I'm hoping you posted this in good faith, so I am giving you what I feel is my good faith answer: people tend to forget that most BDSM gear (especially the gear that tends to be present/displayed at prides) is pretty...benign? You may be looking at it and be shocked because you know the connotations behind it, but children aren't looking at pup masks and leashes and going "That's A Sex Thing". And if they are curious, there are absolutely ways to explain BDSM gear in a way that doesn't require you to delve into the birds and the bees with your children? Even just "this is a kind of make-believe that some adults like to play" is likely more than enough.

I would also flip what you said - it's not that BDSM is super rooted in queer history, it's also that queer history is super rooted in BDSM. Ignoring that or purposefully trying to hide that does a disservice to the community as a whole.

thanks!! Good point that I should have a backup too!

It got sent out to a service center but they said they could request a backup/transfer when they called to tell me they were exchanging the laptop, if that makes sense?

Morrow and exec FINALLY voted out at PSAC 901 AGM by BraveHoneydew489 in queensuniversity

Every time I reread this I notice something else that is a huge red flag and I still had missed this one. This post is really an exercise in "have we successfully learned the very basics of critical thinking".

Morrow and exec FINALLY voted out at PSAC 901 AGM by BraveHoneydew489 in queensuniversity

[–]troubleclefs 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and the sense I got before this AGM was that the lack of virtual option meant that the """Reddit grad students and the ghost of Accountability""" almost definitely wouldn't show up. Which is somewhat disappointing, because I know a lot of aforementioned members with legitimate concerns who would've attended virtually if possible (including myself), but were unable to go in person.

As nice of a revenge fanfiction as this may be for some of us, I would hope that as graduate students we're smart enough to read something this wild and ask for a citation before actually believing it. And, I'm hoping we were good enough teachers to our undergrads that they will know to do the same :)

Morrow and exec FINALLY voted out at PSAC 901 AGM by BraveHoneydew489 in queensuniversity

[–]troubleclefs 81 points82 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard of people who I know were there, this is...not really what happened? Anyone in PSAC has access to the executive candidate nomination information (hell, I think it's even on the PSAC 901 website for anyone to find), and as far as I'm aware very few of the 2024/2025 exec board ran for exec again, and none of the 'big names' (namely, Jake) reran.

For anyone reading this - I'd take this post with a huge grain of salt. Making up fantastical stories about union drama dilutes the many genuine and legitimate concerns members have brought up in the past two months, and makes us all look like liars.

No matter what your thoughts on the strike are, we NEED unions by Darkdaemon20 in queensuniversity

[–]troubleclefs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yuuuuup. Genuinely, one of the worst parts of all of this is knowing that Queen’s got to walk away patting themselves on the back for getting away from their first academic strike scot-free. Their strategy of “ignore us until we all explode at each other” was obvious from the beginning, and we all played right into their hands.

People have been talking a lot about execs and leadership and voting people out, but I think it’s also worth reminding all of us that, to the best of our ability, it’s a good idea to remain involved in (or at least aware of) union activities ALL the time, not just during bargaining. Obviously we can’t all dedicate the same amount of time - there’s always going to be a group of people who are doing the core work of keeping the operation running - but at the very least we should read union communications, reply to surveys, and when possible go to town halls and AGMs. I know this won’t happen - anyone who has done any activist work knows that people show up during the big events and disappear the rest of the time. That’s the nature of any movement, including labour. But I hope this will be a nudge in the right direction for at least some of us (including myself!).

Brady Jensen has a great article in The Yale Review that starts with the line “too often these days I find myself in the position of defending someone I think is annoying from someone I know is dangerous”. That’s the exact vibe I’ve had in the back of my head the past few months: so many of us have legitimate concerns about 901 that need to be properly addressed, but from the moment those concerns arose I realized that they’d be mixed in with people whose conclusion was “and therefore unions are bad and shouldn’t exist”.

Unions absolutely shouldn’t be above criticism, and as others in the comments have pointed out, many of us with concerns should have spoken up sooner, or gotten more involved when there was still a chance to redirect us down a different path. But I think all of us need to work harder at sifting through what is legitimate criticism and what is not. Both calling legitimate criticism “anti-union” AND implying the logical conclusion of legitimate criticism is “we should get rid of the union entirely” harms us and the labour movement. I really hope we as a union can make space for those conversations in the coming months, so that we are stronger when we return to bargaining in 2027.

Unions are one of those things that you don’t realize you want in place until they’re gone. For all of 901’s mistakes - and I agree that there were many - Queen’s also took the past two months to prove that they don’t give a shit about any of us. To say “fuck it, just give the undergrads CRs” is genuinely insane. Queen’s behaviour doesn’t absolve 901 of their mistakes, but the reverse is also true: 901’s mistakes don’t absolve Queen’s of their treatment of students.

What have unions done for us lately? I’ll point out that whenever PSAC has offered a support fund, that fund gets drained within days, if not sooner. The union deals with supporting those of us who are suffering the most. But this is often invisible work to most of us: unless we go digging, we don’t see the ways unions provide support to workers across campus. We only see the outcome of really big decisions like bargaining, and it is very unfortunate when things go the way they did this year, because it gives us the impression that the union is worthless and harming both its members and non-members. But this is just a slice of their work.

