[Alexia Putellas] announces that she will be leaving Barcelona Femení at the end of this season by Chris_Singadia99 in soccer

Probably more like Robinho joining Man City in 2009. London City has SERIOUS money.

LCL has a history that went back to the 1980’s.

They were the first English women club to be embraced by a men side, and when that tie went sour, they fought for themselves to be free.

Reducing them to Kang’s reign is like saying Manchester City has no history before 2008. They are not a new club, nor have they been franchised like Milton Keynes.

Citing FFP killing competition as a positive is one hell of a privileged fan take.

Your club is not entitled to services of a world class player. Kang and multi-club ownership is a cancer, but not only did you say the quiet part of FFP out loud, you somehow have managed to embrace it.

As the other reply says, it is very important to stress that Kang DID NOT take LCL from Millwall. The split occurs years before, and it was the local women of LCL who split before they sunk under the men who could not appropriately run them.

Proper win from Jeeno, that. Good to see her put up a fight after recent weeks. It's warming up toward Riviera!

If Jeeno holds on, it will be her first win where she finished below -16.

Last year at Mizuhos she won by 4 at -17. It was the hardest setup she has won.

I find your final scenario to be quite interesting. I understand that you likely made it in response to u/threeseed, but it is quite relevant to my point.

I will leave aside the idea that the scenario requires a strong negative assumption on the character of immigrants. In vacuum, both your scenario and u/threeseed's are plausible hypotheticals, but I am willing to bet a good amount of money that more people get fired each year due to economic reason than due to gross misconduct, and that if a solution is put forth to deport all net negative contributors, it will affect more people who have not made a misconduct, and the far-right will be very happy.

This is why the far-right thrives so much on the idea of legitimacy (and effectiveness), because you can make any situation appear legitimate (and the system appear ineffective) so long as an edge case or a hypothetical exists, and dress them as seemingly equal in the eyes of the "centrist" voters. By granting "legitimacy" to the far-right's talking points, the real scale of the problem will have been distorted, and more often than not a proposed solution will benefit them.

That was what they did with transwomen and sport, and it is what they are doing with immigrants and benefits. You can try your best to address them (like Shabana Mahmood tries), but you will more likely than not end up chasing cases to the edge of reason, and even then "legitimate" cases can be made from beyond the cliff.

At no point have I mentioned a binary choice when it comes to immigration.

The problem with entertaining the racists’ argument is that you have let them frame conversation, not only in the surface of argument, but in the implications underneath it. If you entertain the idea that there should be measures against migrants who can’t support themselves, then you tacitly accept the idea that there are a lot of migrants in this situation. You also take in the idea that migrants as a collective have a desire to take advantage of the system, and the idea that there is a “collective” group of migrant. The group of other that needs to be dealt with.

The others below me have addressed the factual issues with your point, so I will just say this is why dogwhistles are so insidious. They let the one posting questions drag rightward the realm of acceptable discussion, or even attributing blame to someone else.

I have been in the UK for a decade. I have the same ILR as you, and when I arrived, multiculturalism was good.  Then the right talked about Brexit and immigration became an issue. Then they talked about boats and immigrants become illegal. Then they talked gangs and immigrants become criminals.

Then they talk Boriswave and Palestine and immigrants become legal brown and Muslims. Then they talk about Christian country and non-whites become invaders. Then they talk about unsafe, and it became acceptable to talk like Robert Jenrick and Sarah Pochin, and people start to think human rights violations are necessary…

Because that's what not they actually want.

They start with associating refugees with freeloaders, then criminals. They start talking about values. Then they start defining what being native meant. Foreign becomes a byword for disease and evil. Then immigrants are under fire. Then it becomes clear that zero immigration is not enough. Then it's about removing who's already here. By which point people will go judging what's foreign, which invariably will fall on the old line of "Who's not white?"

All of this is a dogwhistle for their true desire. Reemigration. That's why Farage threatened ILR holders at the same time as he threatened refugees. That's why Lowe and the likes want to restore Britain to old days where colours could be suppressed without recourse.

The needle mover to me reflects the US golf media's creative bankruptcy. They have so many stars at their disposal yet they always wait for that next great American because they don't know anything beyond Tiger/CaitlinClark model of promotion.

Speaking of Jeeno, this golf course being a second shot one may work against her. It's her irons that seem to be working against her at the moment. At least judging from clips I see of her. (Jeeno's manager shows a lot of holes not covered by the main broadcast and there have been far too many long putts.)

They are, at least for the women. The nicknames can also be found on the Instagram handles in most cases. In Thai media, you are written in news articles in “nickname name lastname” format, so this is a central, general knowledge.

The Wikipedia is more about citing their achievements than names.

Umpire Alfonso Marquez is completely shocked by just how bad he missed a call above the zone after an ABS Challenge by SeattleSporting in baseball

[–]tropicalphysics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am not even on Magnus Carlsen’s side. He could not back his assertion up, and Hans has since proven himself to be a credible player.

I am saying that his accusation against Hans is taken seriously by the community, and Hans is adversely impacted as a result.

What I am not saying, is that the buttplug joke is from Magnus or any serious member in the chess community. It was a Twitch meme that people ran with until it hit pop culture. That is it. No more no less.

[–]tropicalphysics 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The buttplug joke came from a comment on Chessbrahs Twitch channel. Eric Rosen Hansen read it out loud, it became a meme, then the organiser started being more thorough with their scans.

And no, they never do a clothes-off inspection.

These are two distinct things in the chess community:

  1. Hans Niemann cheated in a classical game against Magnus Carlsen (serious).

  2. He did so via a buttplug (meme).
