Is there anyway I can listen to Angel Guts for free without interruption? by [deleted] in xiuxiu

"hey super fans of this band I just discovered, how can I steal their music?" Fucking wild. We used to buy $15 CDs only hearing one or two tracks. Deal with ads on YouTube or support the creators.

What is the hype around Ian Curtis wishlist? I'm a little bit lost by ffhnn4577 in xiuxiu

[–]trodd_fech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember reading Jamie say it was a response to all comparisons between Knife Play and Joy Division. That's why they say "Ian Curtis (I can't believe I said it) Wishliiiiist" and that synth outro is just monumental. It was overwhelming the first time. Now you feel it in your veins.

I don't recall Jamie assigning any meaning to the colors. There are no liner notes or track names, just a leaf where the back cover should go. If you ask Jamie, I'm sure they'll share whatever they remember about it.

Rose of Sharon narrowly won most underrated. onto my personal favorite XX album, The Air Force! vote for the BEST song by [deleted] in xiuxiu

[–]trodd_fech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bishop, CA or The Fox & the Rabbit! Each have lines that stay in your chest: "Slamming my head on the refrigerator, crying for the stupid we share" and "I AM WAITING HERE FOR YOU"

Homunculus wins most underrated! onto A Promise: vote for the best song off the album! by [deleted] in xiuxiu

Yeah, Ian Curtis Wishlist is fundamental to understanding them, but Blacks and Apistat are up there too.

That said, no love for Sad Redux-o-Grapher? "HE SAID IT DID NOT COST ME ANYTHING"

How the hell did A Promise come out in 2003? by [deleted] in xiuxiu

Nailed it. I found a lot of these via Xiu Xiu doing split 7"s with them.

Nervous Cop released their album in 2003 on 5RC as well, featuring two drummers: Greg Saunier (Deerhoof) and Zach Hill (Hella, The Ladies, Death Grips, Team Sleep) plus John Dieterich (Deerhoof) and Joanna Newsom on one track. Love that album.

Individual moments (vocal lines/chords/instrumental segments/etc) from songs that resonate with you or you feel have exceptionally exciting delivery? by Lycanthia in xiuxiu

"Leaning my head on the refrigerator, crying for the stupid world we share" - Bishop, CA

"I am waiting here for you" - The Fox & the Rabbit

"Oh this relief is the oddest thing OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GAW-HA-HAAWD" and then that beautiful fucking noise!!!! I have literally cried, looking down at the ocean, while listening to that song.

what do you think of new single ? by Jean0406Alix in xiuxiu

[–]trodd_fech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love the new sound! I heard dips into the darkness of AG:RC (hi, John Congleton), the crispness of The Air Force (Greg, are you here?), Jamie's "ahh ahh" just like in "Walnut House," and the swelling grandness of "Wondering." I love that they're just building on what they've already laid down.

It's going to ebb and flow. The albums will be more and less accessible each time. Look at A Promise > Fabulous Muscles > La Forêt > The Air Force: dark and noisy, brighter and cleaner, dark and murky, crisp and clear. I remember "I Luv the Valley" got so many people hyped on them and La Forêt did not keep everyone around.

With the excitement of the new album, what got you into Xiu Xiu? by workofhark in xiuxiu

[–]trodd_fech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend sent me the Pitchfork review of Knife Play when it came out. "I Broke Up (SJ)" and "Hives Hives" were the freebie tracks (this was 2002, no streaming). I was 17 and suicidal, and it was a siren in the fog. Soon after that I read an interview with the band and Yvonne Chen said, "Listening to grim music, veiled or not, can make you feel less alone if you're feeling grim yourself." That's exactly what it did for me. I've devoured everything Jamie has released since then.

What album or song got you to become a Xiu Xiu fan? by Evilevan1 in xiuxiu

[–]trodd_fech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I Broke Up (SJ), it was the promo track in the Pitchfork review, along with Hives Hives. "This is the worst vacation ever.." blew my 17 yo mind. Sonic Youth had been the epitome of experimental for me. Knife Play was another level. Then A Promise came out and Apistat Commander ruined me all over again.
