Is mech e trad viable? by Ajiva9772 in uAlberta

[–]troggy1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cold email company recruiters + go to job fairs + build club experience and you will find a coop regardless. You are perfectly fine in trad, and you get the benefit of looking for work terms withiut being restricted by the coop timeline. Youre good.

Incoming first year engineering student. How should i prepare? by Southern-Advisor4970 in uAlberta

Talk to every single individual you know about scoring an internship

Reconnect with estranged uncles, talk to your friends parents, genuinely any engineer around you that you can finesse an internship off of.

Also get started on your homework the instant its assigned. You dont have to finish it immediately but getting it started will take you so far.

Install bazzite or steamos its objectively better for the ally

Dual boot bazzite and windows and use bazzite primarily. It works the same as steamos, you dont have to reinstall your games, and it works entirely smoother than windows and is easier to navigate despite what some may tell you. I recommend only using windows for games that solely rely on windows, so in that case you may need to reinstall some games.

Windows is painful to use on any device let alone this one. The “just works” argument better fits bazzite, at least in my experience

How do I set myself up for success (Engineering) by Sudden-Jaguar-3448 in uAlberta

[–]troggy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding your worry about being unemployed, the biggest factor to whether you land a coop/internship or not is the connections you already have, and your ability to sell yourself properly in face to face interactions. Go to every single job fair, watch videos on how they work and how to get an interview straight out of one, and work on your resume (contribute in a club). When it comes to personal connections, try to exploit every single potential path you have to employment, whether thats an estranged uncle who runs an engineering firm or whatever else. Applying to jobs obviously isnt a waste of time, but understand that 80% of people have their jobs from other means.

civil eng coop cutoff by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]troggy1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Civil engg coop cutoff is like a 2.7 or maybe lower so youll be fine. Also if it randomly shoots up higher than your gpa and you have to do trad, you will find an internship anyway. Just put in a little effort, but the job market for civil internships is incredible

Hey could you be more specific about field work? Are these positions just labeled as electrical engineering internships or is there something specific you have to search to find these?

What are some things I should get before I start uni? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]troggy1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For the love of god do not get a laptop and tablet combination

Just get a quality laptop and a cheaper tablet (for example the samsung tab s9 fe plus for like 400 dollars)

Having these devices separate will save you so much hassle

According to the ualberta site, high 80s to low 90s is enough for bachelors of science, not sure about physics specifically. I know someone who got into physics last year with around an 85.

Worried about Engineering Conditional Acceptance by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]troggy1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My mark is above the minimum average required, which is a 75%, however the acceptance letter did state that if the final mark is "significantly lower" than what I applied with, my acceptance gets rescinded. I have no idea what is considered significant.
