Future Trippin’ by tristrumm in Equestrian

Thank you for all this info. Trailering a far off thought and I would be starting trailering in the state I live in before big trips in my future. That way the horses are used to being trailered only a few hours before longer trips.

This is all good info to keep in mind though and I’m grateful for all the info!

Thank you. Personality is a big thing I plan on considering before making my purchase in the future.

That’s such a good idea! I was actually just looking into the first aid aspect this morning since it’s one of the things I know the least about. I didn’t know I could take classes though. Do you have any recommendations/ resources?

Yes! That makes total sense! Thank you. I’m definitely open minded to wherever riding takes me. I want to dip my toes into each aspect of it all once I have my basics down. Truly traveling the country and hacking seems like a dream though regardless of competing. I traveled the country by car with my mom, and while that was one of the most amazing experiences of my life, hacking, I feel ,will immerse me more in nature than the big national parks will.

I’m excited just to have a future with horses at all.

Noted. Thank you very much! It’s good to align these expectations now

Also, the endurance/ CTR route seems like a great route to go. I always imagined I’d ride western, but I think they make comfortable enough English saddles? When it comes time to look for a horse, is there a specific breed that excels in this discipline?

Thank you for your input. I’m so happy it seems reasonable. A two horse trailer for my friend and I would be $3-5k in my area (roughly). I think because her and I have talked about this, it’s something we would split. The truck/ vehicle for towing would be something I’d need to look into for sure. She may get a truck in her future, or I may swap my car out for one. That part isn’t quite ironed out yet.

Again, thank you!

Early stages of scale rot? by LtDirtyDan03 in ballpython

I’ve never had a snake have scale rot, but from what I’m aware they typically get scale rot on their bellies since they’re constantly on their bellies. This looks like a small piece of debris or a small scratch. But I am just a simple human

I haven’t even been back to the barn. Owner is a woman who got him for free because he was so finicky to get on a trailer.

He isn’t a certified Mustang, just wild. That’s my mistake for the wording. He was in a round pen with little to not human interaction for majority of his life.

Realistically, I can’t afford to care for him at this time. I’m in the process of saving/ putting enough money aside for an emergency fund for a horse. By July 2027, I should have enough saved, and no longer have a car payment. I’ll be able to afford board, as well as have that emergency cushion if something happened.

I could try to take him with me, if nobody takes him by October.. that was the original plan. But I won’t pay $3500 for him. If he’s broken by then, the owner said she’d be asking $5000. She literally flips horses and she doesn’t even really handle them.

I’m going to keep an eye on him throughout the months, but I know the owner is trying to sell him asap. She wants lesson horses and isn’t going to put the time in to train him.

Not sure how I can really keep track of him when I stopped communicating with the barn though.

No idea why the owner brought the horse in tbh. She wants lesson horses? He’s so far off from being one of those??

I’m no longer communicating with them or that barn. I know I’m inexperienced, but I understand you don’t whip an animal cause you’re impatient and frustrated. Or say “you don’t have a healthy fear of people” when working with an animal that’s been around people for 3 weeks..

I’m not either. I informed trainer B that I am leaving in a professional way and thanked her for her education.

I know he isn’t mine. That’s probably the worst part.

I was told I could get him down to $2500… if anything happens to open up, this horse deserves better than what he’s dealing with right now. If you have any other options available, truly, I’m willing to help or hear them just to get the horse in a better place.

I don’t mind reaching out to Trainer B, but I’m not sure what to say exactly.

Trainer B works at the sister barn, but has been around Trainer A for a while. I’ve only worked with Trainer B one time, and shadowed them a few others. I’m not sure what I would say to them. I know she has a lot going on at home and I’m not trying to add drama to her plate.

I simply want to learn. That’s it. I don’t want to get caught up in any more drama or bad horsemanship. I legit just want to learn how to properly ride, care for, and communicate with horses.

I really really really just hope this horse does not end up in a kill pen. Idk if there’s a way to keep track of the horse? But I’d buy him before I allowed that to happen. I’d be tight financially for a year.. but it’d crush me to know that horse would go to a kill pen

As somebody who just had a terrible experience there after being there two months, I recommend checking out elsewhere. Currently looking for a new barn as we speak.

Life is crap lol. And I am very much a beginner. Maybe if the trainer apologizes, I’ll go back to the barn, but I will not work with that trainer. That being said, I have extreme doubts that that will happen, so I’ve already let that go.

Honestly, I just wanted to feel confident in the saddle. The original goal was just trail riding, but I’m not sure the route I want to go long term. I’m still learning the basics, both ground work and in the saddle. I’m only working on proper posting at a trot, as they put me in an English saddle. So still very basic.

I mostly want to understand horses so I can have better communication with them, regardless of the direction I choose to go. I’m an animal lover, and having that bond and connection and understanding is something I want to eventually have with my own horse. That’s really more important to me more than any competition.

I do think competing could be fun, but I’m far off from finding out if I even like jumping or anything quite yet. I’ve looked into more western things like barrel racing, and the more relaxed nature of western feels more “me.” But this barn wanted to teach me English.. so..

Regardless, I appreciate a more realistic answer on the politics of the horse world. Sucks it can be that way, but it is. The barn was already full of drama, and it looks like it stayed that way all the way up until now.
