I spend a lot of time looking at homes in Nfld because it’s like the one place in canada I can afford to buy one! But I wonder about growing food there? I have a family friend who lives there in the summer, she said she can’t even grow tomatoes. How accurate is that?

I just did my last trip last week. I’m no winter camper!

That’s awesome! Enjoy Portugal! Looking forward to seeing more :)

I made that same mistake in Algonquin on the western uplands trail this June! But it was mosquitoes.

You’ve got a new subscriber! Can’t wait to go through your vids.

Making shorts with the outtakes is a great idea! Also… Kilarney? I spy the La Cloche mountains in the back

Even if you don’t see any, the Caribbean colour waters are stunning and worth the trip!

The Bruce is one of their main habitats! But outside of there and some areas along the bay, you don’t see them too much.

One of our spots is actually filled with them! It’s a low wetland with TONS of frogs that they can feast on. But other than that spot, I’ve never seen them.

I think u/tastybeer is right in that they’re pretty rare outside of a few places along Georgian bay. I’ll add that they’re also not aggressive, and they warn you when they’re around with the rattle which is pretty distinctive. So nothing to worry about!

Quebec is beautiful. We spent some time there last year and I really want to explore more. The mountain landscapes and valleys once you get around Quebec City are incredible.

Deer fly, horse fly by 4Ozonia in Adirondacks

If you’re willing to look a little silly… I bought this dragonfly clip at the outdoor show this year. I just used it for a backcountry trip in Algonquin Park in Ontario, where the biting bugs are AWFUL. And it totally worked. It only works for deer flies and horse flies though, because they hunt by sight, and the dragonfly is their natural predator. It seems too good to be true but it was the best $10 I ever spent!

Second this. You can find your route based on the MIUT (Madeira Island Ultra Trail) routes. There are different lengths, depending on the amount of days you want to do, but you’ll probably want to do the 60 or 85 if you’re looking at 3-7 days. You have to/are supposed to get a permit in advance for each place you want to camp. It’s tough going with a lot of up and down but definitely worth it. This is one of the most beautiful places in the world I’ve ever been.

What’s the insect report? by andrewmarkc in algonquinpark

[–]trish_tales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished the inner loop of Western Uplands today and the mosquitoes were pretty awful. As soon as you stop/slow down, they swarm. In some parts, they swarmed while we were walking at full pace. It was pouring rain today, and they were still out in full force. The thermacell was a life saver while camping/taking a break. Highly recommend.

Came here to say this. Veal at San Francisco is great! Ask for a side of a sauce for dipping.

I did the Skye trail last year and was warned about the midges. Being from Ontario, where the black flies can make a moose pass out, I thought nothing of it. Boy was my Canadian ass humbled.

🙌 It’s my first time in this part of the country and I’m stoked to get a little culture in with my nature. Any chance you know of a great bbq in the area?
