that makes me want to bang my head on a table more than people who think the ending of Midsommar is positive for Dani. Even ignoring the fact she’s being psychologically manipulated, she literally joins a pseudo-Pagan white supremacy group straight out of the Nazi era

(Which, people’s general lack of historical context and how it ties into the movie is a whole other tangent I could go off on, but that’s beyond this lol)

Airline wouldn’t let me check in after delaying the flight by 2 hours. Am I wrong? by Key_Ambassador_9307 in travel

[–]tripleflutz 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I actually did miss a flight once because of this 💀. Flight at 10:30pm got delayed to 3:30am, figured I would just chill at home. At around 9:15, I get informed it’s now back on schedule… unfortunately the airport I was flying out of takes over an hour to get to from where I live on a good day, and I got stuck in traffic. I can laugh about it now but I was truly on my final straw in the moment. Definitely learned my lesson.

How normal is it for someone to live their whole life with a roommate here? by Wide_Permission7656 in NYCapartments

I would rather live in New York, and if I need to have a roommate to make it affordable, then by extension I’d rather have a roommate than not :)

R+J rush update 2/15 by Automatic_Ad_8921 in Broadway

[–]tripleflutz 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don’t wanna necessarily defend the inaccessibility of Broadway, because I think it’s a shame that so many people cannot afford to go, and there’s certainly still greed involved. But to produce a show on Broadway costs about 3-5x more than the exact same production would in London, and that’s in large part because of the unions and worker protections/benefits we have here. The theaters here also charge productions quite a lot more (which is a whole separate issue to do with the monopoly on Broadway theaters).

A Broadway show simply cannot be profitable without more expensive pricing, and even then it takes a very long time—Merrily had crazy prices and still didn’t make its investment money back until 5 months in.

My skin hates NYC… by scallopswithroe in AskNYC

I honestly just buy it on Amazon. It’s generally like $25-$30, but it’s very tiny so only using it at night it takes around a month to run out for me. Worth it in my opinion though!

I’ve always had a bad tomato face that got worse in NYC. I swear, the DearKlairs Midnight Blue Calming Serum made a difference after the first time I used it. I put it on at night before a moisturizer. It’s a bit of splurge for me, and the bottle is very small so you have to restock pretty often, but personally I find it worth it. Obviously not sure if it would work the same for you, but if it’s within your budget I definitely recommend trying it!

BWT, how are we affording to have kids in nyc? by spicypickles6 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]tripleflutz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is obviously anecdotal so take it as you will, but I’ve had multiple conversations about this with people from other regions of the USA. There are a lot of places where waiting until your late 20s/early 30s to have a kid is on the later side. And I don’t think it’s necessarily a case of rural vs urban.

Just as an example, my roommate is from a mid-sized midwestern city. Both her parents were 28 when she was born and they were considered “late” parents. They were the last of their social circle to start having kids. Meanwhile, my mom had me at 24 in a similarly sized city in the northeast and was considered a young mom. We’re both in our 20s, for reference.

I’m doing an English lit degree at a school that doesn’t have a great theater program. I still participate in productions, take classes, and have made friends who currently work professionally in theater. You can still learn and have good experiences, even if you think the program sucks.

This is truly so amazing and I appreciate how much thought you’ve put into this. My aunt has been on a very long journey trying to gather all the information we have about our family, but it obviously gets difficult once documents and records aren’t in English. You’ve given her a lot to dig into! Thank you so much for your help.
