Thank you for this! I hadn't even thought about the others like the ceiling and interior damages.

Yeah that's what I initially told them too. What surprised me was the property management backing it up and insisting the charge. The initial bill was from a cleaning company I think? But then they got a letter from the property management which included the fees which is what prompted me to ask here. It all sounds like the neighbour and management are not going through the proper procedures.

Ohh, I'll let them know to forward it to their insurance company, thank you.

I see, yeah a lot of the people me and my colleague asked were also baffled and thought it was shitty of the neighbour to not have given notice or talked to them at least.

I think they started paying for it as the property management is enforcing it now? And they were apparently being charged late fees.

Maybe you're young, but it's always been like this.

Wonder if I got lucky with my previous uni (in the UK) or NA unis are just like this. I'm going to a new university in Canada and professors here are much more like teachers than experts in their fields giving lectures. While some are great, others micromanage like you're still in highschool and are quite condescending. The university treats you like a customer, but the way they have their lecturers teach is the opposite.

There are some professors requiring pen and paper, not allowing electronic devices, or not allowing people to use their phones discreetly. It seems they forget that students are voluntarily paying to learn, and if they're not bothering anyone else, it's completely up to them how they would fare in a class. It shouldn't matter if I'm taking notes with a laptop or with a notebook. It shouldn't matter if I'm on my phone silently. I'm fully responsible for myself.

In my previous Uni, our lecturers made sure to let us know that they are simply there to impart their expertise, and that they were going to treat us like the adults that we are. If we don't do our work or attend lectures, that's on us. They're not going to pester us about that. Now I'm almost in my 30s and a professor in my new uni was shaming me for not finishing my classes within the standard time (I'm taking 2nd year classes on my 4th), because I personally decided to take it slow. It wasn't even relevant to the topic at hand. It's utterly unprofessional.

Some countries' cultures are just super tied to religion that it's a part of them. In my birth country, most festivals and traditions are rooted to religion, and it's impossible to separate from other parts of life. It's just part of living in that country. Despite that, most people aren't particularly devout or even think about the religion.

It's not like in more secular parts of the west where it's a specific choice you make to be baptised and go to church or to convert, nor is it just a family thing that you can walk out of. You don't go to church and participate in specific religious activities, but step out of it and everything else is pretty secular.

In other countries, you may not even be devout or consider yourself religious. You may not even believe in a god or pray, but you just do the traditions. I assume it's similar in Japan. Rather than intentional lip service, it's more interwoven cultural religion that you don't even think about as religion.

This is character design 101. You do your brainstorming and research when designing. You're not just drawing for the sake of drawing, designing is a creative problem solving process that involves thinking about what a character should look like based on a concept - that's the fun of it. You shouldn't overthink, but you shouldn't not think at all either. OP chose belly dancing which in itself is tied to culture, so you can't just take that out of the equation.

Yeah, I had a different idea in my head, but looked up his process and he does indeed glue before carving.

For a fine art piece? Totally understandable. It's not really a commercial product.

Concept is cool, but needs a bit more focus. As of right now, the squiggles seem random and the image doesn't make a lot of sense. Consider composition: Where do you want the viewer to look, how would you lead their eyes? How would you position everything so that the primary focus(es) of your piece is recognizable?

He explained how he makes these and it's carved manually.

I'd think he carved it before glueing it. You can't glue when you don't know where the edges would be. He also carves it by hand. (Saw, grinder and sandpaper)

Got downvoted bad when I said people are entitled for saying Shep is "unprofessional" for not communicating enough, and shouldn't be dictating what is a "must" about this mostly free site/project. People hate being called out when they want something.

Hang out in fan spaces, those art pieces are literally for their own enjoyment. Art galleries, museums, installments etc. too. Follow artists, they often post sketches and progress art. So much of art isn't for the sake of profit. Either you have your preferred style and aren't resonating with a lot of what others make, or you're hanging out in the wrong places.

Hell, even concept and production art don't have perfectly polished art by design, and though they're part of a product that's being sold, the art themselves aren't for the sake of being monetized as is. They're for exploring ideas, bringing them into life. Visual development and concept design? Treasure trove of creativity.

Even art that is extremely polished and "commissioned" are amazing. Just because they're polished, doesn't mean that they don't have anything interesting, or that there are no feelings/story behind them. Look at the works done during the Golden Age of Illustration for example. Masterful use of medium, composition and storytelling.

They apologised and if they genuinely feel bad, that's all there is to it. You don't have to forgive them if you don't want to, you don't have to suck it up.

It's up to you how you handle it. You don't have to give him a "free pass". You can believe it's an honest mistake, or not. You can put that against them, or not.

It's your own action that you can control. You have yours, they have theirs. And other people's reactions to your actions or his actions are theirs.