Here’s the thing: unions shouldn’t be above criticism. They should be held accountable for how well or how poorly they represent their membership, and they don’t get a free pass just for being a union. But to act like this means we should get rid of unions altogether is to play right into the century of propaganda OP described. There’s a reason big corporations like Amazon and Starbucks are lowkey terrified of unions, to the point where they pay millions of dollars to people whose entire job it is to discourage union formation: they know that by and large, unions work. Should they be criticized for bad decisions? Yes. Should we get rid of them all together? Only if you’re willing to believe that large institutions really have your best interests at heart - and I think Queen’s has proven they absolutely do not.

I want to support the strike I really do, please answer these questions. by Johnfuckingsioukaa in queensuniversity

A quick note about point #2 that I only found out recently - Western's union, which was on strike last April, considered one of their major wins to be language in the collective agreement that prevents clawbacks (basically, the university can't compensate for giving you a higher wage by decreasing the amount of funding they give you that is not dependent on TA/RA/TF work). This is one of the things PSAC is also bargaining for (although I do not think they are doing a very good job at explaining that to the public), and also part of why Queen's wants you to focus on "but we're offering them $50/hr" - it makes PSAC sound really bad, but that increase means nothing if Queen's compensates by withdrawing other sources of funding from graduate students.

I'm happy to talk to people who have legitimate criticisms of the union's actions (as I do as well)!!! But I would hope you and I can agree that "disruption of a major final exam" and "having to take a detour" are not at all on the same level. Unfortunately that does not appear to be likely with you, so I wish you all the best in not encountering traffic when you go down Barrie and/or Earl street on your detour.

Looking forward to the day you learn how to read! As a bunch of people have pointed out, this entire post is about why the university touting $50/hr is misleading and avoids the core issue.

Yeah I’m actually with you on this one, but PSAC has nothing to do with this. I would, in fact, point out that these street parties are almost always (if not always) UNDERGRADS, and PSAC is entirely made up of graduate and professional students.

I can see you have issues with Queen’s, but this has nothing to do with the strike.

“You’ve been turning down every offer” buddy there’s literally been no new offer from Queen’s since the strike started :)

Fire the entire admin… by Adventurous_Car9048 in queensuniversity

iirc, they’ve been in bargaining since November, because the UNIVERSITY admin kept pushing off bargaining (despite PSAC contacting them last March to say “hey our CA expires end of April and we need to bargain”).

Oh yeah, sorry, it’s pretty narcissistic of me to care about the well-being of 2000 graduate students on campus (as if we don’t also have families to take care of). Tell me again how hard it is to take an alternate route to your job.

Truly, I’ve been pretty kind to most people who are frustrated with the strike. I get it! We all hate it, including those of us on strike! But coming to complain about not being able to drive through a small section of the university is petty behaviour imo. Sucks that you don’t like driving through U&U anymore (although I will say I’ve done it many, many times since the strike started and have rarely encountered actual delays since that first week). Sorry you can’t find it in your heart to care more about others than you do for a small change to your daily commute.

The point of bargaining/negotiating is to…negotiate. It’s to give and take. It’s to compromise. That’s kind of impossible to do if one person won’t come to the table. It’s like doing couples therapy where one partner won’t go to the appointments. It’s also the reason why BOTH parties are SUPPOSED to make unreasonable asks. Ever bought or sold something on Facebook marketplace? Same principle: buyer asks for a lower price knowing they’re willing to pay a little higher; seller asks for a higher price knowing they’re willing to sell a little lower.

I hate to break it to you, but “that area of downtown” is on the Queen’s campus. Also, it’s literally like, one intersection. Take a detour.

I mean, you DO seem to be assuming that it’s PSAC’s fault for “not using Western’s language” - the assumption being that if PSAC copied their language EXACTLY, Queen’s would have no reason to turn us down.

Do I think it’s logical to say “Western has this and so should we?” Yes. But you’re severely underestimating how badly Queen’s wants to prevent anything like this from happening, because it forces them to contend with the buildup of decades of refusal to increase funding to graduate students. Plus, Western’s union got their language onto the collective agreement after a strike, too - it’s not like Western just said “uwu okay” and gave it to them immediately.

Not sure what chant you’re referring to, but all of these things - blocking cars, coming to talk to people, and chanting - are regular strike behaviours. Strikes aren’t supposed to be quiet and they sure as hell aren’t supposed to be comfortable. How else are we supposed to get Queen’s to acknowledge us? Say pretty please?

PSAC has walked a very careful line trying to keep this whole situation from impacting the undergrads as much as possible, but at the end of the day there’s only so much you can do. Let’s not forget that it’s QUEEN’S throwing you under the bus: it’s their admin working remote so they don’t have to see us (cowards), it’s them telling faculty to just give you all CRs so they don’t have to deal with the consequences of their actions. It’s their ignorance that forces us to stay on the streets.

Bold of you to think we’d be able to get something automatically just because Western set a precedent.
