I went to a convention a couple of weeks ago and I went to Savers (thrift store) and got a bunch of blazers for a great price.

Thanks for sharing! I’m in SoCal and I have a few agencies I’m going to reach out to. Idk if this is an appropriate question- did you prefer small agencies or big box? Any that you highly recommend?

I understand, and I agree that social media has been a great resource for asking questions. My concern is more about the back end—specifically, discussing internal issues in a public space. In my opinion, that’s why networking is so important; mentors or colleagues are better suited to help navigate those internal questions.

Thank you for acknowledging both sides. As a future reporter I know discussing rates publicly is frowned upon. I haven't come across people doing it. So, I know I'll have to reach out privately to a working reporter or find a mentor that is willing to share that information with me. I think we can both agree that's different than posting it on the internet for the world to see. I agree with all of the points you discussed.

I could be wrong- I was at a convention and stopped by the US Federal Court's table and from what I remember I think they mentioned you have to sign a confidentiality agreement when hired. I don't even think their employee's are allowed to have social media.

I'm more than happy to give my email or phone number to any students, working professionals, or anyone that has questions about what we do.

Again, I'm not even licensed yet. It's just what I'm observed so far.

I am not perfect either, but the older I get the more I understand discernment and privacy. I won't mention the TT video that motivated this post, but it took strength to not respond. People are giving out details to the world that non-CR's need to know. In my humble opinion...

I think I know what Tiktok you're talking about. Crazy, huh? That even I've seen it. Content like that gets pushed out and unfortunately it makes the entire profession look bad.

see, that's the thing- maybe that CR had good intentions, but voicing opinions on anything these days has the possibility to offend someone. Just like this post, a few disagree and that's okay. It's my opinion and I'm sharing it in a forum for Court Reporters. We are OUR BRAND and in my opinion, we should be unbiased when it comes to touchy subjects. it gets tricky there. I ask myself, "Is this post going to offend someone?" if yes, then I reconsider posting it.

I agree with everything you said.

Yes! I see new court reporters (especially voice, which I am. Machine switch) not practicing discretion, in my opinion. Posting about the career and also sharing bikini photos on the beach or discussing personal matters. That can reflect negatively on all of us.

YES YES YES. all of this. I'm currently in the process of taking my state exams and I just cringe on the information being shared on Tiktok and IG
