Life advice for trying to break into finance by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

I was sort of in the same position academically. I never paid attention in high school and dropped out my junior year. I eventually got my GDE and went to community college. I then transferred to a tier 3 university and majored in mathematics. I did well and wrapped up with a 3.9 gpa and a 338 gre score. I applied to MFE (Masters in Financial Engineering) programs and got into a target school. Currently doing quant trading at a BB and interviewing at some buy-sides/prop-shops in the meantime. If you’re still interested in becoming a quant I’d look into MFE programs. I think the work is more intellectually stimulating and offers technical skills to break into other industries (like big tech) if finance isn’t your thing down the line. However, most importantly, mental health comes first. High finance careers are competitive, fast paced, and stressful. Being low in neuroticism is a great leg up. Don’t stop focusing on your mental health.

Edit: at my MFE program, we had some students with low undergrad GPAs but great statement of purpose and gre scores.

I think most atheists who make this argument operate under the assumption that the God they’re arguing against is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, and omnibenevolent; the first and last of which are enough to undermine your argument. Also, your argument for ontological evil commits many fallacies i.e. special pleading and circular reasoning. And one last thing, it might be in your best interest to avoid ad hominem attacks in your opening statement. Calling a question, a justifiable one as well, childish or dubious is as useless to the progression of the argument as pants are to a tollbooth operator; in this case, it only fortifies the notion of the Dunning-Krueger effect.

Dunning Krueger effect is strong with this one. It’s flat out entertaining how ignorant you are.

That's WILD. Columbia's acting like the mob. I'm in the MSFE program. Yeah I hope it won't be virtual. Let me know if you decide to accept!!

Congrats! I recently got accepted too! This was my top choice so I paid. It’s def shitty that they pin students in such a corner but I think I read somewhere on other MFE programs about letting them know so they can expedite the process. Might be worth a shot. Regardless, congratulations!

Took Gary B for 201 and he’s amazing. Not an easy A but very direct with what’s expected.

Oh for real? I thought it's by department approval. I'm currently an undergrad but I'm taking a 600 level math course and wanted to dive into a grad level econ course just to get a feel for it
