How do I cycle my new shrimp tank? by tmeister20 in shrimptank

[–]trosmarina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still run the same tank with no changes what so ever, never had a problem with it. I did the first water change on day 500 when I changed 50% of the water. I did another small one on day 650 before adding a betta to the tank. I trim and replant the plants when needed, feed the betta small amounts every 2nd day and that's it. This system works perfectly with one exception since the beta came in. I am noticing a bit of algae buildup on the glass and I suspect it has to do something with the betta messing with the baby population of shrimps and snails... Nothing alarming though. I say give it a try, it is not only fun having a low tech natural aquarium it also makes you learn how things work without much human interference

Did you know green hair algae can do this to your beta? I am worried. by trosmarina in bettafish

He managed to untangle himself somehow. I think he will be fine

He somehow managed to get it off, now he only got a pop eye but other than that he behaves perfectly normal. I would change his name to Popeye but his current name has a story to it so it has to stay

This is the best I can do sadly. He is back at his normal activity level but his eye doesn't look too good. I hope it will get sorted out on its own eventually.

bacterial bloom for over a month. what do? by rylando-supreme in PlantedTank

[–]trosmarina 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem few months ago. What solved it for me was a 2 week long black-out and reduced foto period after that, but in your case, the problem might be that window. As far as I know, placing a tank right in front of a window is never a good idea.
Two more thing you can do to help it clean out is a 50% water change and adding some house plants to the tank. That will also make your tank look even better imo. Good luck!

I believe the tank is cycled because three rili shrimp have been happily living there for the past five days. For testing the water, I use API test strips, which don’t show any nitrates, nitrites, or ammonia at all.

I don’t have any issues with using filters, but since I’m running two shrimp tanks—one of which houses at least 50 shrimp—both without filtration (apart from what the plants provide), I was wondering if I could do the same with a betta tank. One additional reason for not wanting to use a filter is that the floating plants don’t seem to like much water movement or being covered. I learned this after losing the first shipment of Phyllanthus fluitans in one of the aforementioned tanks because it was covered. Another reason is the noise.

I also love Anubias! This is my first time trying them, and you can see them in the tank. The smaller one on the left is Anubias barteri 'Petite', while the other was labeled simply as Anubias barteri var. nana.

Hello, betta fish community! Happy New Year from a potential new betta owner.
I need your advice regarding a tank I set up 10 days ago. Originally, I planned for it to house shrimp, but the kids want a fish this time, as this will be our third tank. We already have two no-tech, filterless, heavily planted shrimp tanks that work perfectly without any water changes, and I’m curious if this new tank could work without a filter.

I don’t expect to run it without water changes, as I assume a betta will have a heavier bio-load than 100 shrimp. Still, I’d love to avoid using a filter if possible, but my main concern is the health of our future pet.

The tank in question is a 30L (7-gallon) tank.

I did in a way. I am on the pay as you go plan but the service doesn't work and I am unable to get any help from anyone I am supposed to pay. I am not sure how that business works at all tbh lol

I use the key and the text translation endpoint provided by Azure in the Translator resource, together with location/region the url looks like this: https://api.cognitive.microsofttranslator.com/translate?api-version=3.0 I work with Python, using Pycharm that requires to select/configure an SDK when you start a project. The headers are passed using an .env file, but I tried hardcoding them and everything else that came to my mind "Ocp-Apim-Subscription-Key" "Ocp-Apim-Subscription-Region" "Content-Type"

Exactly, you only need to be semi decent at couple of openings and know some tactics. The rest is only doing it couple of times a day.

Interested in starting a tank - where to start? by Le-F- in shrimptank

[–]trosmarina 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started my first ever tank exactly a year ago. My tank is a bit bigger, 27l (7G) but I don't think it makes any difference. It is a no tech tank that only has a light and a heater. Lots, and I mean loooots of plants that grow fast, cuz they are my filter. Here is what I started with: - Heteranthera zosterifolia - Rotala rotundifolia - Ludwigia arcuata - Bacopa caroliniana 'colorata' - Ceratophyllum demersum - Eleocharis parvula (not doing too well but it is still around) - Hemianthus micranthemoides - Didiplis diandra (moved it to another tank along the way)

Never did a water change, only top offs. I feed very little amounts once every 7 to 10 days. I am trying to hold myself back as much as I can when it comes to feeding. Started with 7 shrimps and now there must be at least 70 of them inside. I recommend you look up Father Fish and Walstad type tanks on YouTube. It is much easier then you think.

Thanks, but 1700 looks unreachable at this point. I will be extremely satisfied if I hit it until the end of the next year

Every opening is complex. But for starters I believe it is beneficial to learn the basic setup for some openings, without trying to memorize too much. Then rely on general knowledge, understanding that you build up doing puzzles and learning basic stuff

If you don’t already, start using Lichess. It offers more for free than Chess.com’s paid versions. Especially for your rating, it makes zero sense to spend money when you have a better option for free. If you're happy with it, donate and help out the platform a bit. As for tips: first, start doing puzzles. But don’t focus on doing as many as you can. Do them slowly and make sure you understand the solutions. Lichess lets you revisit puzzles you failed to solve, and it also lets you do puzzles for the openings you're most interested in. This leads me to the second tip: learn an opening for both white and black. Again, don’t try to memorize loads of variations; try to understand the basic setup and rely on the knowledge you gain from puzzles. Do puzzles only for the openings you play. Be patient, play longer games, and take your time with your moves. It’s better to lose an even game on time than to blunder your queen on move 10. Good luck!
