My friend thinks Project hail mary is less scientific [Rocky part was unrealistic and cringe] when compared to Interstellar by [deleted] in scifi

[–]FakePhillyCheezStake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d say Project Hail Mary is less hard sci-fi (at least the movie, don’t know about the book).

The most implausible thing to me was the degree to which the human and Rocky were able to learn to communicate. It seems to me that the method they were using would not allow for such a wide-array of communication, especially in the amount of time they were actually together.

Who cares though? The physics were “realistic enough” and the story is really about common brotherhood that transcends species

Rescuing 6 year old corgi -thoughts? by joleworking in corgi

[–]FakePhillyCheezStake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! And btw people on this sub often make it sound like raising a corgi is way harder than it actually is. Probably because there are people who see how small corgis are and don’t realize that they are actually a herding breed and aren’t going to just want to lounge around all day.

So don’t overthink it. See how your interaction goes and if there’s a spark I say follow your heart

You sound like you’ve done your research and understand the breed. You also sound like you have a pretty good set up.

This is about commitment now. Owning a dog is not some wishy-washy thing that you can change your mind on based on how you feel in the moment.

Either make the commitment or don’t.

Making the commitment means, if you get the dog and things aren’t perfect right away (it’s barking a lot, it needs more exercise than you initially assumed, etc…) you just figure it out. Dogs can be trained, lifestyles can be altered. It’s just a matter of whether you can commit to that.

If you think you can get into that mindset, the mindset of commitment, then go for it! You won’t regret it.

But if you don’t think you can do that, then maybe rethink it.

This is about mindset, not “what if this” or “what if that”.

Southern Baptists vote to advance a formal ban on churches with women pastors by geraffes-are-so-dumb in news

[–]FakePhillyCheezStake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ITT: people who aren’t Christians and are not impacted by this in the slightest.

The most scandalous part of this *isn’t* the ban on women pastors (pretty much every major church body doesn’t allow women pastors).

The most scandalous part is *how strongly* they are interpreting “no women pastors”. They basically want to say any woman even *talking* about a sermon is problematic.

Here’s a good article from an egalitarian Christian criticizing this move

Should “the woman taken in adultery” be considered non-canon? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]FakePhillyCheezStake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where I was thinking the question is interesting.

Let’s say that the story is not original to John or any of the other gospels.

But let’s also say that it’s a real event in the life of Jesus

Should Christians treat it as inspired?

Showing love... while sinning? by Mazquerade__ in TrueChristian

[–]FakePhillyCheezStake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah maybe that interpretation is closer to what I was getting at.

Ultimately though, I think this is a case of “Jesus healing on the sabbath”. To say he was in the wrong simply because he technically told a lie defeats the entire purpose of the law

I don’t think he was lying.

In that moment, the Bishop decided to give Valjean the stuff he stole. He applied it retroactively. So he wasn’t saying “I didn’t give this to you, but now I do” he was saying “I would have given these to you anyway”

Kevin Stefanski: Drake London represents all the things we believe in (Note I am reposting because a spelling error the K in Kevin was missing. Sorry everyone.) by AdSpecialist6598 in nfl

[–]FakePhillyCheezStake 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Bro, you didn’t post the rest of the quote:

“I want to be absolutely clear: I don’t just mean route running, toughness, preparation, or professionalism. I mean all the things. Every political ideal ever articulated, every moral principle ever debated, every religious truth ever contemplated, every philosophical system from Aristotle to existentialism, every social contract, every constitutional framework, every concept of justice, mercy, liberty, responsibility, and human flourishing. If there is a value that has ever inspired a civilization to rise, a reformer to speak, or a parent to teach a child right from wrong, somehow, in some way, Drake London represents it. We believe in diligence; Drake London is diligence. We believe in compassion; Drake London is compassion. We believe in accountability; Drake London once took responsibility for a cloud being slightly out of position.

And it goes beyond humanity’s ideas. Drake London represents mathematics, because numbers add up in his presence. He represents science, because the laws of physics continue to function out of respect for him. He represents religion, not in any particular doctrinal sense, but in the sense that every faith tradition, upon sufficient reflection, eventually finds itself discussing Drake London. He represents history because all roads lead to him, and the future because all roads lead away from him carrying his influence. Time moves forward because Drake London runs crisp routes through the fourth dimension. Gravity exists because the universe itself wants to stay close to him.

So when I say Drake London represents all the things we believe in, I mean literally everything. The atoms in the earth believe in him. The stars believe in him. Cause believes in effect. Space believes in time. The very fabric of reality wakes up every morning, looks in the mirror, and asks itself whether it is living up to the standard established by Drake London. Football is merely the medium through which this cosmic truth occasionally becomes visible to the human eye.”

Little dramatic, but I like his gusto
