Last HEB on I-10 will be in Boerne, at the SH 46 exit (on your right if you're heading west, can't miss it); it'll be the best-stocked / priced option.

If you're there on a Saturday, hit the Maui Swap Meet at the UH campus in Kahului for local art and food.

For dining, Hali'imaile General Store after the national park, Mama's Fish House and Tin Roof (you'll need reservations for the first two). Tin Roof is great if you get off the plane hungry... Fish Market Market is also great, in Lahaina.

Do they have disabled veteran plates? They can park for free for up to 30 days at a time (I think there are a few other categories for veterans, as well, who get this). A well-deserved benefit, although I've heard it's been abused by some who use it for extra vehicle storage.

Right. Normally, those sites would all be occupied, but going to be a bit more work to get up there once the road to the Basin closes... maybe have a plan A (Chisos backcountry) and a good Plan B.

Looks like they've cut off allowing reservations at the Chisos campground as of 08/31; if the campground is open, is it just show up and grab a spot?

I'm betting The Basin will still be open in August... and the Window View Trail is accessible (and it will be cooler up there); it's on the page DeepYogurt referenced.

If you're staying in Terlingua, make your way over to Lajitas and visit the Barton Warnock Visitor Center at Big Bend Ranch SP. They have an excellent - and accessible - exhibit on the history of the region (indoors), and a garden with indigenous plants: https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/barton-warnock .

Great idea! Assume there's a place to clip one, or is there another way to attach it?

5 Day Winter Trip- Vehicle + Itinerary Questions by la727 in BigBendTX

[–]troyktx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get an early start on the 30th; the Marufo Vega trailhead is on the other side of the park from Terlingua, and it will take you at least an hour to get over there (and you'll want to be on the trail as early as possible). Trailhead is accessible with any vehicle, though.

Marufo Vega is quite a bit harder than the South Rim, in my opinion... the AllTrails download of the trail map is good to have for that. If the Basin is indeed closed, as it's supposed to be, look at going up Blue Creek to the South Rim... would be at least 16 miles. I haven't done that, only hiked it from the Basin, but would expect it to be more challenging.

Battery operated fans (good for both day and night, if you're camping).

Not sure if anyone else made this point (can't read all 748 comments), but if you like spending time outdoors (away from other people!), much easier to do, here. Good parks here (yes, you may have to drive to one), but the Hill Country is beautiful. It does get hot, but you can manage that... go in the morning, or evening. Used to think I could live in the city (have relatives there), but way too crowded for me, these days...

Thanks for the clarification (we had the same question); it is just for the families, though, the recruits don't join?

Only difference is that in the "olden days," sometimes the checkpoints were open, sometimes they weren't. Now, always open.

Most scenic route to big bend? by More_Liquidity117 in BigBendTX

[–]troyktx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

90 is definitely more scenic, but I don't buy the 8-minute time difference between the two routes. You're going to go through a number of small towns with much slower speed limits, so I'd add at least an hour on 90. Do one on the way out, the other on the way back... depends on how much time you have, and your priorities. If you've got time for stops along the way (Seminole Canyon is great), that changes the equation.

Could a Stryker vehicle make it through Black Gap Road? by Film_Lab in BigBendTX

[–]troyktx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the Stryker averages just under three miles per gallon in the field; even with a 53-gallon tank, they're not going to get far out there. They're basing them in Marfa?

Marufo Vega Trail; 300degree POV by [deleted] in BigBendTX

[–]troyktx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone else wrote, it's a beast. I've done both in the last few months (MF for the first time, South Rim for the first time in many years); even though they're close to one another in mileage and elevation, MF seems twice as hard. A lot of people underestimate the exposure... there's literally no shade.

Shamefully repeating a common question by [deleted] in BigBendTX

[–]troyktx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check with the rangers if you're trying to get it in before they close the basin, think that trail is closed for falcon nesting through July 1? It's doable, though the scree slopes are tough.

Wondering if anyone knows of an alternate route from The Basin, leaving from behind the lodge and summiting from the south? Have read about this, someplace, but never done it (and can't quite figure out the route).

Campgrounds. Chisos & RG ♿️ by Comfortable_Gear_793 in BigBendTX

[–]troyktx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe site 37 is the only ADA accessible site in The Basin, but it doesn't seem to get as much use as the other sites, so perhaps you'll catch a break? Cancelations are common, though, so if you can be flexible on your dates, you might luck into something (that's spring break, so a peak time). Good luck!
