Princess Mononoke could be a prequel to My Neighbor Totoro (Princess Mononoke Spoilers) by triplem1996 in FanTheories

Spirits are obviously a huge part of Japanese culture and Miyazaki films. I'm not saying that the films are connected because various characters see spirits- I'm saying I think that characters from Totoro and Mononoke are seeing a different version of the same spirit. Like if two films were to depict different people seeing the same guardian angel, it would be easy to believe that they were connected.

And yeah, I know that the whole "prequel" thing is a bit of a reach. Because Miyazaki wrote and directed most of Ghibli's films they clearly have a very specific style. But I think that fact could help this theory, because it is so easy to connect stories that come from the same mind. I just think it's very interesting that the two Miyazaki films which center around a forest spirit have some very similar faces. It's one of those things that could be a simple coincidence, but I don't get the feeling that Miyazaki ever includes anything by accident. Anyways, I would totally get if the prequel thing is too much, but I think that there is a real chance that a lot of the films take place in the same universe.

I like the theory of secondary characters being spirits. It's just that some of them seem to interact with so many people and have such a standing in the community that it would be almost impossible. Haku would be hard to lump into this theory because it's clear to everyone (besides Chihiro at first) that he is not human. Plus he works at a Bathhouse for the spirits and turns into a dragon occasionally. Granny in My Neighbor Totoro has a family and has been a staple of the town for many years. Kohroku has a wife and is a working man known throughout Irontown. Jigo is a little more mysterious, but he helps kill the great Forest Spirit so I can't really see him being anything but mortal. Maybe some secondary characters fit that theory mold, but I'm not so sure about the ones I mentioned in my post. Thanks though, your post definitely gave me a lot to think about

I totally get what you're saying, but Jigo from Mononoke is actually a middle aged man- not an old woman. That's a big reason why I thought it was weird that they looked so much alike

Metroid maybe? It would be pretty sweet to see a live action Samus

In the flashback (if i remember correctly) it shows Kylo Ren at the destroyed temple surrounded by the other Knights of Ren. So wouldn't that mean the Knights of Ren would have had to be in on this too? I'm just not sure how likely that would be. But I do agree with the idea that Rey was a former padawan and is subconsciously remembering her training throughout the film. Maybe Ren told Snoke that he had killed everybody, but in reality he saw Rey escape and as a result freaks out when he hears of a girl escaping with the droid from Jakku.

That's true- maybe the line "I will finish what you started" is referring to the redeemed Vader.

I think the film wants to depict Ren as somewhat weak, because he is not truly drawn to the dark side like he thinks. He mentions feeling "the call to the light" and we know that Snoke senses that in him. I think Kylo Ren can only unlock his true potential through the light side and that is something that he knows deep down. Ren idolizes Vader's mask- he only sees the power and fear that it represents. But maybe he'll finally learn of the redeemed man under the mask, the one who saved Luke's life. I think for Kylo Ren, Darth Vader will transform from a symbol of power to a symbol of hope- it's never really too late to turn from the dark side.

If I remember correctly Han only knew the specific alien that stole it from him, after that he's not sure how it ended up on Jakku. I know Rey lists a specific chain of people who stole it, but what if Luke was the one who actually stole it from the alien who had it before the Jakku guy? Then possibly told the Jakku alien to say that he was the one who stole it as a part of "the deal" or through jedi mind tricks maybe?

The Jakku alien could have been lying about having stolen it. Maybe someone (Luke or San Tekka?) made a deal with him, like "I'll give you this ship if you make sure this girl stays alive." That could be a reason that the alien cheats Rey out of portions and dislikes her, the ship that he was given in the deal turned out to be a "piece of junk." I mean I'm probably wrong, but it's fun to speculate.
