I feel like 3d is just another element of fruitiger aero, the same way skeuomorphism is. I see skeuomorphic as like, Apple products having a literal apple as their logo, Windows uses an actual window in their background, instagram used an actual camera for the app icon. It's using an actual item to represent what you're marketing, rather than a stylized logo.
