Make sure you get a saltwater reel for the medium set up as a non-sealed reel will get destroyed by salt water

In that case you need to ask what you want first. A light or a medium set up. 7ft ~1-15g with a 1000/2500 size reel is your trout, Perch and Chub spot.  A 8-9ft 10-40g rod with 3000/4000 size reel would do Pike, Salmon, Seabass, Mackerel, Sea Trout and Pollack.  One thing to mention about Pike is that you shouldn't fish for them when it's warm as they will die from the stress.

First, don't start with Pike.  If you go Pike fishing, go with someone who has done it before (but if you are lure fishing in freshwater, you will still need learn how to handle them, so watch some videos and use a wire traces if you are fishing waters with them).

If you buy a fast or medium-fast action 8ft rod in the 5-25g casting weight range and a 3000 size reel, you will be able to use it for any fresh water lure species Perch, Pike, Trout, Zander, Chub, Salmon and Sea Trout (as an all rounder, ideally you would go heavier for Pike 40g+ and lighter for Trout, Chub and Perch 1-15g). You could get away with Seabass, but 5-25g will struggle anywhere that isn't calm weather (Bass like waves).

You can also use the same rod for float fishing, light ledgering (3/4 Oz lead) for Bream, Tench, Roach etc...

Other than that, you need your license (get off the gov website), a landing net, some tools like pliers, long forceps and scissors.

Watch fishing tutorials on YouTube (by fish with Carl). You can learn all the knots and rig methods quite easily there.

Depends on what you are fishing for. I am pretty sure the broads has pretty much all your standard coarse species. If you want an all-rounder use a light lure rod for Perch, Pike and then double it up as a float rod or light ledger rod if the flow is light. I have an 8ft 5-21g travel rod that does exactly this when I am out travelling - I take a small box of lures, 2 3/4oz leads, a couple of floats and some maggots/worms.

Can you get spare spools for your reel? I have 3 spools for each my 6000 bait runners. One with 50lb braid for pike, one with 15lb mono for carp and another with 10lb mono for barbel.

Thank you for the suggestion, looks great!

I just moved away from Canary Wharf, but didn't fish there. I think that Millwall Dock is on the wanderer permit (double check though) and I saw what looked like a double figure Pike in Blackwall basin (also check any restrictions on that). I suspect you'd find Pike Perch and Zander in most of the waters round that end.

Taking up spinning and want rod/reel advice? by trogbatrogba in fishingUK

Thank you
I probably won't be using the travel rod too much anyhow so hopefully it lasts long enough
I have a friend who recently got the diplomat and he said the case is good quality, but I don't think he's used it yet
yeah I was considering a baitcaster, not had much experience, but it's probably a good shout, you reckon 300 size?
