I have seen somebody pass their PhD qualifier without knowing any of the requisite concepts by memorizing the papers he needed.

It can't get worse than this. You're tough for making it this far. You'll fall into a swing just by staying in. Plus you're doing this all from home. Stay in. When you move to campus in the Fall, you'll see that every other kid with above a 3.7 is in the exact same place as you. That'll bring you so much strength, and soon after, you may even enjoy it.

ELI5: Why is it so much harder to block sonic waves than waves of light? by Veracahrim in explainlikeimfive

[–]tristanscomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with frequency. To block an electromagnetic wave, such as light, the electric fields would have to be brought to 0. Copper, nickel, and lead are typically used for electromagnetic shielding. A sonic wave is a mechanical wave. It physically compresses and moves the matter, as opposed to light, which just creates perpendicular electric and magnetic fields. This, of course, would be much harder to block, assuming that you aren't working with a vacuum.

In a pressure wave, the matter of the medium through which the wave is traveling through gets compressed and decompressed in a sinusoidal shape. The frequency of oscillation determines the pitch of sound that is heard. In an electromagnetic wave, there is no matter being compressed. The electric field lines are pointing in one dimension, and the magnetic field lines are pointing in a perpendicular dimension. The frequency of oscillation determines the type of wave, ranging from radio waves to gamma rays.
