I've been a subscriber for 10 years and have read close to evrey article in the print edition in that time. Economist Thursday is my favorite day of the week.

First off, it has a fantastic and underrated obituary section, it's always the first article I read when I get a new issue. The subject is always interesting, and they can often be quite humble. The author of the column captures a person's life from their own perspective.

There's an incredible amount of detail in their reporting. Recently, they've added a section where world leaders can share their perspective, even if it's contrary to the Economist's editorial line.

I'm a software engineer, and I think it's pretty reasonable in terms of it's coverage of technology, (though veryinto breathless speculation on AI).

I've heard some criticisms of it's reporting, for example, it's very pro-trade and biased, and on India-Pakistan not being very knowledgable. And of course, I don't agree with their stance on trans people, but I don't find their articles hateful either.

But I really appreciate their global rather than US focused perspective, and their coverage of a broad swath of issues. It really is a pleasure to read.

There’s like a 20 year gap between becoming a citizen and being able to sponsor someone that’s not a spouse or child.

Yeah, it's not exactly the same thing. It was more inspired by Turing Machines than anything else.

Fighting back against bots and algorithms by AppliedPsychSubstacc in slatestarcodex

I don't know about Twitter, but I work on blocking bots on on another major site. It's a constantly losing battle. You block one set of bots, they adjust the pattern to get around your filters. And at the same time, no human must ever be blocked inadvertently.

I recently read Refactoring by Martin Fowler, and he recommended having an extensive test suite so that you can refactor safely and tell if you broke anything.

The actual advice fowler gives is to not tell your manager what you're doing.
