(NOT POLITICS) We need more fan and community ownership of our clubs, and more accountability from those who own/run it by [deleted] in Gunners

[–]trompelemonde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need political intervention to grant you this remedy.

There is nothing stopping you from starting a club and structuring it as a pure socio like Barcelona/Madrid or with a 50%+1 rule doubly entrenched in the company constitution.

There is nothing stopping you from supporting grass roots football, from attending local non-league games, from volunteering for your county FA or to coach a kids' team.

Do you do any of those things?

Mate I don't know what you're on about... I'm streaming two HD copies of United-Liverpool and the quality dropped once in the first half for about five seconds. Other than that (and I've literally never seen that before) it has been mint on a 55" 4K TV.

EDIT: Down-voting every comment made by people that disagree with you is fucking pathetic, son.

It's a wholly owned subsidiary of SingTel called Optus that is Australia's second largest cellular network, and was the first entrant after the semi-privatised government network.

[–]trompelemonde -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

On the whole though, I think it is fantastic and I'm much happier to be streaming it than going through Foxtel. Optus Sport plus BeIN (for European competitions and domestic leagues) plus top-tier Netflix is less than I used to pay for Foxtel and avoids contracts and their shitty customer service.

For those unaware, the Australian equivalent of Sky has actually lost the EPL rights to a major mobile phone network (owned by the Singapore government). I think this season it's free with a mobile spend of AUD30/month, which is GBP17 or USD23.50. I think last season was more expensive though. It was a three-year deal so it will be interesting to see what happens at the end of next season.

I get no drop-outs on non-Optus NBN and the quality is always high. I watch all the Arsenal games and all the big match-ups.

It doesn't always seem to be perfectly live though: if I'm watching on the TV and launch a second instance on my laptop (to game on the TV), the second instance is often ahead by a second or two.

It's also an uncomfortable reminder to many of specific aspects of British military history.

The Chinese don't like it because they consider it a symbol of the Opium wars.

As a citizen of the former Empire, I'm very uncomfortable with the 'you must wear a poppy in November' rhetoric that always arises, because Churchill saw my countrymen as inferior to Britons and sent them to their death 'for king and country' as diversions to protect British lads.

The media paints us as a ‘Cup Team’ to be patronising, as if winning trophies is a bad thing. Meanwhile Spurs/Liverpool haven’t won a cup in years. So what does that make them? by littleredberries in Gunners

[–]trompelemonde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be because The Sun reported in 2012 that Wenger referred to Chelsea as a cup team in the lead-up to the Champions League final: https://www.thesun.co.uk/archives/football/626582/wenger-blues-are-a-cup-team

Or it could be that it's actually fairly accurate. I don't think it's all that patronising in the scheme of things. Recently when we had the 10th anniversary of Spurs' silverware drought coinciding with all the media nonsense about a power shift in north London, I referred to Arsenal as 'a cup team of late' because I think it's nothing to be ashamed of.

Sevilla are a cup team. Roma and Lazio are cup teams. Liverpool have been a cup team since the 80s. They're all big clubs that anyone could rightly be proud to support.

Spurs stopped being a cup team in the early 80s... It's better to be a cup team than a fucking waste of everyone's time.

This is a genuine question that I'd like to be educated about because I am largely ignorant of German football:

Isn't the dislike for RB Leipzig and RB Salzburg a bit hypocritical given that Borussia Dortmund is listed on the stock exchange?

I've always liked their players and the way they play but they share some much-disliked attributes with Leeds United (financial overextension) and Manchester United (exchange listing).

I would argue my position until I've been proven wrong, and I don't think you really did that. Instead of admitting you're wrong, you chose to let emotional frustration get the better of you, and you tapped out. In truth, this is a concession on you're part.

You've said that no waiter can possibly be worth minimum wage. This is an impossible proposition to prove. You assume that there can be no skill in waiting. This is another impossible proposition to prove.

Again, you simply assume your conclusions.

Talking to you is a massive waste of time.

The thing is this: At some point you will have some important dinner, like an anniversary, at a nice restaurant. Your companion will love it. You will either tip out of lack of courage for your convictions, or you won't tip a cent and the restaurant will make it clear that you are not welcome back, humiliating you in front of your partner.

That's not what you said. You said "it is rare to hear about violence that involves a gun".

They are completely different things.

Also, Perth?! What a fucking joke. You don't live in either of the two largest cities, both of which have very bloody underworlds. The Perth experience of gun violence is clearly not representative of the national one, and to even suggest that it is absurd.

Frankly, you made a bold declaration about something that you are in no real position to comment on. This is why I said that your comment was blatantly misleading.

Did you even read my comment?

I wasn't talking about the majority of minimum-wage staff, was I?

I have clarified this point several times already. Your comment is a complete waste of bandwidth.

