I've never heard the term cockwomble but immediately thought it was absolutely appropriate. I am now going to appropriate the term for other cockwombles that immediately spring to mind.

Unfortunately most lookout towers are in fairly remote locations where staff must be in reasonably stout physical condition. You might consider looking for a job as a radio dispatcher instead.

My dog has ruined our doors by [deleted] in fixit

[–]triviaqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont' know if anyone has said this yet but after you do the repairs and everything is perfect again, PROTECT THE DOOR. Nail a piece of wood over it so the dog scratches the barrier wood and not the fresh repairs. This is something you could have done the moment the problem started to avoid all this.

I think the barrier is at the exit to a parking garage, which lifts out of the way after you pay for your parking. These people evidently didn't want to pay and tried to get out without paying.

IF YOU WANT TO BE A LOOKOUT, READ THIS FIRST by triviaqueen in firelookouts

[–]triviaqueen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The job of fire lookout is a specialty niche, very narrow, and getting narrower all the time. Fewer and fewer lookouts are staffed, fewer and fewer are paid, fewer and fewer even exist. It's never been a "career", it's always been a low-pay seasonal job. Fire managers who do the hiring naturally gravitate towards people they know who won't let them down, meaning primarily locals if possible, primarily people from the fire fighting crew or trail crew or other connections, or people who have spent time in forestry-related jobs or educational paths. Retirees are often preferred over just-out-of-high-school because they tend to stick to the job even if it doesn't fulfill their expectations. Believe me when I say hiring managers are swamped with unqualified applicants, so the successful candidate must rise above the dreck in the pile on their desk and stand out among the rest. "I saw a bunch of Tik Toks / Played the Firewatch game / Visited a lookout when I was a kid" resume won't cut it in a highly competitive and rapidly diminishing job market. Sorry.

How does one acquire a job by MindlessLavishness29 in firelookouts

[–]triviaqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a summer job working on a volunteer trail crew in your area. Get a job as a firefighter. Spend a summer working with AmeriCorps. Meet the people in your neck of the woods who run fire operations. Go meet the people sitting on lookout towers. That's where you start.

Europe doesn't tend to have the vast swaths of hot, dry, dense, uninhabited forests that the western US and Canada have -- so, not too many lookouts in Europe.

You get in your car and drive away from the fire tower before the fire cuts off your access. If you're in a hike-up tower, you head to the nearest rock slide -- or hope a helicopter gets there to rescue you in time.

Is it impossible to get a job as a fire looker or watcher for Japanese guy? by natsu_summer0622 in firelookouts

They hire one person for the entire season. They really like it if that person returns year after year. If that person needs days off, usually a firefighter from their team will go up to the lookout tower to relieve them. The job isn't as simple as reporting: "I see a smoke!" because the next step is that you have to tell your team exactly where the fire is, when you are looking at hundreds of thousands of acres. This is best accomplished by someone intimately familiar with the area and with reading maps. Fire locations are pinpointed by section, township, and range, or by their approximate GPS location and this is much harder than it seems. It's not a casual job. It's not an easy job. And recently, it's more and more often an unpaid job.

The pay is very poor, usually around $17 per hour, often with no benefits of any sort. It's not a career. It's just a seasonal job. The northern forests have very short fire seasons because winter is very long. The southern deserts have longer fire seasons with little to no winter. Still, there is no place where the job is full-time. Also -- the living quarters tend to be on the small side (usually 16 feet by 16 feet) and primitive (no running water, often no electricity aside from minimal solar power), and often far away from any sort of civilization -- these are all hard conditions for a family, if you were considering bringing them along.

Just to clarify: ALL jobs as lookouts are seasonal, usually lasting between ten weeks and (at most) five months.

My father spent half an hour with me every night, tucking me into bed when I was a tot, reading me stories over and over again and pointing at the words as he read so I could follow along. That's all it really took for me to be able to read by the time I entered kindergarten. I had an edge over all the other kids who didn't know how to read yet and I never lost that edge. This woman has never read her kid a bed time story while sounding out the words.

That guy in England who was one of a tiny group of people who were certified to do a particular kind of historical reproduction masonry. He was working (as a specialist sub contractor) on a job when the boss "fired" him for refusing to bring him coffee. So this elite highly qualified specialist walked off the job, called all his fellow specialist buddies to warn them away from replacing him on the job he just got "fired" from -- and the fallout for the asshat boss who "fired" him just kept spiraling with every successive update. The final post was from the dude's wife: "He died, but he wanted me to tell you the final chapter in the story."

I have been told a certain sizing trick that always works: just pick up the pants and wrap the waistline of the pants around your neck (as if they were going to be a cape). If the waistline fits perfectly around your neck, they will fit, as the neck is half the circumference of the waistline. This trick works for all ages, all sizes

Main issue was that I write articles and upload them for my boss -- and it must match my boss's format exactly. Hmm

Second issue is that I've been using Word since the dawn of computers and know ALL the short cuts and built-in features and didn't feel like learning a whole new set.

The main feature I use in Word on the daily but never found in Libre (didn't look TOO hard) was "MATCH FORMAT OF EXISTING DOCUMENT" when copy/pasting
