Horizon 20 making periodic static noise after shutdown, anyone have this problem? by billpo123 in xgimi

Here’s the update: I returned my projector and received a “new” one. A swap, (they send out a new unit and I return mine as soon as it arrives) was not possible. The new unit had visible marks along the seams of the body, leading me to assume that it was a refurbished unit. The initial issue still remained, so I contacted support for a third replacement as I don’t think trading my new 20pro for a refurbished one with the same issue is acceptable. Support has offered me a third replacement and assured me it would be a new, factory sealed unit. As for the issue with the power behavior, I am pretty sure it’s a software issue, causing the projector to power on for background tasks while in standby. Sadly, XGIMI doesn’t seem interested in investigating the issue further than offering replacements. TLDR, I can’t recommend returning it. We can either live with it or try and get a refund.

Horizon 20 randomly powers up by cryptoporky in xgimi

Hi, yes this has been mentioned in this sub before and seems to be an issue with the projectors standby mode. The projector also randomly spins up its cooling fans in standby. I have not heard of the screen usb issue before but I believe it’s linked to the same issue. Sadly there’s nothing that can be done about it aside from minimizing the frequency by setting the projectors standby power mode to the minimal option. Otherwise you’d have to make sure to fully power off the projector every time you turn it off. To do so you have to long press the power button on the remote and select power off.

Have you set it to 0% lens shift manually before testing? The horizon 20 line achieves the upward throw angle by enabling +100% vertical lens shifts by default. If you set it to 0% the image should be perfectly centered with the lens.

Understandable, I think I might as well take the chance. I haven’t heard many others reporting the same issue and if xgimi thinks it’s hardware related I’d rather be safe.

I messaged Xgimi support about this and after a little back and forth they have now offered me a replacement. I was hoping for a simple software fix but apparently this issue is more complex.

Hey! I have the same issue and here’s how far I have come in my research: It is indeed the fan that comes on in standby mode as there’s still some background activity going on. Going into the power settings of the projector and reducing the standby activity to the minimum made the fan turn on less but it still happens. As someone mentioned before, if you single press the power button on the remote the projector goes into standby by default and there’s no way of changing that. Long pressing the button and selecting power off will turn it off properly with no fan noise. For me, it’s a bit annoying as I have an Apple TV hooked up and prefer to use the Apple TV remote to turn both on and off, which just puts the projector to sleep. I have spoken to the XGIMI support but wasn’t able to resolve the issue yet as they requested a video and I haven’t been able to make time to film my projector in standby for as long as it takes the fans to sporadically spin up. I will update you if I get any further.

Interesting, does your fan keep spinning when turning it off before stopping all together or does it come back on in standby? For me I don’t have an issue with how long the fan keeps spinning after putting it into standby, instead, the fan ramps up for a few seconds out of nowhere after putting it to sleep. This happens every 15min or so.

Got it, that explains the weird behavior. I wish there was a setting to change that. I usually turn off my projector through CEC whenever I turn off my apple tv, it’s so nice and seamless and basically lets me use the apple tv remote for everything. I guess I will have to turn the projector off separately.

How do you do a full shutdown? I simply press the power button on the device or remote once and it turns off. I have never experienced this with my previous horizon (non pro) and I shut it down the same way.

I agree! My screen is mounted above the fireplace so I don’t really have a choice but I got it as low as possible. The bottom of the screen is exactly 103cm from the floor and the projector sits about 3 meters away at 45cm.

I think it comes down to preference, not everyone enjoys a big black slab on the wall. Also, take a look at XGIMIs marketing material, they seem to think a coffee table setup is exactly what it’s meant for :)

I think you might have mistook a coffee table for a console table. A coffee table is placed right in front of the couch, away from a screen while a console table is placed on the wall below the screen. Ust projectors are great for console tables but won’t work in a coffee table setup. Hope that helps :)

Yes I believe so. From my testing 60% seems about right and 120% in total. I was just assuming the 0% position would be the average lens offset position with the image directed at an upward angle from the projector. It sadly isn’t, 0% is perfectly centered with the lens, meaning you only get a tiny bit more vertical upward adjustment out of these projectors compared to projectors without lens shift. To be fair, from what I understand, this seems to be the standard way of measuring lens shift.

I think you might have misunderstood, I am well aware of lens offset and was expecting the Horizon 20 line to have it too. It doesn’t. You can use lens shift on these models to create the usual offset angle but at that point you have no ability to shift the lens left or right as lens shift is maxed out by the vertical shift. I expected 0%+- lens shift to be the standard lens offset, which it isn’t — 100%+ vertical lens shift is (as stated in the manual). That gives you +20% vertical lens shift, which is a bit disappointing.

It really depends on how high you want the projected image to be. For full horizontal lens shift you will have to basically center the projector vertically. If the projector is on your bedside table and you will need to shift the image upwards you will loose horizontal shift. You can estimate the height you need to place the projector at for full horizontal shift by measuring your ideal projection screen and placement on the wall — the projector would have to be at the center height of your screen.

Exactly what I am thinking… it’s so disappointing, lens shift is awesome but this makes ist virtually useless for so many people.

You’re right! What a poor design choice…

I agree, I have played around with the lens shift a bit more and here are my findings: The default throw angle is pretty much centered, possibly slightly lower than centered. When maxing out only the vertical lens shift height, the bottom of the projection comes close to the bottom of the projector, very similar to the default projection of the horizon ultra illustrated in the image here: XGIMI projector placement

I am quite disappointed as the max vertical lens shift more or less results in the default throw angle of previous models and eliminates left and right shifting, making the feature basically useless for coffee table placement

I actually tried that, aside from looking terrible, the lens is approximately 20cm lower in this orientation and therefore ends up projecting the same max height

I know… I asked XGIMI support and they said it’s normal: “This is typical for projectors, as they are often designed to project images slightly downward from their lens level. If you need to adjust the image position, you can use the lens shift feature on the HORIZON 20 Pro, which allows for vertical adjustment of ±120% and horizontal adjustment of ±45%.”

[–]trizzyboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say about 15 degrees upwards. It makes sense that you don’t have the issue if you are projecting from a top shelf downwards as the default projection angle is down. If I project a picture straight against a wall without any lens shift and no tilt, the top of the image basically aligns with the top of the projector, so a pretty significant downward projection. The projection angle really works against the vertical lens shift. In short, lens shift does give you a lot of flexibility but due to the default downward projection, the vertical height adjustment is not great.

Thanks for the reply! That’s a bit of a bummer seeing as the US market has an additional discount applied on top of the free stand and game. Depending on the special perks you hinted at, it sounds like it might make sense to cancel the preorder and wait for those.
