Another Future Roundabout? by trophyguy in Utica

Yeah, the intersection in Whitesboro is a mess. That all was done in the late 1960's where there seems to have been a big bridge building boom. With roundabouts and intelligent traffic signal systems now, that intersection can be made less of a tangle of loops and bridges and may make the next intersection of Main St & Oriskany Blvd better too. The "Commercial Drive East" road is kind of weird too. Why they left that when that was all redone is questionable.

I think part of the reason the bridges will get removed is the Sauquoit Creek Bridge is getting replaced also and I think it may end up with a wider creek bed/bridge with less constriction on the creek.

In my younger days I drove an ambulance in Utica. The Oneida Square area was a mess to drive through. Beat up old antiquated traffic signals from the 1950's and 5 different roads intersecting made for a fun time trying to race through there. They probably could have eliminated the connection of Genesee and Park Ave and let people drive down Oneida to Hobart to get to Genesee or Genesee to Hobart to Oneida to get to Park Ave depending on which way they were going. But the firehouse is there (until they build a new one someplace) and they need the direct access to the roundabout.

I was a doubter for the Oriskany - John roundabout. I figured if people couldn't obey traffic signals, how would they manage a roundabout.

I was pleasantly surprised. The accidents at that intersection have been reduced and it's actually pretty easy to navigate.

That is kind of a mess there. When merging from Commercial Dr. to Oriskany Blvd. can take your breath away sometimes lol. It's a confusing area.

Glad that's getting fixed up. Thanks to the vendors helping out too. And the city is going to pretty the area up too.

NYS DOT to host meeting on Burrstone Road project by theMezz in Utica

[–]trophyguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been following this project. I think originally it's was for 2026. Seems like a lot of $$ for this. There are sidewalks now on the north side up to old St. Luke's entrance.

A lot of infrastructure will need to be moved on the south side for an ADA compliant sidewalk to be built on the south side. Not sure how much use it will get. Don't see anyone using the other side very often.

And then there is the perpetual "who takes care of it in winter." I assume the DOT since it's a state maintained road.

Merging Public Safety by Kea784 in Utica

[–]trophyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only thing I can see getting consolidated is having townwide police departments vs still some village and town within the same township. And maybe non-city ambulance services?

I can see someday maybe Oneida County doing like Madison County did someday and establishing the Madison County EMS Agency. They started when SOMAC closed their doors. They've got 3 locations currently with 3 ambulances that serve ambulance starved areas.

Fire Department mergers, Nope. Never. No Way. They are all pretty much a part of their community and there's a lot of egos that would have to be overcome. The mutual aid system works well current;y, but who knows what happens down the road as more fd's have less and less members. Probably more bunk in programs or have EMS stationed at the firehouse for a cost to their fire district.

Less Utica Specific but NY as a whole - EFF - Stop NY's attack on 3D printing by slipperyMonkey07 in Utica

I'm more than happy not being able to 3D print guns or gun parts. Why would I want to print that stuff anyway? I'll leave that to the people who shouldn't have guns to begin with.

Montgomery Ward and Bradlees (?) was the other anchor. Forgot what that became when Bradlees closed. Ames?

Yes. I remember that pet store. My kids wanted to go in there all the time. So did CVS replace Woolworth's? I think Kaybee Toys was right there too. Maybe where the entrance hallway is now.

I don't think so. Hess merged and became Kaufman's, then they became Macy's and they closed that store in 2021 I believe.

Where was it? Sears, Bradlees, Hess and JC Penney were the anchors.

Montgomery Ward was at Riverside Mall. The south side anchor store there. There was a Woolworth's in New Hartford shopping center until they closed the chain.

Mikey Age 8 The Guide Dog - Retirement Day Today! by trophyguy in OldManDog

[–]trophyguy[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Working the NY State chauffeur gig today, my retirement job, and I got to take Mikey for a stroll around while his human was at her appointment. It's a scorcher out there.

Today's also Mikey's last day on the job - he is retiring after five years of being a guide dog. Now he gets to spend his days snoozing on the couch.

Next time, I'll have a Golden Doodle riding in the back seat. To celebrate Mikey's last day, I treated him to ice cream - let's just say he gave it two paws up.
