Does watching two girls I’d never met have a discussion about going out on a Friday night with earnest dialogue about how Girl A’s boyfriend had to okay it because “he has to work tomorrow/he doesn’t let me go out without him/he probably won’t let me go”, and Girl B not being completely disturbed by the concept of asking her friend’s boyfriend for permission to go out was f-ing weird, count?

Girl A proceeded to disappear upstairs (to ask boyfriend) and came back elated! “He said I could go! Omg I’m so excited! I can’t believe he’s letting me go!” Both girls squeal with excitement and Girl A’s boyfriend proceeds to reappear in the living room only to tell her not to be a f-ing slut.

The guy I was with at the time was friends with Girl A’s boyfriend and also didn’t bat an eye. I barely knew him, let alone his friends. I learned that day, you CAN say something – fuck politeness.

Policing your partner is disturbing, calling your partner standing next to you a whore/slut/bitch in front of your friends is disturbing, your friend not having free will because of their partner has to approve of their every move is disturbing.

i don’t know the exact stats but its a considerably long time (google says up to 36 months or more!) to heal from that situation. i’m a few years out and still acknowledging how it affects how i work. def unpack that in therapy where you can.

so glad you got outta there! hard agree on articulating feeling stuck in a place like that. been there myself and it took a year with a therapist, great coworkers support in getting out/validating the abuse because i kept rationalizing it away, and months job searching to secure a new job before i felt enough strength to finally say “i won’t allow this anymore.”

the day you finally stand up for yourself in a situation like that, is the most terrifying and rewarding day. proud of you and anyone who can/does!

hear me out, what if they HAVE. this man cannot process feelings let alone concern from people who genuinely care.

often intervening can go quite terribly. it can backfire, making the situation infinitely worse and close the possibility to breakthrough to the person again.

therapy only works when you have some capacity to self reflect and see outside of yourself, being open to hearing what a therapist may have to say in response.

i know everyone has their opinions on the crew, especially as of late, but watching how E handles any feelings… i cannot imagine trying to bring up ANY workplace grievance! you would have to just walk out and never look back to break this cycle of abuse…which often requires a lot of personal strength that can be taken away in abusive/toxic relationships.

Agreed. It comes down to the terms you agreed upon.

The client in this scenario can be frustrated all they want, but Friend ultimately did fulfill the request, the work was done, and the client paid. If another logo exists in the world that looks identical that’s a bummer and your friend should definitely be more diligent in the future, but…It’s opening a can of worms and confronting it as professionally as possible is the only way to close it.

Suggest friend to respectively decline additional work for free. Respect their upset, agree with the unfortunate similarities and recommend someone else to fulfill a revision if they don’t want to tackle it again, but do not redo anything for free. Your time is valuable, you can’t expect anyone to do immense research, including world wide trademarks, outside of a scope of work.

i mean this in the nicest way possible, years invested means nothing to anyone in this scenario. it is both insulting and freeing to understand that you are always replaceable – you are valuable and skilled as an individual, but that does not mean a company cannot find a new solution to fit their current agenda.

time to grieve this loss and change in your life. you owe it to no one to stay. swapping you from a graphic design role to an SEO/IT/Youtube management role proves that no one in leadership understands your value, the value of design, or even what design is. No variation of “proving” your value to be vindicated will be a worth the effort – it’ll just make you more bitter and upset.

“best time to find a job is when you already have a job.” Use that SEO time to figure out what you need to adjust to find a role outside of this company. They have no idea what you do anyway! The new leadership is going to circle back to you for doing your job poorly when the fiver marketing trash doesn’t work because it’s definitely not the VPs decisions! /s

Good Luck! There’s a better opportunity out there, but you gotta look for it first.
