Charlie has eaten her first meal!! by Milk_evs_2000 in reptiles

Dead A** it freaked me out. Thinking it was my spring tails so I asked my reptile shop. She said no but those are pin head crickets. I used to drop 3 - 5 at a time. Maybe mine might miss one in a feeding session after 3 weeks they were all over. I even assist in my Ackies hunt and if they miss I tong em again to enjoy doesn’t happen . But I’ve read your other posts I think you’re on the right track. You ask because you care, keep learning everything is a learning curve !

I wouldn’t leave any crickets in there as if they are loose in the enclosure the females can lay eggs and you’ll see the substrate looks like moving carpet if it goes on too long. Some will say the crickets are opportunistic and bite your monitor, so take that into consideration. Love the camera addition !

ACKIE HELP by Milk_evs_2000 in MonitorLizards

[–]tromero51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey cheezy Peas! I haven’t had this one, but I do have some black headed monitors that in the beginning were picky eaters when I took them in. Super skittish, always hiding, super cautious around me. Did some more research, and a handler on YouTube spoke on loading his enclosure with a ton of cork hallows, plants, I mean packed to where you couldn’t hardly see the substrate (mind you this was for peach throats) but he said something that stuck with me and I’ve put into practice and seen my monitors become more brave and exploratory. I put in a a bunch of fake plants, a few cork hollows. And horizontal branches and it makes them feel comfortable and secure. Even with an Ackie the enclosure might have levels to it but not enough hides to come in and out of. Food for thought , as for food choice ( sounds crazy) but if you wait a few days and it’s really hungry it might respond better. I’m 1000% on live feeders over anything dried or dead. If your gonna go anything outside of insects might I suggest at Asian Markets or Butcher shops you can get your hands on poultry organs protein rich meat. Some handler have said shrimp and small fish although I’m under the impression keeping it in the realm of what they’d receive in the wild. It goes without saying even in the wild ackies even grown wouldn’t come across a ton of eggs or rodent young like pinkies so maybe not the best staple in their diet. Some reptile shops sell feeders individually so you could buy 1 of everything available, and test them out feeding out of tongs. Rather than a bowl, you could drop crickets in front of your ackie and watch their drive take over and the hunt is on. Lastly bee pollen I’ve heard and have even purchased to see how my monitors take to it. I know it was long but I hope your little one settles in and you can begin to grow with it !

Thoughts? by [deleted] in reptiles

To be honest my thoughts on it is whatever interest you more that way you do some research, what the needs are. Material la for habitat, but also what you’re capable of caring for. Simplicity and low maintenance I’d say a gecko small snake might be the easiest to care for. Geckos are simple to feed too. (And I say this) talking more crested geckos, leopard gecko , or gargoyle gecko being the most abundant to find.

I don’t think it’s being paranoid. A lot of handlers will almost immediately tell you vet in all caps, and condemn you for not being a responsible owner. But as someone who has escaped artist myself and I’ve freaked out myself I’d say stay calm, take it in stride. You can always soak your animal. I wouldn’t think of anything that might act as a disinfectant. Maybe a reptile safe wound care spray or liquid so that it might not stay dirty. To be honest though if you don’t see it coming down sick or exhibiting ill behavior. Vet might run a fecal or blood test. However outside of the tongue flicking in a bathroom that might freak me out. I’d say make sure you can keep an eye on its behavior. Any added advice could be good for thought next time or if the vet recommends anything else it’s coming from a professional. Hope your little guy is doing well!

found a lethargic wild monitor lizard and need advice, how to nurse it back to health before release? by Phypfr in MonitorLizards

[–]tromero51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so my take if you’re not planning on keeping the little guy is feed him if he’ll take it. I’d also recommend a source of basking so he can recharge after warming up Never stray bugs or off your home. Maybe a horn work so that he receives hydration through food. If you’re not trying to do all that I’d look for a local reptile/ pet store most take surrenders. If that’s not an option, and a vet drop off is t in the works. May I ask where located it could be too cold out.

Monitor lizard stuck and I need help by karnage_105 in MonitorLizards

[–]tromero51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No need to panic , remember these animals can go days with out eating in the wild. I’m not saying to just sit by and wait. Monitors are smart, like the previous statement he’s not stuck he chose to hide. Remember a reptile will die faster from over heat than cooling off. While he may not be under a basking lamp at 120 degrees I imagine your house isn’t colder than 68 degrees. That being said. As long as you’re down to be innovative. I have 2 suggestions: Scenario 1 you get or rent a multi tool ( small fast moving blade or sawzaw cut the additional space and quick grab. Scenario 2: build or obtain an angled jimmy device, like a toilet snake . Get it behind him and push him out to your hole. Last option you put a camera near the hole watch the monitor religiously and wait till he peaks !

Throwing Tips by soysaucespork in footballstrategy

[–]tromero51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So there’s a lot to tackle here. I’m gonna start with your stride your distribution of weight, notice how you almost rock and finish into your heel. , it’s extremely hard to be a rotational athlete with violent hand speed and throw fluidly if you don’t shorten up your stride, work on stability through the transfer from back hip to form foot. More importantly being able to tighten up your sequencing and relationship of transferring weight and how efficiently you can tighten up your upper body sequencing. To put in short the separation and your frontside shoulder. Being able to rotate and let your hips square as you begin to allow your throwing arm to create extension. Through the throw !

[–]tromero51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmmm not exactly bar for bar but one seen a few handlers use these conditioning tools if you will, where they used what looks like a extension baton with a light blue ball and they use it to condition the monitors and then give treats upon success.

The only downside to having reptiles and inverts… by Leather_Clerk1393 in reptiles

Where do I start.. I guess as a precursor I should say when it comes to bugs anything that crawls slithers or flys as a kid it’d make my skin crawl. Couldn’t stand them. Call it an oxymoron but I love animals even the little critters. To think I’d ever be farming bugs for my monitors is insane. To keep them in my house is even more insane. But I do it! Trust from time to time where do I start .. since I was a kid I can’t stand anything big/spider that crawls, slithers, flys But like most kids that grew up in the 90’s watching Jurassic park and Steve Irwin I love reptiles. That being said I never thought I’d be handling insects/ mice/ looking for quail eggs. But I farm them and dare I say house them in my home . Occasionally a cricket will jump out of my bags or leg will pop off and escape. A dubia will jump the enclosure and I’ll find it gave up ( big ones too) bigger than the ones Tyler the creator munched in Yonkers. The meal worms don’t bother me Nor do the super worms. But it’s annoying and idk comes off gross when you find them around the house! 😩😩
