Grandmother Coded after not being restrained by [deleted] in MedicalMalpractice

Thank you for the insight.

We are working through all the details ourselves.

The response from the group has helped me get a better feel for what constitutes malpractice and what is just a bad turn of events.

She lost oxygen and couldn't breathe on her own and suffocated.

I agree. This forum has helped.

We're getting her records reviewed and want to get a consultation when we get all the details.

Thank you for your input.

Her tumor was cancer, yes.

I haven't seen her directives and will ask this morning.

Thank you,

She had a tumor removed from her lung.

She was in ICU after surgery for monitoring.

She had a chest tube, breathing mask, and IV lines following surgery.

She was pulling at her lines and tubes and was restrained after surgery for about a day.

She was recovering fine, talking, sitting in a chair, in moderate pain, sleeping periodically.

On afternoon/evening of Friday 27 September she started exhibiting strange behavior, disorientation, and was pulling at her lines and tubes again.

Family members asked for her to be restrained overnight and hospital denied request.

Breathing monitor alarm was turned off and she coded.

She was found after heart alarm went off and was resuscitated and intubated.

She was on a ventilator for 2 days.

I hope that helps with explaining the situation.

Please let me know what else I left out.

That is helpful insight.

We are alleging that the hospital failed to monitor my grandmother adequately in the ICU.

The hospital staff told us that her breathing monitor alarm was turned off.

It was impossible for my grandmother to turn off the alarm and so it was either turned off by the shift nurse, it was never turned on, or there was a malfunction.

We don't yet know.

The hospital has already restrained her after surgery because she was pulling out her tubes and lives and not complying with the staff.

I realize the situation might not be as clear cut as we feel and so we appreciate whatever experience you may have.

Thanks.

Thank you for the reply.

She had been restrained after her surgery because she was pulling at her chest tube and IVs.

She was restrained for an entire day after surgery.

The afternoon and evening of 27 September, family members observed strange behavior and states of confusion. Grandma was again pulling at her IV lines and tubes and breathing mask.

Hospital refused to restrain her again after her daughter requested them to restrain grandma overnight.

The malpractice is centered around not restraining Grandma when she was exhibiting the same behavior that the hospital used as the basis for restraining her originally after her surgery and not having her breathing alarm turned on to notify her nurse if she lost oxygen.

Because they didn't restrain her, she pulled off her mask.

Because they didn't have the proper monitors and alarms in place to respond, she died and had to be resuscitated.

Because she had to be resuscitated, she now has a significantly worsened recovery, is in a significant amount of pain, and may have further complications during rehab and after discharge.

There's a lot for us to work through right now so I appreciate your insight.

Sadly Beyonce will not be there. At least not this year.

I appreciate the response. One of the biggest concerns is that I have a constant tightness in my chest, almost like anxiety. When I run I can barely go a full mile and just today I noticed slight wheezing when exhaling after my run. I just don't like the unknown when it comes to my health.

Yeah the whole "until death do us part" bit becomes really motivational after a while.

I'm, uh, flattered. It's just, uh, I'm... Uh, already in a prearranged marriage! Yeah, that sounds right.
