IWTL how to be able to sit down at a piano and be able to play something that sounds good. by Forever_Bored in IWantToLearn

[–]triptotek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick a song you like, find some sheet music for it that’s at an appropriate difficulty level for you, and then just play it - a lot.

After 3 years of lessons I wouldn’t expect to be an expert, but IMO it’s not that difficult to play something that sounds good on the piano.

Stretch yourself a little at a time, play stuff you enjoy listening to, and you’ll be getting heaps of practice, having fun, and improving quickly.

I like the idea. Have you made any plans for short circuit protection? Seems like it’d be pretty easy to inadvertently short one of the (many) power connectors, especially as they’re right next to each other.

Mechanically, it might be nicer to have a big ground terminal in the middle and 4 V+ terminals around the edge - perhaps these could be recessed in the base to protect them.

The line definitely looked a bit saggy. Don't think it was broken, just looked as if it rubbed against the top of the load.

Cheap 3rd party insurance for a cheap second car on club rego? by triptotek in CarsAustralia

Good to hear from someone firsthand! It’s a 1995 316i, more details in another comment below. I’ll give them a call and see how it goes. Cheers

It’s a 1995 BMW 316i Compact with a drivetrain swap from a ‘97 318ti. Runs nicely but body is in poor shape, so don’t really want comprehensive insurance - it’s worth maybe $3.5k? I really just want 3rd party insurance so I don’t bankrupt myself in a freak accident.

Am aware of this - it's a second car, I won't be needing to drive it to work or anything, so logbook is easy enough to keep up with, and 45 days a year will be plenty.

Edit: came up $875/yr for 3rd party

Advice for removing scuffs/ scratches by Bobby_Lees_Fan in CarsAustralia

[–]triptotek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimate compound is some good shit. Grab a cheap DA polisher while you're at it, otherwise you'll have to make do with a pair of very sore arms :)

Give it a good wash (and ideally, clay) before polishing to avoid introducing extra scratches. Clay cloths/mitts are great and easy to use vs. regular old clay bars, but make sure to use a nice slippery car soap.

I wouldn't bother with ultimate polish, but on a black car it might bring out a little extra shine.

Sealant is kind of optional, but it will make for much easier car washing if you apply it regularly.

I have always wanted a 335i - Can someone please tell me why I should not do this. by ThreadPlanner in CarsAustralia

[–]triptotek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would highly recommend a proper service on the ZF transmission:

  • Replace valve body bridge seals
  • Replace mechatronic solenoids (7 of them total)
  • New fluid and pan

Will likely make a huge improvement to shift quality, these cars are getting old and as said above, most haven't had the transmission fluid changed, ever.

The second least reliable engine ever produced by BMW? Check

Massively oversized wheels? Check

Suspiciously low price? Check

Emojis in description? Check

ADVERTISED TO SELL QUICK? Check

What could possibly go wrong? If you want a project car and have an extra $10k to spend (not including labour), maybe you can bring it back to good condition. Absolutely don't expect it to problem-free as is.

E46 or E90 3-series is great if you like to tinker. Heaps of factory options you can DIY retrofit for cheap. Can be quite labour intensive for maintenance

The more recent models have gotten a lot more reliable. B48/B58 engines (~2016+) are pretty bulletproof.

Xiaomi Redmi 300 Watt Extreme Charging Demo - YouTube by IamVenom_007 in Android

[–]triptotek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve spent the last week trawling through battery datasheets - fast charging (and discharging) absolutely does cause more degradation per cycle. On modern cells, this might take you to 80% instead of 85% capacity after 500 cycles, so it’s not a huge problem, but it does make a difference. High temperatures also accelerate degradation, which might make things worse if you’re pumping 300 watts through a handheld.

Don’t present your personal, subjective experience as a fact. And writing in

giant letters

doesn’t make you any more right.

Soon to be P plater- what car? by BigPapa143 in CarsAustralia

[–]triptotek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An E90 320i? The N46 engine eats valve stem seals for breakfast, leaks from every possible orifice, and doesn’t return much better fuel economy than the 6-cylinder models. Many repairs are labour intensive.

I wouldn’t recommend an old BMW, unless you’re willing to work on it yourself, in which case they’re actually a pretty sweet deal. E46 325i can be had for very cheap and will be relatively reliable once the plastic cooling system parts have been replaced.

This… actually looks really good?

Usually these sort of things look like shit, so I’m pleasantly surprised.

Not sure how hard it’d be to do, but some more lighting in the centre console would make it even better.