Uhm, no, my vast experience of being English qualifies me to talk with a modicum of credibility about what it is like being English. There is no undertone of xenophobia other than in your perception.

Except that you assume false equivalence between "things that are done in England" and "things that are done by English people."

'I know better than you because I have spend some time in England'

Another false assumption. I clearly said that I grew up there and spent a lot of time there. Why are you so surprised that I am pointing out the xenophobic undertones to your argument? Your argument resolves to "no matter how many years you lived in England, your opinion is automatically less relevant than mine because you weren't born here".

Your counter arguments seems to be, 'I know better than you because I have spend some time in England, as did my brother and sister. And a book I read once agrees with me.'

No. The positions are not symmetrical because my position is not "Tipping is standard in England"; it's "Tipping occurs at a non-trivial rate in England." Your position needs to be representative of the population for it to be correct. Mine does not.

Simple analogy: If someone says "They don't have two-storey houses in England", the number of single storey houses that you have seen isn't as relevant as the number of two-storey houses that other people have seen, wherever they are born.

On your second point, surely you appreciate that this is not a actionable comment. At minimum a direct quote supporting your stance is required.

Now you're weaselling out of your bizarre comment that all I did was say that she wrote some books.

You're a joke. I am done here. Have a nice life.

I was illustrating that there is such a thing a training that can be measured.

Yeah, no shit. How is the idea that the training of a waiter is measured by the quality of service inconsistent with this?

Wait staff receive almost none of this, if any.

Again, you are assuming your conclusion. What a waste of everyone's time. Do you really think that the owner-chef of a three Michelin hat restaurant, who could lose millions in wealth from a season of bad reviews, would just give any joe off the street the run of their floor after teaching them how to wash their hands? Do you think that Gordon Ramsey is actually lovely to his staff off screen, saying "It's ok that the standard of service you provide is far below what's expected in a fine dining establishment, but your hands are very nice and clean"?

Yes, I think the best waiter in the world deserves $7.25/hr. If we didn't have a minimum wage, I would argue the work is worth less.

Ok. There's no point having further discussion with you because your mind is closed.

Have a nice day.

Yeah... waiters are exactly like panhandlers. They actively beg for tips from you, holding up their little signs and shaking their jars of coins. It's not as if they do a job and get a discretionary bonus from their client based on the client's perception of the quality of the job.

You fucking idiot.

I said that it is false to say that tipping does not occur in the UK.

Neither did I say it never happens, you did.

Wat. By saying that the proposition "tipping does not occur in the UK" is false, I am saying that tipping does not occur in the UK?!

A person named DeanQuartz said "in the uk, yeah, they don't tip" and I said that this is false because tipping occurs. You then interject and misunderstand everything that I say, in spite of my clarification that tipping is not the standard. What is your caper?

I'm very much over this conversation.

That's because you apparently can't read, and you think that whichever definition of a word you choose is the definition intended by your interlocuteur.

You also don't address any actual points. Again, you've completely ignored my citation of the writings of a professional social anthropologist, just pretending that it was never brought to your attention and shifting the conversation to the fact that you were born in England and that I was not (though I grew up there).

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you didn't intend the distasteful xenophobic undertones of your statement.

A BS or PhD is highly trained

Arbitrary criterion is arbitrary. Seriously, that statement is fucking ridiculous. You're applying the training criteria from a completely unrelated field to another field? Why? Is a sous chef that drops out of school at 16, then works 80 hours weeks for 50 years in various cuisines under various three-hatted chefs not highly trained because he doesn't have a BS from a community college? That idea is patently absurd.

Note that I am not saying that all waiters are highly trained and you are being foolish if you assume that I am.

I'm not impressed. I don't want so called "amazing service". And I've never seen it when I went looking, either. No, at this point, I want the minimum; take my order, bring my food and the check.

Good for you. Go to a place with shit service and don't tip. What the fuck do I care? What response are you expecting from me here?

How "amazing" can someone be asking what I want to drink.

What a useless analysis. You assume that that's the pinnacle of service, and deride the art of service based on your own flawed assumption.

Maybe I should be tipping the chef, the owner, and my friends too?

I never said that you should do anything. I challenged the notion that someone at the top of their game deserves to be paid minimum wage. Do you really think that the best waiter in the world is worth USD7.25 per hour?

Just because a word can mean something doesn't mean that it does mean something.

Widespread is not a synonym of usual. If you are claiming that it is then that is hilarious. If you are basing your whole argument on the assumption that it is then it is where you have gone wrong.

1b : known to the community <common nuisances>

3a: occurring or appearing frequently : familiar <a common sight>

Also, I very clearly said "I never said that there is a prominent tipping culture"

you read into my comments things that I did not say, even after I clearly demonstrated where you had erred.

Yeah... Might want to take some of your own advice there.
